I'm trying to save a little money, but I'm unsure if I can do this. I knew all of you experienced travelers could help me! Our flight is during lunch. I know that I could buy lunch after the secruity check point, but I was wondering if I could pack sandwiches, chips, etc. I know that we can't bring drinks past security but can I bring a sippy of apple juice for my 1 year old? Thanks.

I don't think you can bring apple juice through security. I believe liquids are limited to formula and medications. You probably can purchase some juice in the food court on your concourse after passing through security, and, of course, bring an empty sippy cup for your little one to use.

And be careful if packing peanut butter sandwiches as your primary food. Occasionally, flights are declared "peanut free" due to someone with a severe allergy on board. That includes peanut butter.

No liquids. Dh's half bottle of soda was taken @ Orlando international (I forgot it was in the bag!). All of our snacks that we bought with our snack credits made it through just fine :)

This is an important point. Although no one will stop you from eating something with Peanut Butter (the flight attendants may say something like please refrain, but they won't stop anyone), it is often better to err on the side of caution.

Packing food is fine - it's the liquids that are a security issue. You will not be able to bring the sippy cup with any liquid in it through security, unfortunately. They will confiscate it & toss the whole cup - they won't even allow you to pour out the liquid & save your cup. When you go through security next time look at the HUGE bin of drinks they have there that they confiscated!

I often travel with an insulated Thermos bag as my carryon.....it's a pretty big bag......I think 16 x 10 x 9......with items such as hard cheese, crackers, some fruit, english muffins, bagels, travel size packets of peanut butter and jelly. I've even travelled with containers of frozen meatballs, frozen precooked boneless chicken, and frozen precooked crumbled ground beef in my bag. Since we're DVC members we do quite a bit of cooking in our kitchen during our vacation.....we usually eat in maybe 3 nights of the 6 or 7 we're at WDW. So I prepare and freeze what I can at home to cut down on prep time once I'm there. I always use Garden Grocer to order all of the fresh items we need for meals for the week, but, I'm really picky about meat quality so prefer to precook and freeze what I can. We only have a two hour flight, plus our drive to the airport so, I need to keep everything frozen for about six to seven hours max. The Thermos bag I have keeps items frozen for 24 hours. I've been doing this several times a year for about 7 or 8 years now and have yet to have anything not still frozen when I arrive. I am very careful not to pack anything that could BECOME liquid.......for instance... homemade spaghetti sauce......I take my homemade meatballs, but, we make do with jar sauce for any pasta dishes. It's worked very well for us and I've only been stopped once and my bag opened by TSA. I had something frozen packaged in a freezer container and then wrapped in foil......it was too dense and they wanted to see what it was.

we always bring PB and J every flight and some pretzels..never any problems. We just buy a bottle of water before we get on the plane.

OP- I actually think you CAN bring Apple Juice for your 1 year old. Here's what TSA says...

"TSA is also modifying the rules associated with carrying breast milk through security checkpoints. Mothers flying with, and now without, their child will be permitted to bring breast milk in quantities greater than three ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint.

Breast milk is in the same category as liquid medications.

When carrying formula, breast milk, or juice through the checkpoint, they will be inspected, however, you or your infant or toddler will not be asked to test or taste breast milk, formula, or juice. Our Security Officers may test liquid exemptions (exempt items more than 3 ounces) for explosives.

When traveling with your infant or toddler, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3 ounces of baby formula, breast milk, or juice are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of your itinerary, if you perform the following:

1.Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
2.Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3.Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.
You are encouraged to travel with only as much formula, breast milk, or juice in your carry-on needed to reach your destination.

You are allowed to bring gel or liquid-filled teethers, canned, jarred, or processed baby food in your carry-on baggage and aboard your plane.

For information on creams, medicines, or other essential items for your child, please read our guidance on these items. Click here for the list of permitted and prohibited items.

Liquids and gels, including baby formula, breast milk, or juice, may be packed in your luggage and checked with your airline.

After clearing security, travelers can now bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area on-board aircraft.

For more details on navigating the screening process with your children, please read our information on traveling with children."

...so that makes me think that as along as you declare what it is, you should be ok???

As far as food- I have never had a problem. I bring dry food, no liquids (like salsa or jelly) unless they can fit into my plastic baggie and have never ever ever ever been questioned. I've even had protein powder that looks like :rolleyes1 and green drink powder that looks like :rolleyes1- no problem at all!! Bring it on the plane!! (or eat it while you're waiting for the plane if you have PB and are worried that the airline will make you throw it out)

Airlines usually have apple juice as part of their free beverage service. If your child can wait until drinks are served during the flight, just take the empty sippy cup and order apple juice from the flight attendent. If your child needs juice sooner, you can buy something after the security checkpoint that's o.k. to take onboard. It won't be cheap. Otherwise, fill the sippy cup with some water from the drinking fountain after you go through security.

About the peanut butter sandwich; my parents recently flew on AA and there was announcement after they boarded that one of the flight attendents had a peanut allergy, therefore consumption of peanut products was forbidden due to the safety risk. We've had announcements that a passenger onboard has an allergy and people should be careful consuming peanut products, but never an outright ban. Unfortunately, airlines like to wait until everyone is seated to make these type of announcements, so it's probably best to pack some peanut-free snacks just in case.

frozen green grapes work well if you need to keep anything cool

I have taken apple juice thru in a sippy type cup for my son this past December. They just took it and tested some before they let me thru. It was really quick...had it back by the time I put my shoes back on.
