Third year in a row we have taken DD7 with her food allergies (milk, eggs and chocolate...yeah that one really stinks) I always mark it when we make the ADR's and tell the hostess/host when we arrive. Then I discuss with the chef.

Has anyone actually contacted the allergy office ahead of time? It said I could call a few weeks before. Is that necessary? I've just never done it and was wondering what to expect. I've never had an issue not doing it.

Thanks!

I have not but I am interested to hear if anyone has done this. We have a peanut allergy kid.

I did for our first trip last year and they sent me a ton of info on products sold in the parks and what allergens are in them. It was pretty helpful, I will do the same when we go again. I guess not necessary, but nice to have. I'd do it close to when you are going, though, b/c things can change. The chefs in Disney were awesome dealing with food allergies-can't wait to go back!

Special Diets used to have you fill out a form and email it back to them. Now, it seems like they only do that if you are allergic to things not on their list of common allergies or if you have multiple allergies.

My DD is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, but she is also allergic to peas. Since peas was not on their common allergens list, I emailed them and they emailed me back with forms to fill out and return to them.

I'm not sure if it was necessary since the chef came out to speak with us at every restaurant, but I felt better knowing that they had her allergy info in advance.

Hi,

I would love to hear more details about your trip and how it went when you get back. My DD#1 will be 5 when we go and she is allergic to Milk, Chocolate, oranges, strawberries and shellfish - so I would love to hear how the milk and chocolate issues went for you.

I just contacted the allergy department last week. They will give you a general response with an outdated list of foods/ingredients. They will ask that if you have a diner with 4 or more food allergies, or an allergy that is not a part of the "Top 8," fill out a form and send it back to them. I did it for DS (anaphylaxis to milk, soy, egg, peanuts, tree nuts). Got another response from the allergy department saying they will attach the info to our ADR's, but to contact the chef upon arrival.

I will say for the egg allergy, from reports on the disability board, it seems they no longer serve a bun/bread that is egg-free. They are now using Udi's which will not be safe (unless your DD can have baked egg) for her. I am actually very disappointed in this. I think the previous was tapioca based and was Top 8 free.

I honestly don't think contacting them will make any difference. If you read the disability thread about the allergy changes, until you go to that restaurant, you won't be able to get any information of what is really safe. They don't have their allergy menus updated yet. For our trip in 09, I just added the allergies to our reservation, reminded them when we checked in, and the chef always came out. Other than than the chef at the CP wanting DS to eat the food off the buffet, which he cannot do due to horrible cross contamination issues, we had no issues with just contacting the chefs.

ETA: The info sheet the allergy department will send you now is dated June 2011. They started making changes in the late fall, so their products are different now. You may want to contact them to ask for that info, but it isn't current.
