I know talking about the price of gas is like the national pastime - but I'm curious if in the scheme of things does it change anyone here's mind about if they are doing to drive to disney or not?

I always wonder when the AAA says "people are staying closer to home this holiday becasue gas prices are 50 cents more than last year"- who changes their mind to drive to Disney becasue it's going to cost $50 more in gas for a typical car that can get 20 MPG on the highway?

It's a little shocking sometimes when i hit a more expensive locale but i figure hec, i'm in, you only live once. What's everyone else think?

We're leaving on the drive this Thursday after I finish work. DH has the day off to get the last minute stuff done around the house & get the car packed.

As far as the gas prices go, it is what it is. I prefer driving to flying. I can take much more stuff in the car and we have the freedom while we are there to go to a store or off property if we feel like it (which isn't often) without having to rent a car. When we cruise I also pay to park at port rather than at an offsite lot. I prefer to have my car undercover and there when we get back. I just figure the cost of gas & parking as part of our vacation.

As we are getting older I am finding the trip down & back to be getting to be a drag and we have been taking the Auto-train one way. This trip will be round trip driving unless I can get a really good rate by going to the station in Sanford when we get back from our cruise. Our trip home will be the first day of hunting season which kind of worries me.

I know gas prices have had an effect on what car we choose to drive, and I guess if the price dropped a lot more, it might move up the next trip by a few months...because I'd be sure to take advantage of that kind of dip before it all went away! And, if it stuck? All the better.

The gas stations that were at $3.00 late last week are now $3.15 this morning! But unless there is a drastic price change, I would think the overall effect on a drive is minimal. A 25 cent per gallon increase adds $10 in cost per thousand miles for a 25 mpg vehicle.

it just gives me some thing to complain about.

the way I look at it, I use 100 gallons total. if it went up a buck a gallon, that's $100 more. if $100 would make or break me, I shouldnt be going on vacation much less wdw in the first place.

We have done the drive during those time frames; and we are fellow RIers. As long as you stick to the leave extremely early, you should be fine; barring any snow storms along the way. We came home first of January and the snow in the Carolina's was nuts....couldn't see anything.

I have done it a few times. we are leaving December 18th and will be coming home on the 29th. chepic gave you some good advise.

This is pretty much true of the first snowstorm in New England, too. *lol*

Yeah, it was weird. We left Florida at 4am, hit the SC border and all of a sudden it was pure white with traffic at a crawl. That was the year we took our whole family down, 22 of us in 2 cars and a 15 passenger van, chatting on cb's. Now that is dating it, lol

the best is when they all finally realize they dont know how to drive and make for the exits. Then one invariably slides sideways on the ramp or off the road or something like that and jams the exit. if they do that for a few exits in a row then 95 literally becomes a parking lot.

(edit: and just to be clear- apparently unfamiliarity with weather emergencies is regional based and NOT specific to the south east. When a hurricane hits NJ we're all pretty clueless apparently. No one ever has enough gas cans or extension cords for their generators.

pretty much my thought exactly. If you are heading to disney your in for thousands so what's another 100. I can't think of too many vacations aside from camping that you could take where 100 bucks would be a big percentage. Always odd to me when AAA makes those predictions.

on the way down- just watch the weather channel and see the deal. if you think about it the roads really are a mess 24hrs of less.

So if it looks like the snow is going to hit smack dab in the middle of the drive- yank the kids out of school half day early and make a break for it. Or GASP- wait half a day longer and go after the storm. I'll let you guess what my family does.

we got stuck yeeeears ago in a snow storm up in the blue ridge mtns of i81. now, I watch the weather and will leave early or later to avoid storms. a few years ago we left wdw a day early to miss an ice storm that we got here at home.
unless its the storm of the century, they get things cleaned up pretty well. missing an extra day of work or school because you had to stay in a hotel for a day to miss a storm is better then killing your family and yourself driving in a storm.
