Foods that you refuse to purchase for your family

I don't buy foods with artificial colours, flavours or preservatives so we cook just about everything from scratch.
Keeps me very busy in the kitchen!!!

Processed foods, any meat in a can, frozen dinners, whole milk (only lactose free milk), canned veggies, and any types of pre-packaged lunch meat.

I am another everything in moderation with a copule of exceptions:

-soda (I have diabetes)
-artificial sweeteners of any kind because they trigger my IBS

That's pretty much it. If I didn't have either health condition I would probably consume both of those as well, but since I do, I don't.

I don't refuse to buy anything as long as it doesn't take us over budget.

We do keep soda in the house (I drink diet coke and dd likes coke zero). She drinks juice everyday (which is too sugary too actually but at least it has vitamin C) at breakfast and at lunch (comes with the school lunch) and milk at lunch too. She may have a serving or two of coke zero some days or none at all some days.

She picks one or two "junky" snacks each week and can have a serving or so a day (again, some days she eats none). Otherwise she eats veggies and fruits with every meal and has some fruit after school each day.

I have noticed over the years that the kids who never had soda or junk food at home, would just about OD on it when they came to my house. Where as my kids very rarely paid that much attention to the stuff being around.

IDH loves Mountain Dew, takes one a day with his lunch to work. He REALLY likes the Throwbacks (cane sugars, not HFCS), so we are stocking up on them while we can get them. I was SO excited to read that they will be releasing a "Heritage Dr. Pepper".. I don't drink hardly any soda at all, but sometimes I crave a Dr. Pepper SOOOO badly. Now I can have one with no HFCS!!
Maybe the Dr Pepper will be coming from Dublin, Texas? http://www.dublindrpepper.com/

Luckily we can find this in our area because it is expensive to order.

I'll buy whatever they want. I see nothing wrong with eating whatever you would like in moderation. A diet of straight junk food is not good but if they want junk food once in a while..no biggie. Processed, canned, organic, HFCS...it's all good with me.

ANYTHING W/Aspertame!

in this house also (or any artificial sweeteners)....I get instant migraines from them.

Did you know even sweetened gum has artificial sweeteners in it??

I don't buy anything with MSG in it, it plays havoc with my seizure disorder. For the same reason, nothing with artificial sweetners. My neurologist has confirmed that both artificial sweetners and MSG can be major neurological triggers for people who suffer from migraines or seizures.

I also try to avoid things with HFCS. I don't think its a catastrophe if we eat a little of it, but I do my best to avoid it.

Only other things I refuse to buy are onions. Everyone in the house hates them - DH and I literally feel ill if we eat them.

We have the Heritage Dr. Pepper in the house now...it doesn't taste quite the same but it is good.

We also offer our DD16 occasional wine with dinner( I think we started this when she was about 14) . Wine, especially red wine, has a lot of antioxidents in it and is very good for your health in small quantities. It also does not promote weight gain, unlike juice which can really raise blood sugar. No reason to drink your calories. DD has a BMI of about 17, so she must be doing something right.[/quote]

How about water?
If your eating so well I don't think any child should have wine with dinner because of antioxidants:scared1:

Yeah, I really have to watch my labels. between avoiding that, and avoiding HFCS, I spend an inordinately large amount of time standing in the aisles of the grocery store reading labels. :rotfl:

I hate how MSG is sometimes hidden under a different name. There's about 2 or 3 different names, I think.

No not kidding. She started this without about an ounce on her 6th birthday this year. Very good for her health.
!

Please let this be a troll response!

I hope this is just a joke...to be fine with an ounce of liquor in your six year old is insane not to mention against the law!

I've even read that there are as many as 6...only saying because we try to avoid it but it's getting hard to keep up with all the labeling.

My kids sometimes ask what Twinkies taste like. We talk about them sometimes being part of our childhood, but they've never actuallly had one. They've never really asked to get them, so it probably won't happen. :upsidedow

I drank about an ounce of wine from a gold chalice every week starting at age 8 ;)

We avoid all processed meats, never buy beef and avoid all nitrate containing products. Otherwise we try to buy organic, but we are not zealots. The kids have junk food once and a while when we are out or at a party. I don't want them to indulge in the future on anything that is taboo.

I get it but your parents weren't pouring.......Amen;)

I was speaking from a legal standpoint, since you mentioned it was illegal.

While I do believe there are benefits to red wine, I don't know if I'd be willing to give my small child it on a daily basis, I would worry about doing it long term and causing liver damage. I'm not going to preach to the pp, but just wondering if that is a concern you have with giving your child alcohol every day?

Brussel sprouts. I made a promise to my kids when they were just babies that I would never make them eat brussel sprouts and I plan on keeping that promise!!
