I just had a great workout at the Y and had to share....
I can walk 30 minutes on the treadmill at 3.6 with no problem- I much prefer walking outside but this gets the pace in my head. I'm trying to build up to a 4.0 speed- so here's what I did...

Walked at 3.6 for 5 minutes- then upped it to 3.8 for one then 4.0 for one then back to 3.8 for one then back to 3.6... my heart rate went up but the trainer said as long as the up part is less than 3 minutes it's actually great for your heart. So I repeated this at minute 15 and 25- and boy- is 4.0 every booking it- if I had some of those WISH song themes in my head I would have been rocking!!

But remember I am 219 pounds- and 5'7- my gait may be longer than some of you but I've got the equivalent of two extra children on me (weight wise!)-

But at the 4.0 pace- which is a 15 minute mile- I realized my steps were about 120 steps per minute- meaning left/right = 2 steps actually probably closer to 125-130 but that gives me an idea when I'm walking on the street as to what my pace is.

So let's get that pace up so we can meet that 16 minute mile pace for 13 miles- at this point I think I could keep a 16 minute mile up for 3 miles and have to break into a jog to keep it at that for the others- boy we need some WISH music to keep us motivated- anyone willing to download some MP3's that will last the full 13 miles? :)

Keep it up walker/runners/joggers! Only 19 more months to go! :)

I have been doing the High interval training too...On the treadmill, I have been doing 4.0 to start...upto 4.5 for two minutes and then 2 minutes at a jog at 6.0. I also bring up the incline to 3 and down again. The slowest I go is 4.0. I can hold that pace through three cycles for 20 minutes or so for a total of 1.56 miles in 20 minutes.

I am short...only 5 feet tll, so at 4.5 I am booking it. I am covered in sweat after the 20 minutes, and then I do free weights followed by the nautilus. I am hoping that and my walks daily will get me in shape.

Right now, I can do the 16 minute Mile without any problems, but walking each night is really helping me get that number down! I think as each day passes, I am building that number lower! :)

I am really looking forward to this! It is nice to have a long term goal right now and WISHCon is it for me! :)

Can I tether myself to you when we walk the marathon?? WOW- you must be booking it- my sister is 5'3 and complains because I have a long stride- hopefully once I get these 70 pounds off I can make my thighs move a little faster- I would be THRILLED to be able to do the full 30 minutes at a 4.0 pace- well I made it 3 minutes tonight so here's to catching up to ya!!! I don't think I could ever break into a jog for more than 30 seconds- my knees make all kinds of funny popping sounds - but I hope as I lose the weight this will not be as bad. Keep posting all the successes on the treadmill- it gives me a good idea of goals to set for myself!!

Just thinking of pushing the speed up to 6.0 really gives me the willies! :) But I am gonna try to push the incline- I had been doing 5% inclines at 3.6- but the trainer said I should go more for speed then add the inclines back in- I don't think there's any way I could do a 5% incline at 4.0 for more than 30 seconds! :) Thanks for the great info!!! AND KEEP IT UP!!!!!! You're the TREADMILL Woo-hooer!!!

You are all doing so well! Keep it up...and thanks for posting how you all are doing...motivates me to get moving more! Congrats again!

Excellent job everyone! Looks like so many of us are motivated and ready to go. It will be alot of fun and so inspirational to others I hope as well. I have my first exercise visit with my trainer. She is going to help me devise a plan to get to my goals. Yesterday was the eval visit. All I can say is WOW, I have some work cut out for me!;) But I will get there, onward an downward!!!!:smooth:

This has given me good pointers. Although I love doing my stuff out of doors, I guess reality is that I should be on the TM the days I can't go out. I will be looking to increase my time. I am a short timer right now. I don't know how I will make it as we need to increase the length of time, but starting off with small steps. At least I am starting off!

Sounds like you guys are doing awesome!

For those who are trying to walk faster--work on walking faster b4 pushing the limit with the incline--that is what my trainer suggested and I reached my goals faster than I had anticipated.

HTH!

Any tips for a beginner. I can probably do 1 16minute mile with out problem but 13 1/2?

I would love to do the 2005 WISHCON and would love suggestions on how to get started!

If you're just starting out (listen to me I've been walking for 6 weeks and you'd think I'm an old pro! :)), I would focus on distance and increasing the amount of time you walk. For instance I started out 30 minute walks 4x a week, I did this for 2 weeks then upped it to 50 minute walks 5x a week, and did this for 4 weeks and now I'm doing 50 minute walks T-W-H and a total of 8 miles on the weekends- 5 one day and 3 the next- I take a break on Mondays and Fridays. Now that I'm doing about 15-17 miles a week I'm working on my speed- so on Tuesdays and Thursday nights I go to the gym in addition to my am walks and do the treadmile for 30 minutes (they limit us to that at the YMCA)- really focusing on working towards a 4.0 speed mile. I also do about 30 minutes of weight training on those days- mostly upper body but a few leg/thigh machines. Hope this helps a bit and others will post what's worked for them. But since it's 19 months away (marathon) I think building up your consistency with walking is harder than speed- most marathon trainers say to work on the speed and longer walks (7-10 milers) in the last three months of training. But most say weekly you should aim to walk between 10-15 miles on the minimum.

Hope this helps!!

Man. You guys are fast! I can do the treadmill for thirty plus minutes but I usually get off at around 20 and move onto the bike.

But my normal pace is a 3.0 with a 6.0 incline. Sometimes I bring the incline down to a 3 and push to speed to a 4.0. And other times I push up the incline to 6 while going a speed of 4. But it gets uncomfortable after a few minutes.

Don't feel bad about thinking everyone is so fast. Not everyone is, the point is to start and keep at it I guess. The rest should come if we keep on keeping on. It gets easier with time. (I hope)

I'm so very impressed with all of you nad the training you've already started. I've chosen to really concentrate on my weight loss becase I have so much to lose (over 125!) and once I get a good amount of that off, between 60-75, then I'm gonna concentrate on training hard. For now, since I've never been a consistant walker, I've ordered the WATP tapes and will start those as soon as they come. Any other suggestions?
