does the 77/26 way have piles of hotels along the way like 95- so you can just stop and get a room when you are tired?
There are hotels but we always book ours ahead of time...I go by the reviews on tripadvisor plus we have 3 kids so we need a larger room with 2 beds and sofabed.

same boat here with 3 kids. You have any spots you regularly like to stop- or just prowl tripadvisor?

We've been happy with Country Inn and Suites, but they are all configured differently so you'll need to check around in advance. There are studio suites with 2 queens and a sofabed, or 1 king and a sofabed. Some of them are regular rooms only and others are 2 room suites. I guess it depends on the owners.

They always have a pretty good breakfast and a nice lobby. Rooms have always been clean, nothing special, but good enough. We always get a 2 room suite.

They are running specials right now if you sign up for their e-mail list. 30% off, no deposit or pre-payment required. We have already reserved our room for our trip on the way down for $71 for the 1BR Suite in Savannah GA. Good deal!

Last time we stayed here on the drive down:
Country Inn & Suites Columbia, SC
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re..._Suites_Columbia-Columbia_South_Carolina.html

$103 with tax

and here on the drive back
Comfort Inn & Suites
19521 Liverpool Pkwy., Cornelius, NC,
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...fort_Inn_Suites-Cornelius_North_Carolina.html

$99 plus tax for the night

I am very picky and am happy to say that both places were clean and very nice(also have to have queen size beds, no full). The free breakfast and ease of getting back on the road were a plus as well! :thumbsup2

I think my post got lost.

78 days :cool1:

We're leaving Friday, December 20th around 4:30 from shoreline CT (about 30 minutes from New Haven). The last few trips we took the inland route and liked it much better.

I'm assuming we should go that way again because otherwise we'll run into NYC traffic and maybe also some further south?

This time we'll have 2 drivers because DH is coming

Thanks!!

I seen it!!! we are leaving Wednesday December 18th and coming home December 29th. I am thinking of going 81/66/17/95/4 instead of 81/77/26/95/4. unless it is going to be above freezing in the mountains.

I do like the inland route better. it is about hour faster for me. we have a resi. near Richmond Wednesday night. we are hitting the road around noon/one on Wednesday. most likely hit Richmond early, sleep and hit the road at 1am. if the weather don't look good, ill cancel the resi and head further south, maybe all the way. we are going to play it by ear. :thumbsup2

I was going to bring the Nissan but the benz is a lot better if we hit snow. not that im planning on driving in the snow. I will leave early or late to avoid it but just in case.

Don't you DARE mention snow on this trip!!! I swear if you jinxed it I will never forgive you :rotfl:

Anybody concerned about how the storm may affect their drive down in the next few days? We are leaving SE Mass on Monday AM, taking the inland route, with a planned stop in Atlanta Wednesday to visit friends. Looks like we may be on the far western edge of the storm on Tuesday if predictions hold true.

We are going in August and have a small caravan from RI going.....I think we might try this "inland" route everyone is talking about. We usually just go 95 the whole way, but maybe after 15 driving trips its time to shake it up a bit. :thumbsup2

We are outside of Philly and just go 95 the whole way every time. Never had a major problem.

what time do you leave not to get stuck in the nightmare that is 95 south of DC?

We usually are leaving NJ (about 1hr north of philly) friday afternoon/evening is no matter how early or late we get to the other side of DC it always seems to be a parking lot- no matter if it's 4:30p or 10:30p

We've had that happen in the summer, but not in the winter. IT's all Virginia beach traffic.

Departures from home that get you to southern MD before 5:30 a.m. are esssential if you want to avoid the greater DC morning rush hour traffic jam. And for us, that means leaving anytime around midnight from the Jersey Shore. [It takes us four hours to get from Barnegat Bay to the VA border.]

We are planning another midnight departure later this month for drive #30.

All the best. :thumbsup2

We made it to Valdosta GA where we'll some the night and up early in the morning to head to wdw. Traffic on I75 a little heavier than I'd hoped but no major problems. The car in front of me hit an alligator (tire retread piece) and it came flying at us and we hit it too. Scary and black mark on front of car but no real damage. Ready to let Disney do the driving for a while! Lol

Cheryl!!! Where have you been hiding? Lol I wouldn't go the inland. It's the pits!!! Traffic, people speeding. Just rotten. Stick to 95. Lol
