Food Pics Without Freaking People Out?

Ok. I have a trip coming up and am going with my sister & brother. My sister has been with me a couple of times before, but not my brother. I take pictures of EVERYTHING including food to post on these boards. When I did this on a previous trip with my sister, it kinda weirded her out. What is the best way to prep them for the upcoming trip so that they don't think I have completely lost it?

Warn them ahead of time that you plan to document the trip with pictures of absolutely everything, including food and drink.

Tell them its not very unusual for folks to do this. Keep an eye out for anyone doing the same thing and point it out to them.

Show them pics of other food porn. My DS said you guys are crazy taking pics of food then I sent him a link to the dis food porn site on facebook to show him all the pics and he has never made another comment. just a thought it worked for me.

What the others said, then snap the pictures as quickly as you can with as little fanfare as possible. I only took one picture of my cake, one single time, and my husband freaked out. He said, "OMG, OMG! What if someone sees you?"

I agree with this post. I think it might "soften the blow" if you show them the food porn first. This way when you pull out your camera it won't seem as odd to them.

I personally don't take pictures of my food and drinks, but I really appreciate all those of you out there that do.

If your traveling companions really don't like sitting with someone who takes photos of their food, then the only choices you have are to either offend them or don't take photos. Really, the best you can do is warn them ahead of time that you plan to do it at every meal and give them the opportunity to react then and not at the restaurant. If it's the flash that bothers them, you can agree to take pictures without the flash.

Pretend that you are Anton Ego from Ratatuille! On our last trip, I took a lot of food pics (see my review - link below).

When taking pictures at our table... at first, DW was a little annoyed but was fine with it. But when DW is hungry, look out! I had to be very quick with snapping pics of appetizers (especially crab cakes, her favorite)... DW was not going to wait for me! DS5 liked it -- and requested photos of his food, if I skipped a dish of his!

I wondered what people thought -- I tried to be non-intrusive about it. At buffets, I waited until there was no one at an area before snapping pics. The Chef came to our table at almost every meal... now that happened many times on past trips... but I wondered if it was becasue they thought I was doing a review for someone important (hey, we are important!)

My compromise with my husband for our upcoming trip is to use my cell phone camera. Quality won't be as good but I do have a 5MP camera on the phone so I won't complain

I am trying to figure out how to bring this up with DH. I may just not take food pics or may not have pics the first 3 days (when DH is there) but have them for the last two. I thought I may be able to sneak some especially if I get my son in the picture and then zoom in on the food once we get home and cut my family out to post on dis

I take food pics too. I just tell the family in advance and that's that. My kids get a kick out of it.

My husband does not much care for it and I do have to be fast otherwise he will have already eaten part of his meal or appetizer. (He's a very fast eater!)

I have never cared if anyone thinks it's wierd. I'd hope they would have better things to worry about.

I love taking pics of the food. It helps me scrapbook; when I see the meal, it brings back the whole day and I can journal in more detail.

DH always thought it was weird. He was convinced I was the only one who did it. I showed him threads and threads of food pics, and we picked restaurants based on what we saw. He still was convinced that only a few people really did it and it was odd.

Well, I got a new camera. It has all the normal settings - beach, fireworks, etc, but it also has...a FOOD SETTING!!! ROTFL!!

I am vindicated! No way would Nikon put a food setting on a camera unless LOTS of people like to take pics of their food.

I am very unobtrusive about it, I just take a quick pic right after the waiter leaves. No flash. No reason for any other diners to even notice what I'm doing, and certainly no reason for anyone to be offended.

Guess if your traveling companions seriously object, then the best you could do is take pictures of your own food and just mention what they chose to have & whether they liked it or not (if you're doing a review.) If they look around the restaurants, I think they'd notice lots & lots of people taking picutres of food, restaurant decor, characters, etc. It's Disney, people are on vacation...cameras are everywhere.

My adult kids go with us often, and they looked askance at the picture taking at first...until I explained the reason I knew what was good at different restaurants and what dishes to avoid was because I read hundreds of reviews every year on my favorite forum...and that wouldn't be possible if people didn't take pictures & write extensive reviews for me. So I return the favor! After the first couple of restaurants, they all actively participate: staging their plate, showing off the dessert, etc. As well as give opinions on their food for my reviews.

I got nothin'. I always thought it was weird to photograph a bag of grapes and someone will inevitably go 'OH MY WORD! THOSE LOOK MAGICAL'. /shrugs
