It's illegal in some places and a person shouldn't have to resort to passing on the right. There are signs on the highway that say Slower Traffic Keep Right. It's just common sense.

Actually it's only illegal in 2 states if you check out the laws here. I have also been on many multi-lane highways with no keep right signs, in fact the one I take to work everyday has none. I treat it like a 2 lane road, not a slow lane and a passing lane. If I want to pass someone I do regardless of position.

I have every right to travel in the left lane! I'm doing 75 miles an hour--10 miles over the limit on the expressway. That's plenty fast enough. If you need to pass me, you're going to have to do it on the right. I'm not apologizing for driving reasonably--if you want to go 90 it's your problem, not mine.

Actually, according to mickman's link, you do not have every right to drive in the left lane. The left lane is for passing only in Illinois.

I've been in that situation. I've had people flash their brights and then whip into the right lane. You can't get over if nobody gives you the chance.

I hate when people go like 40 in the left lane and then you come to find out that they are old and they shouldnt even be driving in the first place, I think after like the age of 90 you shouldnt drive anymore!!!!!

What you're doing is the worst form of aggressive driving...imposing your will on others who have no choice but to wait behind you until you wake up. What's in it for you to hold people up when you could just as easily be travelling in the proper lane? It baffles me.

Oooh, is this the thread for complaining about driving? I want in! I'm a perfectly respectable woman most of the time, but in traffic, I turn into a foul, cursing machine. Just some of the Things That Drive Me Crazy:

* people who are the first at the light and don't GO when it turns green, so that only two or three cars make it through...grrr

* people staring at each other like cattle at a four-way stop...grr, again

* there is a light before a railroad track in my town, with a sign that says "STOP HERE ON RED". It doesn't say "no turn on red", but that's what practically everyone reads it as and just sits there with their right blinker on, waiting for a green light

* lots of other things that I won't be able to think of until I've been stuck in traffic for awhile

The thing is, I have no reason to be hurrying anywhere; I shouldn't be so impatient.

I'm in the left lane because I'M TRYING TO GET AROUND SOMEONE!!! I simply choose to do it at 75 instead of 95! If I could go 75 clearly in the middle lane I would. I'm sick of having people up my behind in the left lane.

In all seriousness, I do understand the frustration of being stuck behind a turtle. I just think we need to have a reasonable expectation of acceptable speed. To me 75-80 is more than reasonable on the expressway. I don't think you can get on and expect to do 90-100 unimpeded. This is not the Autobahn!

If you are passing that is an entirely different situation. I thought you were implying that you will purposely travel in the left lane even when not overtaking. Sorry I misunderstood. Thank goodness you're not that clueless!

I always like when there is a cop on the side of the road who has somebody pulled over and everybody jams on the breaks. Do you really think that he is going to stop writing the ticket and come after you.

Whenever I drive on the beloved New Jersey Turnpike there will be somebody driving in the left lane doing the exact same speed as the person in the center lane and it's always around the speed limit. The left lane is for passsing. Normally this driver is from the state that boarder us to the north and they won't get out of the way for anybody.

If you are in the passing lane and a bazillion cars are passing you on the right....wait for it, here it comes......YOU NEED TO MOVE THE HELL OVER Jeeeezzzzzz. How can you not notice that?????? It is a "PASSING lane", not a "let's see how slow I can drive and how many people I can piss off lane"......especially when I am late getting back to work after lunch... change lanes and let me speed I'm just sayin'

I also agree with the 4-way stop. In our town people really do not understand how it works, they just sit there till someone honks at them and they go or they don't stop at all. Just run the stop sign.

O.K. another pet peeve. Right turn on red. You are only allowed to turn right on red if you do not interfer with the oncoming traffic that has the green light. I get crazy when someone turns out right in front of me, like they have the right of way. Do they not understand.
