Oh yeah, and I can avoid morning Chicago traffic by taking 355 to 80 now. As long as there are no accidents on 80 or 65. We used to eat breakfast at the Lincoln Oasis if we had to leave early. But I don't think I'd take the Tri-State anymore since I don't have to.

You ever thought about taking 80 to 57 to Kankakee to Il 17/In 10 across to I-65 to avoid NW Indiana? A few miles longer and have to go thru 2 lights, but could be worth it..

It's been 6 years since I drove this and I had to pick up DH in the city so we probably took the skyway. Couldn't tell you....

Now that you can get on 80 in the west suburbs, 57 is an option. When taking 294, I think getting to 57 is tougher, right? And we're talking next summer, so I have time to think about it.....

Correct, as of now you can not get onto 57 directly from 294, need to exit at 80 and then head back west...

bc, i remember when i was a kid, im now 44, sitting in the back seat grumbling about the construction around jacksonville!!! it was the last hurdle of the trip. back then, orlando was a dot on the map.

We have a group of 10 brave Classic 25+ yr old VW campervans coming down from NY and taking the coastal roads along the atlantic seaboard (MD,VA,NC,SC,GA,FL) last week of April-1st week May 2010
each day is about ~200miles and the Journey is part of the destination. Surf & camping to FL then some WDW camping @ Fort Wilderness before heading back north via the Amtrak Autotrain out of Sanford,FL

Yes, we have taken Exit #68 the last two times when we stayed at the HIE in Lake Buena Vista after straight-through drives. The next morning, we drive out of the hotel parking lot, makes two left turns and a WDW entrance is right there ...although it leads to DTD via Hotel Plaza Blvd.

If we don't make it all the way to lake Buena Vista for our overnight stay, we prefer Exit #67. Bigger entrance ride. More excitement. Greater anticipation via Epcot Center Drive and World Drive (and then to the GF via Seven Seas Drive and Floridian Way).

355! That little beauty has cut at least 45 aggrivating munutes off the start of our trip from the Western Burbs...I LOVE it!

i still have my dads maps. he passed in 1984. they are from the mid to late 70s, there is a broken line on 95 going thru jacksonville and just an outline going around jacksonville. im telling you, columbus started that construction project!!

grrrrrrrrrrrr i should have remembered that!!! my parents took be to (pardon the spelling, say it like i spelled it) viskyya when i was a kid. i was about 10, i have some of the pictures yet of the mansion.

Last June, we just plugged our destination into the GPS and followed its route, which of course took us right down 95. This year, we'd like to try the 81-77-26-95 and pick up 95 so that we can spend the night in S. Carolina.

My question is about the GPS. Does anyone know if you can input the route you want to take into the GPS or do you just have to put your destination in and follow it? I'd like to use the GPS instead of an old fashioned map, but I don't want to take 95 all the way down.

If worse comes to worse what you do is split the GPS route into two segments. You can do NY to somewhere in VA and then do VA to FL or wherever you plan on stopping.

Most GPS devices I have seen will recalculate the route once you stray from what it told you to do. So if your device does not allow you to input specific roads or routes, at worst you could get around it that way.

I have done that plenty of times, we refer it to pissing off jill,(name of voice on GPS), but sooner or later she will go the way we want to go.
