We're heading to Ft. Monmouth near Tinton Falls for a few days in November. DH has business there and the family is tagging along.

I'm wondering what are the best ways to get into NYC and Philly. Also, I'd love any restaurant recommendations. Nothing touristy -- we like to eat where the locals hang out.

TIA!

Kristen

I'm not a NJ resident and I can't answer your question, so I'll just bump this back to page one for you.

Hi there, your best bet for NYC is the train. The closest train station to Ft Monmouth is Little Silver, very close. As far as Phil, we always drive. A very easy ride. Tell me what kind of food you like and I can tell you some restaurants. There are so many good places to eat around here. Also every chain restaurant imaginable. Let me know.

I agree the best way to Philly from here is to drive. If you get on the GSP go down to exit 98 and take 195 It will take you to Philly. How many of you are going into the city. I live 10 miles north of there and go in with my dds and always drive. It winds up cheaper than the train and you can park whereever you need to go. As long as you are not going at rush hour this is a good option. The train will work too of course. We have every chain restaurant imaginable here. There are local seafood places but nothing else around here is a big local attraction.

Thank you for the responses!

It will be Dh, myself and two kids. We love NYC and are very excited to venture into Philly for the first time. I'm especially looking forward to a REAL Philly cheesesteak. ;)

Appreciate your time in answering!

We always drive into Philly and take the ferry from Weehauken into NYC. I can't stand driving into NYC - too much traffic, too many idiots, nowhere to park, etc. The nice thing about the ferry is with the price of the ferry ticket you get access to a whole bus system in NYC.

The Molly Pitcher Inn in Redbank has good food. Actually there are a number of great little restaurants in Redbank.

I agree the best way to Philly is to drive. For NYC you can also take the ferry from Belford (Middletown) which is a lot closer than driving to Hoboken or Weehawken. The train is also a great option. Here are some websites.

As for restaurants, Red Bank (about 10 mins away) has several good restaurants depending on your taste.
Murphy's (American http://www.murphysgrill.com/)
Juanitos (Mexican)
Basil T's (Italian http://www.basilt.com/)
There are also your chains (near the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown)
Chili's
TGIFriday's
Applebees
Hope this helps...

In Tinton Falls, you can take 35 (or 36--it's been a while since I was there) east toward the ocean. The highway turns into the city streets of Long Branch. On the beach there is a restaurant called Charley's Ocean Grill, that is awesome for seafood.
