I am beyond jealous! Those are two shows (and the two parts as a matter of fact) that I am DYING to be able to perform in at some point! They must have been so much fun!
I have yet to see a show on Broadway but I've been able to see several national tours and some shows in Toronto, so here's my top 5:
1) Phantom (with Colm Wilkinson in Toronto - saw him there twice)
2) Tommy (also the Toronto production - Tyley Ross left me with chills)
3) Lion King (national tour)
4) Phantom (again in Toronto - but Paul Stanley of KISS played Phantom, what a neat edge to the role)
4) Les Miserables (national tour)
I saw Colm Wilkenson in Les Mis.
His rendition of the song "Bring Him Home" brought tears to my eyes.
He has an amazing voice.
Agreed. Have heard him in Les Mis only on the albums (he's what made me a fan of that show); I think would give a kidney to see him live as Valjean!
I loved what he brought to Phantom - a very different voice from Michael Crawford, who at the time was THE Phantom. It just brought something more authoritative to the role IMO.
Best Theater Experiences
1. Angels In America (Millennium Approaches and Perestroika)
2. The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe
3. Evita (with Patti Lupone)
4. West Side Walt with Katherine Hepburn
5. Noises Off
Worst Theater Experiences.
1. The Best Little *****house Goes Public.
2. Fosse
3. Orpheus Descending with Vanessa Redgrave
4. Sunday In The Park With George
5. Fences with James Earl Jones
Love this thread! I try and go to Broadway every year to see a show.
Top 5:
1. Spamalot (funniest thing I've ever seen on Broadway)
2. Wicked
3. The Producers
4. Rent
5. The year of Magical Thinking ( with Vanessa Redgrave)
Worst:
1. The Pirate Queen - loved the people (Stephanie Block and Linda Balgord!), but the musical storyline/writing was terrible.
2. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels ( the traveling Broadway version)
I loved The Year of Magical Thinking... I love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, too, though. (Original Broadway Cast). DRS cemented my love for all things John Lithgow.
Oh - how I wished I could have seen John Lithgow and DRS!
I saw the traveling version when it came to Charlotte, and I was really disappointed. In fact, I stopped going to the local ones, and just saved my money to go back to Broadway!![]()
Have a listen to Lithgow's "Love Sneaks In" on iTunes. It's worth it.
And it makes me even more excited for "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" which starts at the Belasco on 10/2 written by David Yazbek, starring Patti LuPone, Sherie Renee Scott, deAdre Aziza, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and our friend Danny Burstein![]()
And.... Signs for Intelligent Life - did you actually get to see it with Lilly Tomlin? I've only been able to read the book, and see pictures of her performing it.

I was lucky to see it four times. It seemed that everyone I knew wanted to go.
An amazing evening with one woman wearing black pants and a print shirt on a stage carpeted in grey and they only set was a metal chair.
Mesmerizing.
I totally don't regret it. Gypsy is my favorite show, and has been since I saw Tyne Daly as Madame Rose when I was nine. We sat in the front row of the orchestra, and my then six year old brother poked the conductor in the back repeatedly through the overture until my parents noticed what he was doing.![]()
I'm sure this may have been covered already, but is your screen name in reference to Miss Saigon, by chance?
