My 3rd grader has an IEP. He is having difficulty with the in-class writing assignments & tests. He is fortunate to have a wonderful teacher this year. She is willing/happy to do whatever needs to be done to help my son succeed. We are tossing around the idea of having him use a laptop for writing assignments. The computer works well for him at home. My main concern is the logistics of it all. My son is not the most organized child - it goes with the dyslexia territory. Anyone have any experience with a child that age using a laptop for classwork while the rest of the class uses paper & pencil?

Neither of mine has dyslexia, but DS had other issues that made writing extremely difficult. Laptops were lumped in with all other electronic devices & banned from school. We had extreme difficulty getting them to even accept homework assignments that were not hand-written - at least before about 9th grade.

If, however, your school is willing to allow it, I would think that the teacher would assist with the organizational issues. Also, using a computer seems to help with organization for many people.

I hope you are able to find a good solution for everyone!

There are students in my board that use a lap top for the same type reasons. The lap tops are the property of the school, but as the student moves from grade to grade the lap top goes with him/her to that classroom. There is special funding available to purchase these for students who are identified and are on an IEP. Maybe your board has a similar program or funding. That way you do not have to worry about the lap top going back and forth between home and school. Good luck!
