Is there no longer a guy who sits behind the goal and uses the signal button when there's a goal? We went to the Sharks/Flyers game last night & I was shocked to see no goal judge. I know that there are cameras and sensors at the net, but no person right there. When did this happen? I know about the video judge goal - but he's upstairs, watching different camera angles. (we actually know the main video goal judge at San Jose). & I know about reviews during the game at the HQ in Toronto.

BUT

When did they get rid of the guy behind the goal?

It's been at least a few years ago now. As far as I know, the reasoning was that not only was his position rendered pretty much obsolete by virtue of all of the cameras both on site and in Toronto, but removing the goal judge's booth would also free up the space for a couple of high-$$ seats.

I still see them in the minors, virtually worthless, they usually are talking to the ice techs, board guys and the ice chicks and have on more than one occasion missed a goal because they were not paying attention. I think we actually seen a goal judge last year in Columbus, against the Wild...I'll have to check my pictures from the game. Maybe is different at other arenas, haven't been to a game this year.

They still have goal judges at the games at the Air Canada Centre where the Toronto Maple Leafs play. Sometimes he can have a good snooze, depending on which team is in front of him.
