My Boys

My boys, tonight, you’re far away
And lonely, too, no doubt;
But we won’t grieve, nor weep at all,
Because we’ve ruled that out.
My thoughts, tonight, are of all of you
And though I miss you so,
I’m proud to say my little boys,
That you were the first to go.
I’ll do my best big boys of mine
In any way I can,
To do my part and keep a home,
For my big sailors and soldier man.
And when this strife has ended,
And you are safely here,
Only then will I rejoice
And maybe shed a tear.
So keep your chin up, boys of mine,
And take it like a man
As did our forebears years ago
To start this wondrous land.
I know that I’ll be proud of you,
That you’ll be staunch and true
That you’ll return all safe and sound
And be my little boys anew.

….Mrs. Julia Avant

Okay, I don't have a child in the military service but this still made me teary.
