When we go on vacation we like to set up a rough budget to follow for our various expenses. When we go to Disney we normally budget about $100 a day for food and usually do pretty well staying within range. I have a feeling that $100 a day for a family of three will not be reasonable for a trip to London, any suggestions on a daily budget amount for food?

I think you should decide how and where you are going to eat first.

Will breakfast be included in your room rate?
Will you just want a snack or McD type meal at lunch?
Are you planning to eat at some posh restaurants for dinner?

I think London is similar to Orlando - there are good value places to eat and sone very expensive places.

Have a look at some London websites like the ones below and decide what type of meals you are going for, then you should be able to work out a budget:

Thanks for the information.

We will be staying at the County Hall Travel Inn and breakfast isn't included. However, I have been told that there is a coffee shop right across the street from the Marriot that has good bagels and coffee, so for us that would suffice for breakfast. We would probably only do one big meal a day, but with a seven year old we won't be going anywhere posh. Lunch for us would hopefully be a sandwich or fish and chips or something of the sort. I am sure we will hit either Rainforest Cafe or the Hard Rock Cafe once, but otherwise just regular food.

Would it benefit us to eat our big meal in the middle of the day? Do Londoners tend to eat later? We typically like breakfast at 8:30, lunch at noon and dinner around 5:30/6:00.

I followed the links, but I still wasn't able to get a good feel for how much we need to budget. But the links were nice to see, thanks.

Hi again Debbi!

I agree with Tim that there are some cheap and some VERY expensive places to eat.

London mid-week is mainly full of office workers so there are hundreds of sandwich bars and coffee shops everywhere.

Typical dinner time is around 8pm - this gives people time to go home, change and eat before a show or other evening entertainment.

5:00- 6.30 should be fine - you may be able to pick up discounted "early bird" menus at that time in certain chains.
