Foods that you refuse to purchase for your family

Brussel sprouts. I made a promise to my kids when they were just babies that I would never make them eat brussel sprouts and I plan on keeping that promise!!

 Used to feel the same way!

Have you tried the Green Giant, frozen, steam in the bag brussel sprouts?

My younger DS and I both like these. When he's around and I fix them and pour them in a bowl, he will walk by and actually "sneak" one and pop it in his mouth. Amazing!! I won't say they are the best thing I have ever eaten, but they really are pretty good.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that.

Not only an I thinking against the law IMHO it's abusive.

I remember a news story that the parents were just giving their child a "sip" of alcohol to calm them down & Mom lost custody.

It's not against the law in every state. In Wisconsin, a parent can bring their minor child into a BAR and allow them to drink alcohol. There isn't even an age limit on that but it is to the bartenders discretion. So, technically, you could bring in your six-year-old and give them a drink.

I'm not sure why this is so shocking. People in Italy give their babies diluted wine from a very young age. By the time they are six they drink about an ounce with a meal. It's really not shocking outside of our Puritan U.S.

I haven't had brussel sprouts since I was a kid and absolutely HATED them (my parents still made me eat them). I know it sounds silly, but I don't think I could even bring myself to try them again. It's one of those childhood lifelong traumatize things. Maybe I should make it one of my new years resolution, try Green Giant frozen brussel sprouts.

Oatmeal, they never rinse the bowl out! Then it is a dryed on hard mess....:headache:

Oh, yeah; I have some foods that I feel that way about, too. I know just how you feel.

Actually I tried those completely by accident. I meant to buy peas. Picked up the bag at the store, took it home, put it in the freezer and took it out a few nights later and put it in the microwave; all the while thinking it was peas!! :rotfl: Anyway I tore the bag open and poured them out and THEN realized this was not peas!

After all that I decided I should at least taste them. I think its just a difference in the texture. I remembered them being mushy and sort of falling apart in your mouth--blech! But these aren't like that.

I think it's silly to see that some of you refuse to buy organic... why?

A lot of the time it's the same price, and sometimes cheaper.

I understand prefering not to buy organic but refusing?????

Processed foods, any meat in a can, frozen dinners, whole milk (only lactose free milk), canned veggies, and any types of pre-packaged lunch meat.
I won't buy canned meat either.

I think you have to take into account where you live. ;)

Here, and I assume a lot of other places, it's NOT the same price or cheaper. Sometimes it's twice the amount as non-organic. So, while I don't have a set *rule*, I guess you could say that I refuse to buy organic because I never buy it....LOL!

Pop tarts, donuts, soda, ice cream, snack cakes...love these but we have a diabetic in the family with no willpower :rolleyes1

All Purpose Flour (because I am cleaning my pantry today and have found about 5 bags. ;). I'm good for a while )

Jezzy peeps, they even have a web site,(and it says it all about them) yeah, just noodles and yuk, you add boiling water.

Cup O Noodles yeah we have them here. I don't like them, but I love Ramen Noodles which are similar.

There is nothing I refuse to buy outright but I do have preferences (avoid HFCS, or hydrogenated fats, or just outright junk there are a few generics that I find subpar so I don't buy those). However everything in moderation and I can live with that.

Spam... vienna sausage...

otherwise... my grocery cart usually contains many of the items posters here *refuse* to buy! :rotfl2:

I refuse to buy organic for several reasons. To those who do eat organic, this is a fight you'll never win, so I avoid mostly avoid talking about it and just do as I like. But since you asked... I have done a lot of research into the industry of organic food and I don't agree with many of their business models which are more harmful to the environment and less sustainable than traditional farming. I've also researched the claims of nutritional superiority and haven't found enough credible information to back the claims.

With issues like this it is often difficult to sort through rhetoric and find fact. In the future there may be evidence presented that gives me cause to change my mind, and I'm open to that. But for right now, I don't buy organic. What I do try to do it buy local as much as possible. Although the cost of fruit and veggies at the farmers market vs. the cost at the grocery store are sometimes a hindrance to this.

This isn't a hot button issue for me, and I feel no need to change anyone's mind, but those are my personal reasons. :flower3:
