??? for golfers

Are golf shoes generally required on the golf course? If not, do you look like a total loser wearing regular shoes?

No, I have never been to a course where they are required. Plain old tennis shoes are fine. Are you playing or watching? DON'T wear golf shoes if you are watching, then you will look like a dork.

I don't think i've ever played a course where you were required to wear golf shoes but they help a lot if you play...Lots of courses require that your golf shoes DO NOT have metal spikes/cleats in them though...

I ask because my husband is playing golf with a client tomorrow. He's played in the past, but a LONG time ago. He doesn't have clubs, but is borrowing my dad's who also hasn't played for a long time. Anyhoo, he was just wondering if he's supposed to wear golf shoes. He used to have some, but I threw them away because he hadn't worn them in YEARS and they were collecting dust.

OK, so if no golf shoes, what type of shoes? Tennis shoes? But, he'll probably be wearing khaki pants. I don't know, what do people wear to play golf in the middle of a business day?

Actually, it depends on where you're playing. A lot of golf clubs require golf shoes these days. If you know the place he's playing, there are sites on the net that will tell you if they're required or not. If it's a country club, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they required softspikes. Just look up the place he's playing on the net...they should have the info posted somewhere on the site.

Not required but recommended. You won't look like a loser because there are so many brands out there that have shoes that look like everyday shoes like cross-trainers. Here's an example from Nike:

I've got a pair of the previous Nike Air Max Summer shoes. They look and feel like the old Nike Presto running shoes but made for golf. I like them better than most of the classic golf shoes.

If he insists on wearing non-golf shoes, I would suggest something with more grip on the soles. Believe me, soles with the grip make a big difference...regardless of how long ago he's played. However, I would suggest in investing in a cheap pair of golf shoes.

What to wear....hmmm depends on the weather. If it's hot & humid and if it were me, I would be wearing shorts. If it's comfortable to cool weather, some nice dockers with a polo shirt would be fine.

They don't require you to wear soft spikes, they require any spikes you may wear to be soft spikes. Almost every course in the country has this policy, but it doesn't mean you have to have on golf shoes, it just means you can't have metal spikes on if you are wearing golf shoes.

Regular old tennis shoes are fine, even with khakis. He is going to want something with some kind of traction when he swings or he could slip. Golf fashion doesn't necessarily match real world fashion.

Looked up the site and this is what it says under "attire". No mention of shoes, so he should be OK right. It does say further down on the page that no metal spikes are allowed. Saw no other mention of shoes.


Appropriate golf attire, including collared shirts, shall be worn at all times on the golf course, practice facility and in the clubhouse. Cutoff shorts, gym shorts, beachwear, T-shirts, halter or tank tops are not proper attire.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. He'll be just fine. He's got very little time left. Tell him to hit the range and work on the clubs he's not very comfortable with. I'd rather look bad in what I wear rather than how bad I play, know what I mean?

LOL!!! Well, I think we're screwed then. He hasn't played golf in at least 6 years. Hasn't even been to the driving range. At least I found out that he's the client, so I guess the pressure's on the other guy to impress.
