For my sanity...I hope everyone online reads this

I could care less if people post are mispelled of if mine are. If you don't like how I spell please post my on igore.:goodvibes

Misspellings are one thing, but when you omit whole words (frequently) and type words that make no sense in the sentence, it's hard to understand what you're trying to say.

:thumbsup2

I agree don't sweat the small stuff people! so you without mistakes please point out all the mistakes others make...please don't look in your own back yard before judging others ;)

anyway does it really matter that some people misspell words on a mess. board???

if you don't like it then don't read or post in that thread, simple as that...;)

Because, eventually if people keep using the wrong words and phrasing:

1.) It looks bad

2.) In other situations, it can completely change the message, and if it's not picked up on (say, for someone just learning english and trying to use it properly) the wrong thing could get across.

3.) Why look less intelligent?

I would 'of' never guessed there would be so many people passionate about spelling.

I have a friend that has a Doctorate. She teaches education courses for an online university and she regularly misspells each of the words that have been mentioned. I normally don't worry about other people's misspellings, but hers get to me considering her education level and area of employment. :scared1:

THAT drives me nuts.......... Of and Have are NOT interchangeable....

A few more...people saying "worse" when they should be saying "worst"...like "the absolute worse thing you can do"

Also, people somehow getting the idea of the end of a word that should have the letters "le" they put "al" instead.

This was quite bad when I saw an electronic sign for the local Ruth Eckerd Hall with the phrase "LEXUS : The official vehical of Ruth Eckerd Hall"....it was like that for a few weeks before it was changed. :sad2:

Where do they come up with an "al" at the end??? I've seen that frequently.

All I have to say is I am not here to impress anyone but for my own enjoyment and I don't expect anyone else to be perfect like others do :snooty:

I think that it's insulting to one's readers not to make an effort at clear and correct communication. Too many folks have the attitude of "Why should I bother to be careful? It's just a message board. I come here to have fun, not to be perfect."

But what they are saying is, "I only care about my own enjoyment. I'm not willing to take a few extra seconds to make sure that I am understood properly. You people are not worth my time or effort.".

If I am asking you to read my thoughts and engage in a dialogue with me, then I owe it to you to show you the respect of communicating properly. I think you all are worth it. :goodvibes

I disagree with this statement. The written language does not come quickly or easily to many people. It may take you a "few extra seconds," but it may take several minutes for someone else.

I think these boards should be all about having fun, and I don't want anyone whose writing skills aren't that great to stop participating because of that.

Understood. But when the written language does come easily, as in, for example, when someone writes professionally, and that person chooses not to take the few seconds necessary to make sure their forum posts can be understood clearly even by those for whom it does not come easily or quickly, that just displays the lack of consideration posted by VillageMama.

And what's so wrong with even taking a few extra minutes to make sure a post is comprehensible?

Why can't people just be themselves???

edit to add: what you consider consideration is different to another...that is what makes us all different ..again I just want to be myself and not worry about weather anything or everything I type is going to offend someone b/c I can't make everyone happy just not going to happen...

Exactly. Here we have the "hidden disability" excuse. We should muddle through a post, trying to decipher its meaning because its writer might struggle with the English language.

So struggle! Everyone has some area in which they are less proficient than others. We don't get to throw up our hands and say, "But it's harder for me than it is for you!". Okay, it's harder. So work harder.

You ought to see me attempt mathematics. :headache:

But if I chose to visit a forum in which we communicated with equations and numbers and such, I'd pull out a calculator and get to work. I wouldn't just toss out some numbers and think, "Figure out what I mean.".

It's not a matter of offending anyone (heck, offensive posts are removed and the authors given points ;)). It's simply a matter of making oneself clearly understood. I get wanting to be oneself - but simply because I know what I mean or you know what you mean doesn't indicate that our readers will know what we mean if we use the wrong word or the wrong version/form of the word.

Good point. 'Casual' posting, written using any style, spelling, form that the writer chooses, is actually inconsiderate to readers with, well, reading challenges such as dyslexia.

Just have to add my pet peeve, even though it isn't a misspelling. Rather it's a non-word that seems to be used frequently lately and the majority of users seem to think it really is a word.

This non word is "conversate". You may engage in a conversation with another or you may converse with someone, but you did NOT conversate with them!

Well, I feel a bit better now. Thanks! :rotfl:

I honestly don't think that poorly written posts are a sign that a poster is being inconsiderate.

Difficulties with the written word are a hidden disability, Village Mom, because you could interact with someone in various ways for years, but until you saw something they wrote, you'd have no way of knowing that they may have a learning disability.

Frankly, the "hidden disability" issue generally pertains to someone needing an accommodation (for example, a handicapped placard for their vehicle or a wheelchair) when to the naked eye, that person appears to be able-bodied.
