I'm the poster child for "YARC", the "You ain't right club". But if the truth be known there are a whole bunch of us on the WISH Team that have a screw or two loose. We do things that would get a "Your Crazy" reaction from most people. We take on some of the baddest endurance events on the planet.

We are currently 9 weeks from our biggest show of the year, the half, full and goofy challange. Last week we got our "EEEK, it's only 10 weeks till the marathon", out of the way. Now most of us are ready to mentally plant our feet, draw our sword and kick butt on any demons our body and mind throws at us.

You first timers are probably thinking about this time, "What have I got myself into"? Your wondering if it's really worth the effort. That is a question that each of us have to answer for ourselves. There is a saying, I think it started in the military, since that's where I first heard it, "You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk"?. When you cross that finish line in January, you can say "Heck yes I can walk the walk"!

I personally need the challange, I stopped exercising and doing the races for about 8 years, after retiring from the Air Force and for all that time, I felt that something was missing from my life. There was something missing, it was the excitement, the adventure and the pure joy of being an athlete.

On January 12th Erica and I will be toeing the starting line of our first Goofy, because we want it and we need it.

How about the rest of you half, full and Goofy finishers, what keeps you coming back? Is it worth the effort?

The other saying comes to mind for me "If they build it, they will come". I was happy in 06 to have signed up for the 5K & Marathon at WDW. After a couple of months, they announced this "Goofy" thing. I had to do it. Even with no races or training because of Achilles issues and surgeries, I had to have 3 medals. 06 done:) Than thought in 07 I now have a streak(all of one) and I have to continue it. 07 done. 08 gets signed up while still at WDW for the Goofy:eek: . Now 3 months before, find I have cartlidge tear in knee(bother me for last year including 07 Goofy) and will have to have surgery. I am forgoing the surgery until return from Goofy 08. Hey, I have a streak and I can deal with a little(sometimes a lot) of daily pain to finish my 3rd Goofy. This knee issue has weakened my training thus causing a shin injury(more of a worry for finishing Goofy). I am in PT for shin and knee. I will be at the starting line in Jan no matter what and will be wearing proudly 3 new medals!

No pain, no gain!

I can see there is no dought in your mind if it's important and worth the effort.

You bring to mind another old tried and true saying, "I'd rather be a has been than a never was".

You are one of my heroes Robert, even if you are a nut.

What keeps me coming back? Hmmm, the training I'm thinking as I sit here looking about the room that needs cleaning. If I were not training I would have to be cleaning. Yech!

Really, though back in my "younger days" (I was 54 doing my firstever 1/2 marathon) I had one of the Marathon finishers give me "the talk." I went to the awards ceremony after my 1st half marathon and chatted with a lovely "older" couple. The woman participated in the marathon and I was bowing to her fete. She looks at me and tells me "You can do it." as she went up to accept her 2nd place trophy for her age group (she was in the over 70 group). I look at her stats and she continues to kick my butt time-wise the last couple of years. At 57 I will be going for another Goofy because I can. One comment from the woman I stood next to got me wondering if I could really do it. You know, I CAN do it! You can too!

Lily the years have been kind to you, I would have pegged you for much younger.

Yes, we do neglect stuff because we are athletes and we need our time to train. My house looks abandoned in the summer because the neighbors have nice flower beds and landscaping and I bearly take time to cut the grass. But that's all they do is go to work come home and watch TV and on the weekends do the yard. While I'm out doing 5Ks and 10Ks, or just doing my LSD day.
