For crying out loud -- "compassionate conservatism"?

The reason I think that this is good news is because most of the drugs covered by these prescription cards saw HUGE price increases before the cards came on line. So, while Seniors with the cards are getting a discount off the current price, they may not be paying much less than they were for the same drug just a few months ago.

I don't believe that the current administration changed any rules regarding food stamps, to me it's just an example of how people making changes aren't always aware of all it affects. There are so many government agencies overlooking so many programs that I don't think it is even possible to foresee how new programs will fit in. Luckily this glitch has been found, and it appears that it will be fixed. I am sure there will be others found as the drug program goes forward. I just hope that the people who need it most will be helped. But doctors also have to help and there has to be good communication between patients & their doctors. My own dad has high cholestrol and his doctor prescribed niacin. Turns out that this is an OTC drug and at the dosage he was to take, would be quite expensive. He has good prescription coverage from the job he retired from, so I suggested he ask his doctor for a prescription instead. Turns out the doctor thought he was doing my dad a favor by using the cheaper OTC drug.
Oh well, too long a post. but its a subject I am following both for my dad and me who is facing retirement in a few years.

For crying outloud..... We either need to put some sever limits on what can be purchased with food stamps or just get rid of the program all together.

I was at the grocery store on Friday. In front of me was a mother with two small kids in the cart. Both were eating/wearing chocolate covered doughnuts. In her cart were jewel pops, a large bag of cheetos and a case of coke. She paid for all of it with food stamps.

I stopped her on the way out and asked her if she really liked feeding her kids JUNK on my dime. I told her that if she could afford to spend MY money on that crap she obviously didn't need it.

I have no problem heping those who truely cannot help themselves. She, on the other hand, was fully capable of working. She should not be getting a free ride if she's not working. She should also be restricted from buying that kind of food on my money.

Food stamps should be limited to fresh fruits and vegtables, fresh meat and cold cuts, and other staple items (pasta, rice, beans, pb &j, breads etc).

I pay way too much in taxes to see some kid grow up on cheetos using MY money. If you liberals want to steal the fruits of others labors to keep this going, move to Russia, we don't want or need you in this country!

That was incredibly harsh thing to say to a stranger. It's none of your business what she buys for herself and her children. I don't care if she's using food stamps. You have no idea what her circumstances are.

How do you know she didn't have a job?

Sorry, I have to disagree. She was using MY MONEY which makes it MY BUSINESS. If everyone took an active interest in how their taxes were being squandered, maybe our taxes wouldn't be so high and the money would not be wasted.

While I would have NEVER approached this woman, I do agree with the Broken8ball on the principle here.

So I take it, Broken8Ball, you regularly visit the Amtrak station to tell them how to run their business? Or stop off at a government subsidized dairy farm, and remind them to recycle their manure? Or visit the recycling plant, and tell everyone on break to get back to work? Or knock on the windows of people driving SUVs or other gas-guzzlers, and tell them they need to get a car with better mileage, because their consumption is driving up demand and keeping gas prices high?

First of all, you have NO IDEA what the circumstances are that drove this woman to purchase what she did. Perhaps their was a family party (it *is* time for schools to end, after all) and she was allowing special treats for the kids to celebrate. And regarding her ability to work, again, you have NO IDEA of her circumstances. Ever hear of MS? or Rheumatoid Arthritis? Maybe Lupus? There are scores of debilitating diseases that you can't tell by looking whether someone has or not.

The government places no health restrictions on food stamps and they are the ones issuing the items. I don't think it's up to whoever happens to be standing around to govern how they're spent. If people have a gripe they should take it to the issuing entity not some lady who's out shopping!

Agree 100% with 8Ball! I've seen it a million times- food stamp mommas buying junk for themselves and their offspring. Even if you were not on food stamps, why in the world would you want to feed your kids a constant diet of sugar and fat? No wonder there's an obesity problem in this country!

And yes, it is my business as well, because its my taxes. And if food stamp mommas are so disabled that they can't work and support ONE child on their own, then why do they have MORE children? I say IF YOU CAN'T FEED IT, THEN DON'T BREED IT!

Yeah, sure. I'm sure dumb parenting had nothing to do with it.

No one has any idea about anything, but everyone has the right to their own opinion. I agree with 8Ball, and glad he/she had the gusto to say something to her about it. It's my $$ that she was using too, and I think more people should look into helping themselves instead of handouts from the govt. That's all I have to say about that..........

So, assuming you have children, you're saying you've never in your life bought your kids cheetohs, soda, or ice-pops? Or, as a kid, never had them yourself? Because I would think if you have, you're including yourself and/or your parents in that group.

So it's ok to publicly attack and humiliate strangers? Are you kidding me? I doubt seriously she had the cajones to even tell someone that to their face.

As for MY tax dollars, I don't care what she buys. It's not my job to police others. If you don't like the way the program is run, then write a letter to your state representative and state your opinion.

And hopefully YOU will never be in a situation where you are made to feel like a second class citizen.

Sorry my friend but I believe your mistaken. Once taxes are collected it becomes the money of the federal government. It's no longer your money.

I wonder how many chocolate dougnuts and bags of cheetos we could have bought with YOUR money that we spent on Reagan's recent funeral?

She should have told you to mind your own freaking business, because it's definitely none of yours! She proabably did set you in your place, but you just failed to mention that.

While I wouldn't have said anything to the woman, I agree 100% that I hate to see people buying junk food with their foodstamps.

Just like I hate to see people using foodstamps and then pulling out the cash to buy a 25 pound bag of dog food or kitty litter. If you can't afford to pay for your own food, you sure as hell shouldn't be trying to support a pet.

There whould be strict restrictions on what a person can buy with food stamps. Actually, I don't think there should be food stamps at all, but that's a pipe dream, so..

I would not have approached her, too many crazy people in the world.
