How does shaving, depilatory creams, etc affect your tattoo? I have two really cool designs I want on my calves, but would hate to have them ruined by doing the usual girly stuff.:)

I have tattoos on the inside of both ankles, and nothing I do during normal personal care routines has affected them in any way. The ink is deposited far under the skin, whereas any process you'd do in your own home does not go down that far. You'll be fine. Post pictures when they're done!

I have one on my thigh, but it is still an area where I shave. I shave daily, and it has not affected (effected?) my tattoo at all. It still looks like it did when I first got it, over a year ago. I dont usually do anything except shave, but im sure a cream like nair wouldnt bother it at all.

Good luck with your tattoos!! They are quite addicting if you dont already have some.

Mine looks fine.
I can't wait to get it removed.

Mine on my ankle has not been affected by shaving - I don't use the creams so I don't know. I keep it well hydrated with lotion, even 10 years later, and it looks great. Good luck, have fun - like fraggle said, they are addicting.

I have one on the inside of my ankle too and nothing seems to affect it. I've had it for about 4 years.

The only special care I need to do for the tattoo I have on my outer left ankle is, being extra vigilant applying sunscreen when going out into the sun. I want to be sure it won't fade. I've had for 10 years and it still looks great.

I didn't shave just after I had it inked though, until it had fully healed. Until then, I just shaved around it as best I could.

I have used Nair, but it didn't affect anything, including the hair I was trying to remove.

I have one on my outer calf, I shave normally. The hair seems to grow less where the tattoo is

I was going to post that I wish I could shave mine off!

I have two small flowers on the inside of my left ankle. I cover them up so much with band-aids that I have tan lines around them. :rotfl:

You are SO lucky! I have a HUGE tattoo of The Fox and the Hound on my ankle. I LOVE the movie. I LOVE my tattoos...I HATE having them on my body forever. I can't even commit to a bag or a hair color permanently!

I put on a dress today to see if it would work for V&As at WDW this April. Not sexy with Tod and Copper (and Rafiki on my back :sad2: ) looking out.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but obviously we were all fans at one time of tattoos. I got mine on my honeymoon, so it has special significance. My husband's is awesome and I'd like for him to get another one. On him, it looks good. On me... not so much.

What I'd like to know, is why can't they tattoo back over them with flesh-colored ink? I was going to get mine removed, until I read that they give you a bunch of Novocain shots surrounding it, and that it still feels like an electrical shock. The shots I can handle (I've had two children and shots in MUCH worse places), but I HATE the feeling of being shocked. :scared:

ETA: Can women wear nice slacks at V&A's? If so, check out Black House White Market's slacks. I got some black ones that are in this really luxurious silk-type fabric and wore them with a dressy top when we were in Playa del Carmen. The hotel that we stayed at was pretty dressy and they worked out wonderfully!

I don't care about shots. I just KNOW that laser removal hurts and costs a ton. I am going to do it when we get back to the States. Times 3 (the Chesire cat would be the first one I got).

I am not wearing pants to V&As. I need to feel girly!

Oh, and the reason that they can't 'cover' it with flesh color is that tat ink is IN there. You can't just go over it. White ink can't be removed. It has to have color to be 'shocked' out of you.

I just want to say (again as Ive said a bazillion times on the DIS) that I LOVE the things in my Tattoos. You don't see Tod and Copper every day. But when I got them, tattoos weren't the 'trendy' thing to do. I was unusual for about a year. Ugh.

I'd hate to be the monkey on your back....;)

I've had you done twice entirely.:headache:

Thank you for the replies, I have 6 tattoos, 5 on my arms and one on my chest. So not places you normally shave. Glad to hear they won't be affected. Now to just save a few more pennies to get them!

Sorry to those who have regrets. There is leg makeup that covers scars and varicose veins. I have heard it works wonders on tattoos.

You let me know how that goes for you!

Gotcha. I don't blame you!

Well, I see flowers everyday, and would love not to see them on my leg.

I wish I would have gotten a Maltese Cross or something else, now. Oh well...

I've tried it. I used to use when I had to wear hose (back when I sold new houses) and it worked okay, but it's really dry and cakey and a pain in the rear to get the color right.

Now, I wear a band-aid and after the true me comes out (around my clients) I tell them I have it and I flat out ask them if it bothers them. Nine times out of ten they show me tattoos that they have. Then, finally, my tattoo gets to see the light of day. ;)

I am seriously considering getting a black belt tattoo when I achieve the rank of black belt. I hear that may be around June of this year. My only concern is where (probably hip area) and actual design.

Any thoughts?

I would just do it an area that can be easily covered it you choose to do so.

My oldest daughter has some Chinese symbol tattooed on her lower back. I thought that was fine until I heard them referred to as "tramp stamps" not too long ago. You really only see it when she's in a bathing suit though.

I hate that term for the lower back tattoos! That's what everyone calls them around here too. I've also heard the called Panama city license plate.

Now that's a new one to me! I guess maybe because of all the spring breakers down there?
