For Grandma's: What's your "name"?

WHen I was pregnant with my first (now 14). My Mom said the first words he says will be my name. We all laughed and said yeah, right Mom!! Dad said He WOULD be Grandpa and nothing else.

So along comes DS, THe first real word / sound he made was ba and she squealed, see he did it, he said my name first!!!!!!!! HE called her Baba til he was 3 then it chnaged to Gaga and finally morphed in to the granny!

Until he was about 5 when he would get tired or hurt he would still call her baba!!

My dad somehow became Papa. Of course he responds to all his grandkids every whims!!!!

My grandmother always said "I ain't nobody's gramdma), so I called her Mama, so when the next grandchild came along, he called my grandfather Daddy Jack and my grandmother Mama Jack, so then that is what everyone called her, until my last cousin was born, then she called her Yea Yea or a derivitive of the Greek Ya Ya, so then everyone called her that. I still always called her Mama (it used to confuse all of my friends, because I grew up in the house with only my mother and grandmother or Mommie and Mama). My mom says she doesn't care what her grandchildren call her as long as it isn't sweety(long story), nana, big momma, or granny, that is if there are ever any grandchildren. After all we (DH & I) have been through, I don't think she care what they would call her.

My cousin's daughter calls her grandmother Gee Gee and her grandfather Papa.

I have a Grandma/Granny (whichever we feel like).
I also had a Gran.

For us it was Granny and Mamma (Mam-mah). I never had grandma, so I could never buy those Grandma cards at Hallmark.

My own Mom is finally a grandmother and she wants to be called Nana and it just seems wrong for us. My brother and I both hate it and have told her that our kids will not be calling her Nana. She says she doesn't care if we're not Italian (we're mostly Anglo & French for European heritage anyway).

My niece's father is mostly German, whose family came here after WW II and made their last name sound Polish to avoid anti-German treatment at the time. So my niece has a Polish last name, but she's not Polish at all. I'm trying to get my niece to use the Polish term for Grandmother.....babci (bop-she).... It's tongue-in-cheek, but my Mom wanted something unique and it fits the bill.

My Italian grandmother was called Nanny.

My father's mother was called Grandma.

Not a grandma either, but...

My grandmothers were Nony (short for Nonna, Italian for grandmother) and El (short for Elinor, my grandmother's first name). Apparently my very southern great grandmother called her (her DD) EL-ner, and all I heard was the El, so it stuck!

DH's grandmothers are Alvie (nn for Alva, her first name) and Nana Mum (because she is his grandma on the mum's side).

My kids call my mom Gigi (short for Grandma Gayle) and DH's mom Nanny.

I think most kids will find their own name for the grands. My MIL is a rather formal person and always signed cards & such "Grandmother Lastname". That is, until oldest DS spent an afternoon with her by himself. when we came back, she was "Playmom" and she's been that for the last 21yrs

My own mother is Granny, which I don't particularly like. But I figure the grandkids will call me what ever they like, just like we did (thinking of Mamaw, Papaw, Gumpa, Great Mom and Hey You )

To their faces both our Grandmas were just "Grandma", but in reference to them we said "Grandma Warren" or "Grandma Mac (short for McIntosh)".

Now, my kids call my mom Grandma (and sometimes Grandma Mac ). Grandma Mac passed away when I was 8 mos. preg. w/ my first, so she never got a Great Grandma name. They call my MIL Beanie, and Mimi is what they call my Grandma.

My Daddy is Grandaddy and my Paw Paw is also Paw Paw to the kids. DH dad is just Grandpa.

My cousin's daughter calls her grandmother Gee Gee and her grandfather Papa.

My mom and dad are Gigi and Papa too --I thought my mom was the only one called Gigi! She picked it when I was pregnant with her first grandchild. She didn't want to be called Grandma because it made her feel too old.

Dh's parents are Grandma and Grandpa

I had so many great grandparents and all 4 grandparents that my mom came up with a system -- Great grandparents were Grandma or Grandpa with their last name and grandparents were Grandma or Grandpa with their first name.

My maternal grandma was changed to Magra when my cousin was about 2 or 3 and kept switching her words around -- she also said mazagine and hostipal for magazine and hospital.

I have six wonderful grandchildren -- the oldest is 5 and the youngest is 10 monthes.

Each set of kids (3 sets) call me something different --

Nana
Silly Grandma
Crazy Grandma

I do tend to have a fun time with them........ It's like being a kid again.

I have a Nana.

My other Nana passed away when i was 4, my grandpa (papa) shortly after.

My other grandfather was...Penn! I don't know where it came from. neither does anyone else. Apparently, when i was little i walked into their house one day and asked "where's penn?" my nana had no idea what/who i was talking about (and penn was at the store!) i asked and asked until he walked through the door...THERE'S PENN!

my penn passed away 10 years ago, but the 17 grandchildren he has (met and never met) still refer to him as Penn.

DD and DS called MIL "Grammy" and my mom "Mom-Mom"

My ds4 calls my MIL "Mamaw", my late fil "Papaw" , and my dm "Gamma".

Others include my mil's mom who "Mee Maw", and my teenaged nieces term for my dm is "G-Ma"

& my MIL is Grandma with everyone except DD7, she calls her Madame , she came up with that on her own

when my granddaughter was a wee one ..she could not say gramma so it was damma......but she got straightened out finally and I became gramma......I like it , as my mil was the grammie and my mom was the nana....I enjoyed it and the newest ones can say that one....
My hubby is Papa cause the little ones could not do grandpa.....so papa it was.....

Not a grandma.

We called my grandmother Nana and grandfather Papa. Papa was french and that's what he'd called his grands.

My kids call my MIL Mema. The eldest cousin came up with it and she loves it.

My mom was Granny. By the time I had kids, she enjoyed being a grandma. My oldest sister had my niece when she was 21, my mom was 40. She needed another 25 years to get used to the idea! The older grands were discouraged from using any grandma type term-but I don't remember what they DID call her. It wasn't until the 'second round' of kids came around that she asked to be called Granny.

Not a grandma here but my kids have 4.
My mom is Ma, my brothers and I call her that so the kids picked it up.
Her mom is Grandma again from us.
My dad's mom is Memere, pronounced Memay, french for grandma again from us.
DH's mom is Nanny
Her mom (deceased) was Nana

My aunt became a grand mother at a relatively young age and did not want to be called grandma so she is G-mom and my Uncle is G-pop.

my dad: Granddad they tried calling him Da but he wanted no part of it.

I'm not a grandmother, but I thought I'd pipe in:

I called my grandmothers Granny and Grandma. My boy's call dh's mom Imi (her name is Imajean) and my mom Grandmother or sometimes Grandma.

My kids call my mom "Regular Grandma" when they talk about her to other people. When calling her name (happens frequently since we spend so much time together) it's just Grandma. They call MIL Grandma firstname. My dad is "Pa"....he wanted to be Poppy because he heard that Pierce Brosnan's grandkids call him that. But the kids decided that Pa was it. Often, they just decide for the grown-ups.
