It All Started With... Some Introductions

Hi there and welcome to my pre-trip report portion for my fantabulous October 2016 Disney World trip!

:welcome:

I like to do combo pre-trip/trip report posts to keep everything in one easy place so my title is really just something off the top of my head and has nothing to do with an event that occurred while I was there but rather about the anticipation of what I expect from my trip – if that makes sense.

I’ll start with the cast of characters for our trip.

Who?? R U?

My name is Mindy. I’m 29 and I work as a tax analyst here in Milwaukee, WI. I absolutely love Disney things… and cats! Basically I love all animals really, I even think a cockroach can be cute. lol!! Some of my favorite Disney things are…

WDW Park? Hollywood Studios
WDW Breakfast? Kona Café – Macadamia Nut Pancakes
WDW Dinner? Sci Fi Dine In – It has nothing to do with the food, but the fun times I have with my husband here.
WDW Snacks? It was the jalapeño cream pretzel… but alas, those are no longer.
WDW Rides? Tower of Terror, Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain
Princess? Merida
Character? Stitch, Marie, and Chip and Dale
What I’m Most Looking Forward To This Trip? Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

My husband’s name is Mike. He’s also 29. We’ve been together since sophomore year of high school when we were 15. He does something with sales… it keeps changing as they keep giving him new and more difficult projects so basically it’s impossible to explain. Assume he’s like Chandler from Friends but without an office. He’s also a big animal lover but I think he crosses the line at insects. lol! Some of his favorite Disney things are…

WDW Park? Magic Kingdom
WDW Breakfast? Kona Cafe
WDW Dinner? California Grill
WDW Snacks? Citrus Swirl
WDW Rides? Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain
Princess to meet? Merida
Character? Tinkerbell
What He's Most Looking Forward To This Trip? Meeting Jack & Sally, MNSSHP, and the Halloween decorations

For those of you who haven’t followed along with any of my previous reports, I just want to let you know that I really lay it all out there for you with what I’m dealing with in life. I keep most to Disney related items, but I lost my dad to suicide at the end of October 2015 which has had a huge impact on me and the way I go through my days. Some days, I may post something very intense and I’m assuming my trip will be a rough one for me. So I’m going to get to the…

Why?? part of my pre-trip report for you right now!

On October 27th, 2015 I received the worst phone call from my brother. He had found my dad in our family home after a concerned friend had messaged him over Facebook. I was at work. Everything was awful. I won’t get into more detail than that here… but the more I’ve talked and been honest about all of this, the better I’ve become with coping. If I’m going to get into anything intense in my reports, I will post a trigger warning as I don’t want to set anyone off spiraling on their lunch break as they read what they thought was a happy Disney filled report.

So because the anniversary of the worst week of my life is coming up at the end of October, I’ve decided to make it something FUN to countdown to. My husband and I had snuck off to Disney World over Thanksgiving of 2015 for a quick escape to help my mind snap back into place. We had already had a Disneyland trip planned for February/March 2016 and that was an absolute blast. We were discussing starting a family and everything after that point, but I’m just not in the right place mentally for that yet – so we booked a trip over Memorial Day weekend where we upgraded to Annual Passholders!! So, with “free” tickets in our pockets, it only made financial sense to book a trip for that week of October. Right?? I think that’s only Disney Addict logic speaking.

We also really love Halloween. A lot! It’s something I’ve always counted down to beginning in August and I love everything that goes along with it (minus gore… why so much gore now-a-days??). I love corn mazes. I love leaves crunching under my feet and the color changes. I love the smell that’s just in the air. I love the foods that go along with Fall. I love pumpkins and pumpkin carving as long as my wrists can handle it. We actually used to create a miniature haunted house at my parents’ house for a few years in a row. One year, our best year, we did a circus.

I think I’ll leave more of my Halloween/Fall love for another post for my pre-trip report. I know that we’re planning on doing a corn maze again here so I’ll make sure to take pictures and talk all about my insane infatuation and what our plans are for celebrating in Disney!

Next up… Where??

We weren’t exactly sure where to stay this trip so initially we had Coronado Springs booked for most of the stay, but we couldn’t get the full week so it was split with the Grand Floridian. We have never stayed at either of those, but once discounts were announced, we decided to switch to a different deluxe for the full week – Old Key West!

I’ve never stayed here but I’ve been twice to go have breakfast at Olivia’s. I’m obsessed with their breakfast potatoes!!

Sombrero Omelet with Magical Potatoes

I cannot wait to eat here again and I’ve always thought the grounds were nice… but really I haven’t gone much further than to grab food and go on the ferry. I know the resort is large, but I’m not too worried about it since it’s just Mike and I. I’m still trying to figure out what I can suggest for my online check in, just another part of the research I still need to do!

How?? are we getting there you ask?

Well, I hate flying. So we’ll be driving down from a bit north of Milwaukee, WI. Mike hopes to do it all in one day. We usually are able to get all the way into Florida within one day of driving, but I plan on giving us enough cushion if we end up having to do a little driving on our first official Disney day.

When?

I kind of already covered that but officially… our Disney dates are Sunday, October 23rd to Saturday, October 29th. We plan to hit the road very early on Saturday, October 22nd.

I suppose that’s it for now!! So for your safety, remain seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the train—and be sure to watch your kids. If any of you folks are wearin’ hats or glasses, best remove ’em—’cause this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Trick of "Eats"

One of the very important things that needed to be done 180 days in advance were our dining reservations. Of course these have changed just a few times already, but I feel pretty set on my decisions and confident enough to post them on my PTR.

I guess I should let everyone know that my husband and I are both vegetarian. There was a while where he'd still eat fish, but he's seemed to cut that out of his diet now and is also full veggie with me. I also have a lactose intolerance, so I don't go for a lot of dairy filled product on vacation - but I may indulge some as I finally have a medication that helps. So other than not eating meat, I'd say I'm not really a picky eater - but I guess that's kind of lying by default. But I will say that there isn't a fruit, veggie, fake meat or cheese I wouldn't try out there. My husband on the other hand really does not like watermelon or onions, so those usually are hard stops for him unless the onions are cooked in just a specific way.

So without further ado, below are our ADRs. I will mark anything new to us with a *.

Sunday, October 23rd
Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant (Dinner)

Monday, October 24th
Olivia's Cafe (Breakfast)
La Hacienda de San Angel (Dinner)*

Tuesday, October 25th
The Crystal Palace (Breakfast)*
Be Our Guest Restaurant (Lunch)*

Wednesday, October 26th
Captain's Grille (Breakfast)
Narcoossee's (Dinner)*

Thursday, October 27th
Olivia's Cafe (Breakfast)
Garden View Tea Room*

Friday, October 28th
Olivia's Cafe (Breakfast)
Hoop De Doo Revue (Dinner)

Saturday, October 29th
Kona Cafe (Breakfast)

Clearly we have a few Olivia's booked. My husband is hoping I get over the breakfast potatoes on this trip. He's not sure why I love the place so much. The two times we've gone so far, something was always wrong and service was slow but I find the place absolutely charming.

I also don't care too much for the food at Sci Fi, but Mike and I just really love the atmosphere here and the deep fried pickles aren't awful. We've always had fun service here and we didn't want to miss out on going again this trip. I'm a little concerned as I have it booked for 7:05, but the park closes at 7:00 that night. Fantasmic doesn't show until 7:30 so I'm assuming they expect people to still be in the park? Very odd... but I plan on checking in before 7 anyways to make sure we get in.

Mike is really excited about the tea at the Grand. I told him there's an option for a cheese plate and he was sold in an instant. We're from Wisconsin so we have high standards of cheese so we'll see if this stacks up! So far, his favorite cheese plate was the one at California Grill.

This will also be our second time doing HDDR. I wasn't nervous about booking this one at all. I feel like vegetarians wouldn't normally book here because it seems there wouldn't be enough to eat, but I spoke with the chef the first time I went here and was given veggie beans and a huge platter of grilled veggies. It was fantastic and the show is so fun so we're really looking forward to going back.

As far as Be Our Guest goes, I marked it as new as I've only been once for dinner. I'm really excited to try the Master's Cupcake at lunch since the brownie at dinner was definitely too crispy for my liking.

The only reservation I'm on the fence about keeping is La Hacienda. I don't know if it will work with other things that I have booked for that day for F&W and I may not want to wait until our ADR time to eat... I'll get more into that in another post, but I think that's the only one that may be on the chopping block.

Well, that's all for now! Have a magical day! pixiedust:

following! I love reading PTRs for the same time as I'll be there. We'll be there the same week - yay! :)

Welcome, absolutmey!! I'm so glad you joined in. :) I'll have to check out your report as well. It's so fun to relive some memories and see what others have done when you have gone! I love your ticker btw!

Edit - I thought your October 2016 was a link! lol Seems it's not but either way I'm excited to hear your own experiences on what you've done through my report!

So literally hours after posting that I wasn't going to change my dining reservations, I have. I had posted on a vegan/vegetarian Disney foodie group asking about La Hacienda's options. From what I gather, there seems to be a lot of back and forth about whether the rice and beans are vegetarian or use chicken stock. To be safe, I've just changed the reservation entirely to Coral Reef. I have yet to go here and I've always wanted to. It looks like there's a great vegetarian option on this menu that uses faux chicken breast. I'm excited to try it! And I've also moved back our reservation so there shouldn't be any issue with getting there in time after other plans for that day.

It's a link. I may have been editing it a few minutes ago when you clicked though. Does that matter, I wonder? :)

Yay I'm glad you've started a PTR!

My October trip to Disney was one of my favorites. You are going to love that time of year and MNSSHP!

That's awesome that you will be staying at Old Key West!

Your ADRs sound great! I think you will love the Master's Cupcake at BOG...so much better than the stuff at dinner! And I love Crystal Palace breakfast! I look forward to hearing about Coral Reef, it's always been on my "hope to try someday" list.

I'm so glad you found my next report! :)

I am SO excited to see all the Halloween stuff in Disney. Ad MNSSHP is going to be SO fun! I've been looking to see what treats and characters and things have been there in previous years and I can't wait to try to do it all!

I told Mike that I switched our ADR to Coral Reef and he was like "What? What restaurant?" and so I explained to him it was the one from the Full House episode and he was shocked that we haven't gone there yet. lol I really can't wait to see it!

Wacky Wednesday Change of Plans

So initially for this trip we had invited my brother to join us. He had said he wasn't interested in going somewhere he had already gone. Well! Change of plans. He wants to go to Halloween Horror Nights this year. We were going to plan to go to this on Wednesday, October 26th which changed into our "down day"... so now it's back to HHN!

My brother is hoping to fly out on Tuesday night and leave Thursday morning. We're going to spend the morning and afternoon at IOA and US checking out the new King Kong ride and experiencing Harry Potter. Mike and I have done HP before in both parks, but my brother has never been to the Universal Studios portion - Diagon Allen or any part of US actually. So he's really excited.

I'm just excited because I totally love HP and I'm just about done with the new book so I've been dying to go back! I love the butterbeer and the ambiance. The only problem is that I can only do so many 3D rides and Universal is full of those kinda rides so I may have to sit out while the ride some things. I'm fine with that because that just means more time for pictures and enjoying the scenery!!

Soooo needless to say I've had to cancel Narcoossee's and I've also canceled Captain's Grille. Universal Studios opens up at 8 AM so we'll be there by 7:30 to get in and head to Diagon Alley and then hop on the train over to check out King Kong in IOA. I think it'll be worth it. It was hard to swallow the price, but I figured I'm cutting out a signature restaurant and shopping in Disney Springs that day so it about evens out. We also purchased the Express Pass for Horror Nights. I want to make sure we get into all the houses as fast as possible. ;)

Alright, that's all for now!! I'll have to outline more of our schedule for you guys in the next post.

That sounds like a positive change in plans! You will get to spend some time with your brother and get a day at Universal! Very cool!

I think it'll be really great! Silly that he wants to get away just for a few days in the middle of the week but it'll work out just fine! I'm actually going to prep a bit by watching Krampus and Halloween (2007) tonight!

Looking forward to another great trip report from you!!! I will be following as well! We always stay at the cabins at FW and eat at Trail's End but we have never done HDDR! I am thinking we need to go on our next trip!!

Yay! So glad you found me too. :) I really loved HDDR the first time we went. I can't wait to go a second time. You should definitely go!!

Hello from next door in Minnesota, looking forward to your report, we'll be in Disney a couple weeks before you, excited to see how your trip goes!

Halloween Horror Nights Personal Updates

I know this isn't really Disney related much at all, but it has to be part of my pre-trip report since it is part of our trip, right??

On Friday night, my brother Erik came over and I helped him buy his Universal tickets and his plane tickets so he is officially coming on part of this trip with us. He will be arriving Tuesday night pretty late. We will most likely still be at the Halloween Party when he arrives so I need to get him a magic band to access our room and I'll probably need to get a map for him or make some videos on how to walk around our resort so he doesn't get lost... lol. He leaves Wednesday morning... I believe his flight is at 11 AM. He's not doing anything Disney related other than staying at our resort and maybe going to the Gurgling Suitcase on his arrival night.

I'm really glad he's able to come. I'm hoping it's good for him as it will be the anniversary of when he found my dad so it's going to be a rough few days for all of us. So why not celebrate with my dad's favorite holiday? :)

Anyways - Friday night after the purchases were made, we watched Krampus and Halloween 2. Both new movies to us. So far the movie/TV based houses announced are Krampus, Halloween 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and The Walking Dead. I have seen Krampus, Halloween 2, The Exorcist, and the first two-ish seasons of The Walking Dead. My husband watches the show though and has kept me pretty up to date with the happenings but it got too gorey and intestiney and boring for me to keep watching.

SO - so far I'm really most excited for The Exorcist and Krampus. I LOVED KRAMPUS. I love scary movies like this. It was campy and ridiculous and I really love Christmas so all of it combined was just fantastic. That is the house I'm most looking forward to of the bunch.

I hope to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre before we go, but I've rented it twice so far and still haven't watched it because I'm nervous about it.

The plan is for us to write out lists of our must do houses and see where they correlate and make a plan of action based off of that. I think my list as it stands right now is this:

1. Krampus
2. The Exorcist
3. The tomb one that is rumored and is not based off of anything
4. Chance - Even though I'm horrified of clowns
5. Halloween 2
6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
7. The Walking Dead

I put Walking Dead so low because it's zombies. I just don't care. :)

Well, that's all for now! Thanks for following along and I hope you all have a great week!

Sounds like you are ready for HHN! It's really great that you and your bro will be together during this time and to celebrate your dad's favorite holiday

Plan of Attack – Part 1 10/22/16 through 10/25/16

Next Wednesday, we get to pick our Fastpasses at 6 AM CT! I figured I should post what our current schedule looks like today so you guys can kind of see where I’m at and where I can fit in rides or attractions next week. Sorry the text heavy update! And it's currently only part of the week. I'm pretty busy at work but I wanted to start laying this out so I can think about times.

Saturday – October 22nd

We’ll be hitting the road this morning by 3 AM CT. Mike’s plan is to make it all the way down to Disney World in one day. We’re driving from just north of Milwaukee, WI so Google Maps puts that drive at 18 hours and 38 minutes if we go stay at an All Star resort that Saturday to Sunday morning. The plan is going to see where we end up that night and I’ll make a reservation or call around 10 PM ET. Hopefully there is some availability but we’re just going to wing it like the first time we drove down.

Sunday – October 23rd, Hollywood Studios

We’ll either already be on Disney property or close to it with our plans. I think we’ll probably “sleep in” til around 8 or 9 AM and then get moving. The plan for this day is to first, check in to Old Key West. I know we’ll be starving at that point since we’re only planning on packing sandwiches and snacks for the way down on Saturday. We’ll need a real and hot meal!

I’m not sure where we’ll be eating?? It really depends on the timing. It’s possible we’ll just go in to Olivia’s and either have breakfast/lunch depending on how the drive is.

After we eat, we are headed to Hollywood Studios for the day. The only thing planned so far for this day with a set time is dinner at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater. The park is set to close at 7, so we’ll be checking in just a bit before that. Fantastmic isn’t until 7:30 that night so I believe that’s why they were still taking reservations after 7. After dinner, we plan to leisurely walk out of the park and maybe head to the Gurgling Suitcase for some drinks before bed.

7:05 PM Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Dinner

Monday – October 24th, EPCOT

On Monday we have a HUGE scheduled itinerary already. It’s really not like me, but there were a lot of Food and Wine things that interested me on this day. We’re signed up for the vegetarian and pastry culinary demonstrations and the Mix It, Make It, Celebrate It! demonstration as well. So essentially, we’re in the Festival Center from at least 11:30 until 5:30.

I think the plan is going to be to make the most of Future World on this day since we’ll be by the Festival Center and our dining reservation at night is at Coral Reef. That way on our second EPCOT day, we can really focus on World Showcase. I’m a little nervous about eating enough since we’ll be at the FC, but I believe they do have some food in there – not a lot… but some! And we do get to taste test some of the demonstration foods. I’ll need to get a snack or something around 10:30 before we head in for the day though. Maybe I’ll finally try Sunshine Seasons!

7:45 AM Olivia’s Café Breakfast
12:00 PM Jason Stefanko, Gardein, Venice CA – Vegetarian Demonstration
2:00 PM Warren Brown, CakeLove, Alexandria, VA – Pastry Demonstration
4:00 PM Pumpkin Decorating – Scott Norman, Picasso of Pumpkins, Galva, IL
8:10 PM Coral Reef Restaurant Dinner

Tuesday, October 25th – Magic Kingdom

We have a pre-park opening breakfast on our first Magic Kingdom day at Crystal Palace. We have never eaten here and I’m really excited to check out the architecture and the Pooh’s Stuffed Toast! We also scored a late Be Our Guest lunch on this day. We’ve dined here once before for dinner so I’m excited to try the Master’s Cupcake. I really didn’t enjoy the grey stuff brownie they have at dinner, it was far too hard… almost like a biscotti piece. This night is also our first Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! Mike’s main goal for this night is to meet Jack and Sally so we will be heading over there early to get in line. My goal is to see the parade, fireworks, and the stage show. I’d like to squeeze in characters too around that time, but we may save that all for the second night.

This is also the night by brother will be flying in. I think he should be arriving at Old Key West around 10:30 PM. He knows we won’t be “home” til late though so he’s probably going to go looking for food and maybe a drink or just go to bed early.

8:35 AM A Buffet with Character Breakfast at The Crystal Palace
2:20 PM Be Our Guest Lunch
6:00 PM Line up for Jack and Sally
7:00 PM MNSSHP Begins

That's all for now!! I will post the other half later in the week. :)
