My husband has a Garmin that he likes. I dislike them. I really like to know where I am etc and follow maps. Most of the GPS systems have really come down. You can get one of the best ones probably for 300 or less. I've seen some for around 100 on sale. I have heard that Garmin is one of the best.

Drivers here. Well I should say I am a passanger DH is the driver. I offer but it always gets turned down LOL. We normally leave NJ around 2-3am so we can beat all the traffic in and around DC. We get to Savannah around 3-4pm and spend the night. Then get up early and head out. Last years trip cost us $150 plus food and that included hotel. I do a lot of internet shopping and do some rewards programs right now I have $150 in gas cards for this trip. Plus our rewards from a credit card. We love driving the kids do as well.

Ok, another question here. My DH and I changed our plans and now we are driving down on a Friday night from near Dulles Airport to 4-5 hours down the road, stopping around 11pm -12am or so. This way we get a head start and don't have to get up at 4:30am (we are night people).

However, we are undecided on how to do the hotel, since advance reservations will charge us after 4 or 6pm.

DH wants to priceline while on the road or just call a hotel when we get tired. (CON -- we may not get a room or be charged more)

I'm thinking it's smarter to just guesstimate where we want to end up and get a hotel in advance. (CON -- we may decide to travel further than the hotel, or run into traffic and be bone-tired to make our destination that night).

I told him I'd come to my DIS TRAVEL GURUS for advice.

Most GPS devices I have seen will recalculate the route once you stray from what it told you to do. So if your device does not allow you to input specific roads or routes, at worst you could get around it that way.

Our GPS got mad at us after recalculating several times! On the way home, it keeps telling us to take I65 from I24. We do not like that route as we take I24 to I57 to Chicago. After passing that exit and several subsequent exits that the Nuvi wanted us to use and then back track to I65, it finally said "There is no route from this point to your destination" and shut down. We were on I24 just past Nashville on our way to I57 (where I24 ends by merging into I57).

There is no easy way around or through Charlotte. From Statesville south through Charlotte into SC. There is always traffic, sometimes really bad, unless you can time it so you go through it late at night. We would rather go around DC than via Charlotte.

I have been waiting and waiting ..... to be the numbeer for this post as it is the exact number of miles we drove on our trip to Disney and back last August!

We drove this route Dec. 26, 27, 2009. It was a breeze. No traffic at all. Now, it was about 11:30am on a Sunday morning, so that may have helped!

I made it from Niagara Falls to the world! Drove 90 to 390 to US15 then hit Maryland and went around DC stopping south of Richmond on 95 for the night. Then straight down 95 the next day. About 20 hours of actual driving and less than 100 bucks of gas before we hit our first destination at St Augustine FL. Then it was just a couple of hours to WDW from there.

We have a group of 10 brave Classic 25+ yr old VW campervans coming down from NY and taking the coastal roads along the atlantic seaboard (MD,VA,NC,SC,GA,FL) last week of April-1st week May 2010
each day is about ~200miles and the Journey is part of the destination. Surf & camping to FL then some WDW camping @ Fort Wilderness before heading back north via the Amtrak Autotrain out of Sanford,FL

hey dan , i thought of you today. i live near allentown pa, theres a vw bus sitting in a driveway for sale!!! its a newer one, meaning its not 60s i would say maybe 80ish.looks in good shape. maybe ill join you guys. i see the caravan is coming thru my area!!

Having seen the "peanuts on a plane" thread, we thought we would ask what kinds of food do the veteran 2,000+ mile round-trip drivers (and passengers) bring with them on their journey to WDW.

For us, it's bagels in the a.m., several sandwiches throughout the day, all kinds of non-alcolohic beverages in our cooler (from Red Bull and ice tea to lemonade and water), and an assortment of snacks.
