Food prices going up!

When we're at WDW I usually skip breakfast, have a very light lunch, and have a good Dinner.
The Lunch prices are not a bargain and Breakfast prices are God awful.

It makes total sense. You can't experience Disney attractions anywhere except their theme parks so you don't mind paying a premium. On the other hand you can find better food for lower prices almost anywhere else.
Places outside (close) are inflated too. McDonald's prices & ihop. I'd say you don't save much eating at them. Bring your own combines with some in park treats is reasonable.

Did prices just now increase, or were they already increased in early February? I was there 2/4-2/6 and didn't notice anything overly expensive other than the BB-8 cups, which I bought 2 of.

The Plaza Inn chicken is now $18.00? :faint: Last month it was still about $14.00.
What about thee Churros? :)
$4.25 each is unholy high as it is. Ugh..... Lol No really man!
And.....has anyone called DLR lately? I so totally hate their new auto system and menu. It's damned downright annoying!

The other night DH and I had dinner at Cafe Orleans in DLR. We observed two young ladies who ordered Pommes Frites and sodas as their meal since everything else was twice the price or more. Or maybe they just really wanted to eat expensive french fries, who knows? :confused3

Did you overhear them say they ordered those particular things because of the prices of other things on the menu or are you just assuming?

Pomme frites are all I'll eat non-dessert wise at Cafe Orleans, but I can't finish an entire basket on my own. Not without getting sick, that's for sure. And I love pomme frites.

The order you described is pretty close to what my mom and I usually order (although she often gets coffee instead of a soda when we've gone to Cafe Orleans). Occasionally she'll get a cup of gumbo or a salad, but she's still sharing my basket with me and I'm not getting anything else. I find it a nice place to sit and have a small meal. We don't order a lot because we don't like eating full meals. Has nothing to do with the price.

Sorry to butt in with this, but the comment just struck me as making assumptions about another person's order when it could have just been "they like to eat expensive French fries". Perhaps they're like me and it's a nice small meal that isn't incredibly greasy. Now, if you did hear them say they ordered as they did because everything else was too expensive, then ignore me and my apologies :). Not trying to be rude.

It'll be interesting to see the prices when I'm there in a week, that's for sure.

No worries. We don't know each other, so no offence here... and of course I assumed, but that is why I added the comment about the french fries. They did both go over the menu for quite a while and asked a bunch of questions to the waiter before they ordered. Made me believe they hadn't ever eaten there before because then they'd known to have shared a basket. They each ordered their own and yes, they didn't finish them off. We always order the Pomme Frites also, but only one basket... and the two of us never finish them.

So much gets lost when we can't hear inflection so forgive the extra concern :). I also tend to talk/write too much, haha!

It is interesting how different experiences cause us to view things differently. From your description, it sounds to me that they didn't like anything on the menu (picky and/or sensitive stomach people like myself). I definitely agree, though, they do seem like it was their first time there.

We'll never know. You could be correct that the cost was off-putting for them. I'd be foolish to say it wasn't a deciding factor for many people. But there are others like me who are just, well, akin to birds with how we eat. The fact they ordered one each I could see going either way... Either it being a cheaper option or it being the only appetizing thing on the menu and not realizing how large that basket is.

Thanks for the extra information :). Hope you didn't mind me presenting the alternate view and I appreciate having yours elaborated so I could better understand it.

Food prices usually go up at Disneyland right before or around the time that ticket prices increase, so this doesn't surprise me. Plaza Inn chicken was $16.49 when we ordered it in both November and during our New Year's trip. It is now $17.49 so has gone up in price by $1 with the latest increase. I expect many items around the resort went up by a $1-$2 minimum. Theme park inflation. Happens every year. We already tend to choose lower priced options and share meals anyway, so we just figure it will be a little more expensive every year. I didn't pay attention to a lot of the pricing when we were there last week, but I do remember thinking geez, really? when I saw that the soup bowls at Pacific Wharf Cafe finally crossed the $10 line. Expect to pay $10.49 now for your cup of soup in a bread bowl. My son picked that for his dinner one evening and declared himself full when done, so in the end, it wasn't really that bad of a deal since it satisfied him.

DL is a resort and a tourist spot, so it's not a surprising that prices have increased. And yes, even the surrounding establishments outside of the parks are going to be inflated. We've learned to either eat before or after we go to the parks, bring snacks or we might share something. We just suck it up at the nicer restaurants because if I'm gonna pay higher prices, it's will be for the experience and food I can't get anywhere else like at BB, CCR, the Tiki Room for a Dole Whips or drinks and apps at Cove Bar, Alfresco Lounge and Trader Sam's. I don't mind paying for a corn dog if I feel like having one, but I can get a better burger elsewhere for a lot less money.

It's not so much that the price increases, it's that it increases far more than is necessary to account for inflation + some extra profit. Constantly raising prices by 20% or more is greedy. Do what you need to do to keep your costs in check, make yourself a good profit, but stop gouging people just because you can. That's my take on it.

Why increase the prices that much? It kind of turns me off going again. It's already expensive anyway.
I imagine that when Star Wars Land is completed the prices will be even more crazier.

Disney will continue to increase prices as long as people continue to pay them, but that goes for anywhere.

There will always be people that pay, but when food prices get too high guests will cut back on other discretionary spending like for souvenirs. Or they will choose to eat offsite more or bring in food.

That's Disney's problem, now isn't it?

I agree. After seeing what they've been up to the last couple months, I'm terrified to see what they have up their sleeves when the new stuff opens!

What have they been up to? Are you referring to the higher food prices and ticket prices? Or something else?
And I feel when they complete the new land they will try to justify the new higher prices. :scared1:

Lots of cuts in staff and entertainment in spite of record profits coupled with announcement of the high dollar after hours event and moderately high dollar before hours event. Oh, and don't forget the "preferred parking" upcharge.

It's pretty bad though when dining and snacks end up costing so much that you have to pay a deposit first, then pay for your meals on a monthly installment plan. To add insult upon injury, those dining plans have just short of an illegal interest rate. So......eat now, pay later and until the cows really do come home. And them cows can be grazing way in the back 40 too man! Lol
