For the next 20 years, the #1 issue for the USA will / should be....?

Which issue needs to be addressed the most?

  • healthcare - how it can be available for all

  • medical issues... Aids, cancer, diabetes, obesity...

  • terrorism

  • illegal immigration

  • enviromental issues

  • energy prices / consumption

  • poverty

  • education

  • something else entirely?

What do you think the most important issue will be in the USA over the next 20 years or so?

EDIT: should have said AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE available to all.

How to get rid of the "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." errors on these boards.

With apologies to Aaron Sorkin, I do believe he said it right when he singled out privacy as the biggest and most important issue facing us.

Defining and preserving our right to privacy is the most important issue I can think of, and it's incredibly far reaching.

Wish I had thought to add that one!

I chose environmental issues because without that, nothing else really matters much.

I agree.

With all due respect, healthcare IS available to all.

OK, but I think you know what I meant.... "affordable" healthcare.... my mom spends $400 a month on drugs and is retired. And I know that TONS of people spend THOUSANDS of dollars.

Care for the elderly (including health care issues). I think almost everybody, every family has situations of trying to find and/or provide care to an older relative than cannot fully take care of themself.

The combination of medical advances and families that no longer live in the same community has left us with a social hole that I don't think we know how to work our way out of.

I think the answer is "Its Citizens".

Do they have affordable healthcare?
Do they live in safe housing?
Can they get decent educations at all levels?

Etc.

I chose illegal immigration because as long as that is the ongoing problem it is, it will be hard to keep a handle on the equally pressing problem of terrorism with such open boarders. Healthcare, the environment, education, poverty are all impacted by illegal immigration. When California alone sees the cost of illegal immigration to be $10 billion dollars per year, and there are 49 other states impacted as well, one has to accept that its a serious problem.

With all due respect, no its not. Either you are elderly and qualify, on welfare, a child or wealthy. My girlfriend qualifies for no assistance as she make to much money, but independently does not have healthcare as all providers deny her of coverage due to a preexisting condition. ( and yes we have been trying to get her coverage for over 7 yeas now) SO all of her healthcare comes out of our pocket , her prescriptions alone (for a 28 yr old) are over $700 a month. Now if the government would just allow us to marry then she could be covered under my health insurance!

So i guess she should just quit working and live off the system!! I think not.

Our population is too large and issues to vast to have ONE issue that is focused on for the next 20 years.

If I had to pick one,it would be security of our country. If security is breached--too many resources are wasted on that and then pulled away from everything else. Have everything secure as it should be, then you would have time, energy, and resources to fix other things.

We have too many issues that are reaching a breaking point right now for me to pick one and say that's going to be the focus issue.

But since you asked for one, I'm going to pick illegal immigration because it ties into several problems we have (national security, education, health care costs, diseases/illnesses, environment, consumption, taxes, etc...)

I agree, We can't focus on JUST ONE, and I agree that you picked the "right" one! ;)

Universal healthcare, followed closely by energy consumption/environmental issues. I think those two are inseparable.

It's too hard for me to separate energy consumption with environmental issues. :confused3
