My mother smokes:o but only outside. I am wondering if I need to get her a ressie in a smoking room, or non-smoking. I want to request that her room be near ours (which will be non-smoking). Do they group smoking rooms near smoking rooms, etc? I'm not sure what to ask for!

where are you staying?

HH has all the studios (I think) in one building.

OKW has smoking building next to non-smoking building - 18 is non-smoking, 19 is smoking.

I am not sure about VWL, BCV or BWV.

I would not put a smoker in a non-smoking room.

Oh boy, I can see where this thread will be going. It's been mentioned in previous posts that the CM's says it's alright to smoke on the balcony of a non-smoking room and will even supply an ash tray to use.

I might suggest that if your mom is smoking on the balcony of a non smoking room that she be aware of people in the units around her who might be on their balconies or have their balcony doors open. The smoke can drift and be offensive to those around her , even outside. Another suggestion might be to smoke on the porch area on the other side of the building(OKW) near the front doors. Much less chance of smoke offending those around her.

Based on your screen name, I'll assume (:D) you will be staying at BWV. All of the smoking rooms are on the second (lobby-level) floor. I'm not sure if there are any non-smoking rooms on this floor.

There have been many "debates" on this subject. SOme of them got rather nasty, IMHO. As far as I know, there was never any official Disney policy posted on this subject - at least none that appeared to be from a credible source. If I in your situation, I would call the resort and ask to speak to either the manager or the room assigner. Good luck!

Enjoy your trip!

I certainly don't want to start a debate of any kind.... I've just never had this situation before and want to do the right thing! I guess I'll get her a smoking room this way there is sure to be no problem with her smoking on her balcony!
Thanks!

As I made my first ressie as a DVC member at BCV (yay!!), I specifically asked the CM this exact question. I'm in the process of quitting smoking and wanted to know if I don't make it, can I smoke on the balcony of a non smoking room? The CM said she had been asked this very question quite a lot recently. She put me on hold while she went to get an answer from a supervisor. It must have been a lengthy discussion as I was on hold almost 5 minutes.

The answer was exactly what I wanted to hear. NO, it is not allowed. Which is fine by me, otherwise I know I'll be out there sneaking a puff or two. If I absolutely positively have to have a smoke, I will have to go outside to a smoking area.

I'm so glad that the official answer you received was "NO". I got chills up my spine when I read the topic heading. Smoking rooms are available for those who want to light up. I think the OP is wise in her decision to book a smoking room for her mom.

If she had been asked that very question quite a lot recently, why hadn't she found out the answer for a previous caller?

She probably just went outside for a 5 minute cigarette break ...

LOL wdeversole!

She said she was asking different CMs and getting different answers, that's why she wanted a definite yes or no answer from a supervisor.

Unfortunately, many people are going to do whatever they want. It would be a good idea to have a written policy regarding the matter of smoking on the balcony of a non smoking room in the member guide.(if they do, I haven't seen it). Otherwise it's whatever the CM at the time tells you.

I am almost afraid to post here!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have a smoker in our family and are DVC Member for quite a while and have taken at least 15 DVC WDW vacations. We have ALWAYS been told by DVC (OKW/BWV) that smoking IS PERMITTED on the BALCONY of a non-smoking room. We were at OKW in April and were told that this was the policy. We have NEVER encountered anyone objecting to this.

We were in bldg 20(non-smoking) July 3-6 at OKW. When my wife and I were on our balcony (2nd floor), somebody below lit up and it was very annoying and smoke was coming up to us. My feeling is that there should be no smoking on balconys of non-smoking buildings. If people need to light up all they have to do is go for a short walk to do it. DVC members request non-smoking buildings for a reason, and that is usually our "number 1" request.
So I am very glad "Candlelady" got a "NO" smoking allowed from the CM.:bounce:

well if the smoking floor is on the second, then if they smoked on a second floor balcony and would drift up to the rest of the floors. So I don;t see why people couldn't smoke on the 5th floor balconies. JMHO

I am a non-smoker and would prefer that the entire world (as in the planet earth) be non-smoking.:) :)

That said, it appears to me that the only time smoking on a non-smoking room's balcony would make a difference to non-smokers would be at resorts where entire buildings are designated as non-smoking. At BWV, for instance, all of the smoking rooms are on the second floor. I know of no way to keep the smoke only on the second floor (short of requiring the smoker to wear a bag over his/her head or installation of a giant balcony fan to blow the smoke back into the room - just joking about both, of course:D). I'm quite sure that is also the situation at VWL & BCV.

JMHO. YMMV.

The best advice heard here was be aware of folks around you. Is someone out on the balconey or thier door open. My DW has allergies and her's is not bad towards smoke but she is allergic. If someone asked or just look around most problems can be worked out.

My opinion is they should not, but if someone asked I would be willing to work something out with them. This can be a hot button topic here.

Have a great vacation.

I agree with Cris, I think all the DVC resorts should make the smoking rooms the top floor since smoke rises. Since there are so many more people that definitely do not want a smoking room, the rooms with the best views at BCV, WLV & BWV will be much easier to book, especially the boardwalk views and the Epcot views at BCV!!! Sounds like a plan to me! LOL!!

This is so weird that this got posted because just last night my DH asked me what the rules are regarding this. He is a smoker, and is sick of having to plan his trips, plane rides etc around his habit, so he is trying to quit. He is hoping this won't be an issue by the time we go. At home he goes outside since I don't smoke, and he is very concerend about the other visitors when we go to Disney. He always goes to the smoking sections in the parks to puff where he is supposed to. We have always gotten Non smoking rooms, but since we had a garden view on the ground floor when we were at the Poly, and all other trips have either been at moderates or All Stars, this has never been an issue since we never had a balcony. Next trip we are going to BCV and then on to one night at AKL (where it is clearly stated that smoking is not permitted on the Savannah rooms balconies because of the animals, even though some say they still do it ). We have requested non-smoking rooms again, and even though he is hoping to have quit by December, he asked me about this. He has decided that it would be a nicer trip for us and for others if he just went outside and sat on a bench or took a walk when he needed to smoke. This way we can avoid any reprimands from CM's nasty looks from guests or confrontations that might other wise spoil our trip and the trip of someone else.

Hopefully this won't be an issue. I made him a deal. If I lost 50 pounds then he was supposed to quit. Guess what? Yep, I lost my 50 pounds and he is still puffing away!!

I find this amazing---talking about drifting smoke!!!!!!!!!!With so many other serious problems in this world of ours we find time to discuss such trivia!!!!!!!!!!! We have terorists, alchoholics, drug addicts, child molestors, clergy abusers and the list can go on and on.............We in this country have sooooooo much to be thankful for and all we ask from our fellow man is consideration-----and being an ex-smoker myself, I find that most smokers are considerate smokers and should I encounter someone who is not a considerate smoker I would certainly try to work an amiable solution with them. I realize some people are really offended by smoke, but come on-------do you also diiscuss at such length bus/truck diesel fumes---just riding on a highway can make me nauseous................So let's not be so hard on smokers----after all they all probably started smoking when no one realized how harmful it was. Have some compassion for them as I am sure that they want to quit, but somehow the addiction is to hard to overcome.

I apologize if I have offended anyone here, I just had to offer my opinion on this.

Carrieberry,
No reprimand meant but why don't you just request a smoking room?? This way DH can just go out and sit on the balcony and have a cigarette and not have to go and find a smoking area at the resort.

Becaus eI don;t like the way they smell. I know it sounds silly, but I find the smoking rooms I ususally have stayed in before completely stink of smoke, so many different brands, even cigars. Blech. I just want him to quit! Do the Disney rooms smell any better?
