food in room will this work?

Just a note about bringing your own appliances - there have been many discussions on these boards about this NOT being allowed by the hotel because of the fire hazard.

Every place we have stayed over the years, we asked and were told it was not a problem...we do not want to have a problem with the fire code.(that is if we are staying somewhere that does not have a kitchen or kitchenette and we plan on cooking in the room.)

Sorry to be a downer on this, but if you really need to cook in the room, can you really afford the trip?
You can make healthy inexpensive snacks in the room sure, but you need to eat out or get takeaway for a main meal each day. PPs have given tips on lots of stuff you can do, but crock pots and grills are not something that should be used in a hotel room......I work in Health & Safety!!!

we have everything paid but food, we have one meal a day (besides thursday) in park or other places, and tickets are non nonrefundable. If i were gona move the trip back it would have been after cars opened but couldn't do that with out losing more.

The food is not a big thing i know many ppl have not been able to afford meals so did in room food.

any ways thanks again to all

umm just because someone doesnt or cant afford eating in the parks doesnt mean you shouldn't go. we never eat any meals in the parks. we drive, so we pack a big cooler and SOMETIMES eat subway or chinese. i don't know of any hotel that allows u to use cooking appliances that you bring from home. our favorite cheapie meal at disney is 1 can of chunky soup poured over microwaveable mashed taters. not 5 star but cheap healthy(?) and fast. don't know how far your driving but chicken cooked or not needs to be disposed of within 72 hours of thawing. carnation instant breakfast with skim milk and some fruit is a great vitamin filled snack. there are a few ok cheap restaurants on harbor and katella that aren't too bad. we usually stop at food for less on katella to stock up before going to hotel. They have a great 2lb dry salami that with some cheese & crackers and a cheap wine make you feel so continental lol. have a good time, keep the blood sugar up and you will be fine. MAGIC WISHES

yummy that sounded good. We buy the packages salami and stuff for home but trip could help too.

Today we got jerky sticks

and made Thursdays meal golden horseshoe

Would getting groceries delivered to the hotel be out of the question?? That way you needn't worry about chicken and such unthawing and going bad, or refilling the ice chest, etc.

im getting the food and drinks on the way there half will be used in the car. and its less then 50 so vons wouldn't be helpful this time.
I'm just trying to make it all and from what ive come up with with nixing the chicken and maybe salami works.

salami rules:dance3: also some refried beans and cheese heat up great in a microwave with chips or flour tortillas for burritos. frozen burritos work for us too but put them in a good ziplock to prevent leakage if they are going to be in cooler.
We are the disneyland microwave kings lol.
ramen and chilli and cheese
tuna a can of peas and mushroom soup over chicken raman
deli potato salad and hotdogs
yum yum cannot wait

thanks i think ive nixed the taco bell and mc ds lol golden horseshoe, and Dca (fries chilli chess dog, and moms Chinese give two meals we didn't have (and in budget)

with the salami, and trail mix c sticks and other things mentioned in this post we should be good to go with 40 left for playing with lol

TY all many of your tips and tricks are being used

Microwave popcorn-I usually purchase one of the refillable tubs at the park and then refill with the microwave popcorn.

I bring applesauce pouches, cereal bars, fruit bars and granola bars for snacking in the park.

Oatmeal is easy to make in the room-use the coffee maker to heat water. Just pack some bowls and spoons. You could use hot water to make cup of soups too.

We bring a small 8 x 8 " Foreman grill...

Bring a crock pot!

Check with your motel about these items. Many don't allow crock pots or any type of grill. I think it is fire hazard related. That and the smell from the Crock Pot takes over the entire floor, sometimes a couple of floors (through the venting systems). I know the family with the Crock Pot is glad to come back to their room and smell their food, but often, nobody else is as thrilled with it. ;)

I understand where you are coming from, with the possible fire hazzard, and smell..... I was just trying to discourage under cooked food in a microwave, or food poisoning from the chicken. Just kind of thru the idea out there...

Thanks! :thumbsup2

It seems to me that cooking in a motel room would be very dangerous.
I do admire the ingenious ideas all of you have come up with.
For me, my husband knows that when we are on vacation I will not prepare one iota of food nor will I make a bed or do any cleaning up. That's what I do all year (I am a homemaker) so when I am on vacation I do nothing.

I wouldnt leave a crockpot plugged in, or leave the room when a grill is still warm, but I don't think making a grilled cheese sandwich or heating up a waffle is that different than using a microwave. Or a hair dryer! I think if you don't leave an appliance plugged in, or leave when it is warm, you are pretty safe. We don't do a lot of cooking, but with a child with food allegies, sometimes it is much easier for them to eat food that you bring that you know is safe, rather than risking problems eating out for all your meals. I would not use a crock pot, though...I agree with that!

we make all our hotel room food in the provided microwave

I would do in room breakfasts and maybe sandwiches for lunch.

OT, but I hate that the first compromise of a budget on vacation is food. How is that a vacation for the wife/mother? All the planning, shopping, prep work, preparing, and clean up do not make for a relaxing vacation. I would take something else out of the budget before I would be going back to a hotel room to make a meal.

i have 6 bags of pop corn planing on bringing it with us (might get one the buckets in the park not sure yet tho)

one trip we did take our own food and ate in our room. All dinner meals were eaten in the room as well as breakfast, we ate lunch in the parks. We took snacks as well and we always take in our own water bottles. :) For meals I took the big bowls of instant soups, we paired that with chips/crackers/cheese/fruit, I took the instant mac & cheese bowls, hot dogs, I even took premade (from Trader Joe's) enchiladas for DBF and I for one meal. It was very doable, we didn't have any outside appliances, we just used the toaster and microwave in the room. I didn't take anything that had to be frozen (ie chicken nuggets) because I didn't want to take the chance it wouldn't be cold enough. We also took lunch meat and did sandwiches with chips/crackers one night. It was fine, the kids loved it and we saved a lot of money doing it that way.

Not sure if this helps but Mimi's near Hojo has family meals for $25 for take-out. Our family is planning to do this most nights as $25 for 5 people is very reasonable (we will supplement with an additional salad) and then we're planning on a nice ice-cream treat for dessert.
