Food and renting a home in DW

Need feedback from you all My immediate and extended family is going to FLA in June how do you all get food down there. We are flying not driving. Do you have it sent down there or buy the food when you get there. We should be there around 6pm so it will be pizza friday night but after that then what?

We go shopping at Publix on US-192 or Super Wal-Mart on 27 and 192. Lately, we've been pre-ordering groceries though from http://www.gardengrocer.com for delivery, it's free and painless, and saves us a few hours of shopping when we first arrive!

For pizza we love to order from Giordano's on US-192 which delivers to Windsor Hills (where our home there is located). Not sure where you're staying, so not sure if garden grocer delivers to you or not...but I would just plan on picking up things like coffee, essentials at a grocery store when you arrive for the next morning, and schedule your grocery delivery for the next morning so you don't have to spend your trip shopping at all!

I must agree the garden grocer is a nice option! We were there for a delivery for our guests that were following us and all we did was open the door they brought it in and unpacked it all and then left. It is something we will be doing for ourselves!

We always have a car and go grocery shopping when we get there. I like to have plenty of drinks and snacks at the house so we can take them to the parks. I like to go to the home we have rented first so that we can see what we need. Some owners provide dish soap or laundry soap to get you started and other don't. I do pack a zip lock bag with dryer sheets and I also pack coffee filters in my luggage. Both are small and save me from buying a whole bunch only to use a few while I am there. If you are on 192, there are Publix grocery stores and other smaller grocers along the way. There are Wal Marts on both of the far ends of 192 too.

We shop at the Publix on 192 (but NOT on a Saturday -- all the Ornage Lakes folks checking in and getting their supplies for the week). We avoid the Winn Dixie at Formosa Gardens Blvd. We have used wegoshop.com (in 2004) but while the service was fine, I found that I did not like others shopping for me.

I enjoy the Publix on 192 the people in there are so nice! They have a great selection and good prices. I think I like it better than the supper walmart!
I havent been there on a saturday before.... but I know I spent a good hour or two in there shopping just going up and down the isles and having a good time!

Were abouts is the home you are renting? I think that makes a difference where you will be shopping.

We have a home located west off of 192. So for us I like the Publix of Orange lakes.

Many of our guests have used the Market Place in the Formosa Gardens Shopping Area. They find it closer and not so intimidating for them to venture out. Might just be easier for your group if you are staying in the area.

There ae a couple of choices for pizza also Giordanos or we also enjoy Flippers in Old town. They both deliver and both are good. We tend to over buy at Giordanos and it starts out very expensive but we also have a couple more meals the remainder of the week. I think owning has let us wonder where if I were to rent I would want the closest so as not to get confused. I have family with some pretty bad senses of direction to say the least. Heading to Sea World and ending up in Tampa? Yeah so I give them very little outside of the house. Lost in EI that was my uncle who has had a time share in both Orbits and now summer bay. They are a scary bunch. Any way back to the ?

If the home you are renting is in the Poinciana area there is a superwal-mart very near by and not sure what else to be quite honest. Not an area we travel in very much other then Sams club and Home Depot.

On 27 to the North is Super wal-mart to the south is a Publix in Berry town center. Again not so familiar with the area. We pick our own fruit on 27 north a little further up from the wal-mart. They have great fresh oj and I make a mean margarita with the fresh limes and unripe lemons. If that is any good to you?

We always go to Publix & Walmart too. I just wanted to say if you have a GPS bring it for your rental car. We drove down last year so we had it with us & it was great! I don't like driving in an area that I don't know by myself & the GPS was perfect I had no trouble finding the stores at all. I could shop in peace without the kids & my DH. HTH

We'll just go to Wal-Mart on our first evening - I have a few things on my list that aren't food related (no Wal-Marts, targets or anything like that where I live!). Then when we get a chance I think we'll venture to one of the natural food markets. There's a Publix just up the road from where we'll be (Cypress Pointe), and I have coupons for it, so we'll go there in between as well.

If your staying in the 192 Formossa garden area here is a list of restaurants and stores and banks in the area. I have a Garmin and we take it every time we go! I got tired of getting lost!
Another option too is to see if the homeowners Management Company offers Welcome Packs, ours does and it includes some things like 1 bottle of soda, water, milk, eggs, baccon, donuts, Juice, bag of chips. Some starter things like that so your not walking into an empty home or forced to stop at the store on your way there.

Don't forget you are on vacation too. Everytime we have bought food and ended up throwing it out. My understanding is you are staying on site. I wouldn't worry about the shopping thing. If you are going to have transportation to and from the airport such as Tiffany town cars they make grocery stops on the way to the hotel. Sometimes I think people put too much emphasis on having food at your every reach. You are soooooo busy you forget about eating. Especially if it hot no one wants to eat and no one wants to carry it. Plus you always end up bringing left over food back to the room from the parks. The other thing we found with the kids when you are buying a snack in the parks let one pick one time and the other pick the other time that way the ice creams do not melt that quickly and the snacks get finished and not thrown away.

Have a great time and don't worry about the food issue it always works out.

We're getting ready for our first stay at Windsor Hills and will be needing groceries. Is garden grocer a lot more expensive that the stores? I browsed the site a little bit but can't tell if those are 'regular' Florida grocery costs or if you're paying extra for the convenience.

It's the same price, if you charge over $100 (I think) then delivery is free too!

The food, and especially the meats, fruit & vegetables are of extremely high quality actually.

It's true that we always throw stuff out (hard to use a ketchup bottle in a week!) but we really enjoy cooking on vacation. I work full time and it is a treat to be able to cook something nice for breakfast or dinner without rushing around.

And we have never taken food home from a park restaurant. I can't imagine walking around the park, or even just negotiating the park exit, trams, and car, with piles of half eaten food!

I guess you could UPS or FedEx a box of food to the home you're staying in...but why? Then you're going to have to be there for delivery / arrival... and pay shipping charges... I would think you would have to overnight or 2-day deliver food so you know specifically what day they will be there....and then you don't know what time exactly. At that rate..it's most likely less expensive and easier to just have it delivered (they give you 30 min guaranteed time slot delivery windows), or just go shop for it yourself!

You could only ship non-perishable items anyhow... I guess you could try and make arrangements with the owner or MC to take delivery for you in advance, but most wouldn't want to do this, in our experience at least!

Personally going through the grocery store with a list will be your best bet.

We are down for longer periods of time like 10-17 days so we have plenty of time to use things up.
