First off, :worship: to those who drive straight thru.

Second, :worship: to those who drive overnight.

Third,:worship::worship::worship: to those who drive during the day time and suffer traffic.

This has to be one of the worst drives I have taken anywhere.
I95 rout to and from.

4/12 Long story short it took us 15 hours to get from Brooklyn NY to Lumberton NC. Traffic, traffic, traffic starting in NJ didn’t clear til Richmond. “Construction” was the claim.

Lumberton, NC to BLT, was another 8 hrs, some traffic here and there.

4/19 Return trip, BLT to Smithfield NC took about 12 hours, multiple jams and accidents. The weather didn't help as we drove through the rain.

Smithfield NC to Brooklyn was another 9 hours and we took a detour before Fredericksburg, back on I95 after Baltimore, which shaved off 1 hour, but still got jammed on the NJ Turnpike from the Woodrow rest stop to 8A as they continue to expand the NJ Turnpike.

I need another vacation. And to think we will do this again in December, during Christmas :rotfl2::rotfl2:

I loved our drive on our last trip so much, that we are doing it again in 18 weeks. But what you described is my nightmare. We had zero problems when we made the drive, outside of a little construction in Nashville and traffic in Atlanta. I'm just afraid our luck is going to run out this time around. But then I tell myself, as long as we get there safe and sound and in one piece, that's all that really matters.

78/81/77 . get out of the city by 3:30am :thumbsup2

Did you ever notice posts on the transportation thread that deal with drives that are obviously more than 1,000 miles each way but don't get posted here because, perhaps, the "2,000+ mile round trip" reference isn't comprehended? ;)

Go figure! :teacher:

All the best. :thumbsup2

I've never noticed this thread before. How fun! We usually drive down because air travel makes me turn green. We are just under 1000 mile one way and live in Ohio. We are driving down in 20 days! We are taking I-77 and I-95 down. On the way home we are stopping off at St. Augustine for a couple of days.

Thankful we will miss most of the NJ Turnpike!! My mom got stuck in it on 4/21 after leaving our house for Easter. We are off Exit 5 and leaving at night. What time did you leave? We'll be making the drive after dinner in 6 days!!! Oh and we'll also be taking 295 until we get into Delaware.

well I got the nod from the boss. looks like I will be heading down in the weeeeee hours of Thursday morning. ( hopefully things go ok ) I should get there around 5pm Thursday night and head home Tuesday night.

I will only be in the parks one day (mk), its a working trip but there is always time to stop and say hello.so I will be able to add to my trip count but only one day to the day count. just cant drive by and not stop. :thumbsup2

We were in that mess of a drive.

Left the Tampa area (Zephyrhills) at 6am on 4/19 and arrived at our hotel in Springfield, VA at 11pm. Was a long day in dreary weather. Bypassed some of the I-95 traffic in SC by taking Route 17.

while dh jokes about leaving at 5am, right after he feeds dd, we left at 9am from each starting point due to ds.

Wow......I'm getting a little nervous now about the 95 traffic and construction! I know Philly to Richmond can be a bear, but I'm hoping for smooth sailing from Richmond to Orlando!

Question on the 78/81/77 as this route may be a game time decision. How is the driving at night and are there plenty of safe places for rest stops?

Richmond south bound to Lake Buena Vista (you've got to pass Orlando to get to WDW) is usually "smooth sailing" except for congestion south of mm 75 on I-4.

[And dvczerfs is headin' out on the highway yet again!]

All the best. :thumbsup2

Looks like we'll be hitting the road 5/23!!
Just booked Windsor Hills condo for the week for $535 total!
I'm afraid of Memorial day weekend traffic though, as we've never gone away then...we'll be going 81-77-26-95 route.

Just wondering. We will be driving from the Niagara region in Ontario Canada. I know the route to Florida has a couple of tolls. Where can I go to calculate what the toll fares will be ahead of time. We cross at the peace bridge (fort Erie/buffalo)

What is the better route (fastest?). We will be driving over night straight through.

And lastly where can I go to see if there is construction on the way. We will be going at the end of September.

Thanks for the help "Pros"

Sounds good! Safe travels to you!
Just curious are there still delays on...I think it was near the end of 81 or 77 due to construction? Last June when we drove down it was a nightmare :crazy2:

Hello all, reporting on our drive to WDW and back from Upstate NY via I-90, I-79, US19, I-77, I-95, I-4, and FL 417.

The trip down was April 11 and 12 stopping over in Charlotte NC.
Smooth sailing in NY, PA, WV, VA, NC and SC until....
screeeech those 2 lanes of I-95 in SC. heavy heavy traffic, rubberbanding, accidents, awful. Got off for lunch at Sonny's in Brunswick and it eased up after that, and back to 3 lanes in GA. FL a little tight but moving. False traffic problems reported on GPS through Jacksonville just like our last drive a year ago... use a smartphone with Google or Bing maps showing traffic if you can to verify. Once on I-4 we sailed through the construction zone because it was a holiday weekend I think. BUT oh that I-4 through Orlando... we invested in a Sunpass a few years ago and used it to detour to FL 417 tollway (formerly know as the entertainer named The Greenway.) Clear sailing on that of course... delay on I-4 would have been 20-30 minutes, while 417 is 10 minutes longer and yes, costs a few dollars too. Almost no speed enforcement
the whole way. Rainy in WV including some downpours but did not cause delays.

The return trip was Easter Sunday and Monday stopping over in Beckley WV.
I-4 was clear even through Orlando being Easter Sunday morning. I-95 was okay but rough again through the 2 lanes in SC. We actually got off early with accidents being reported ahead and took an alternate route across to I-26 (oddly, same as we did a year ago). Then it was clear sailing to WV. Monday morning there was heavy speed enforcement in PA and NY. Kept it to no more than 10 over or with flow of traffic.

All in all a good drive. All other constructions zones were a simple lane reduction with little to no delay.

Making our second drive from Wisconsin end of July. Last time we stopped for the night in Lookout Mountain area, but can not find the information of where we stayed. Does anyone have any suggestions?
