Hi everybody! We're trying a low FODMAP diet with DH- has anyone gone to the world with an onion or garlic allergy? He seems to react to onion and onion powder in a major way (amongst a few other random foods like peaches, but I'm not as worried about that since they're easier to avoid). We have gone gluten and soy free before (and will be going gluten and soy free in September), so we're used to the whole "talk to the chef" thing, but we haven't gone onion or garlic free before. Any advice on this? Any places that we should think about eating that might be accommodating to this type of allergy?

I haven't gone onion and garlic free but I have gone ginger and thyme free last December. I am also gluten free and soy free as well as long as like a dozen other things. They were very accommodating with it. Now, I will say, for me, ginger is a true allergy (itching, hives, breathing problems) so I avoid it all together but thyme is more of a sensitivity where if I eat too much I will start to show symptoms but I can still eat it occasionally. For example, the allergy chicken tenders...I didn't check whether or not the coating has thyme in it or not but I just made sure that everything else I ate did not have thyme in it just in case.

I am also allergic to broccoli and all other raw vegetables and all raw fruits except grapes and they were very accommodating about that as well.

But ginger, honey, and thyme were definitely concerns for me during the last trip but the chefs were wonderful about it.

DH and I are going to the world in 11 days. It is my first trip since going wheat, soy and dairy free as well as low FODMAP. I noted the wheat, soy and dairy as well as my FODMAP issues (high fructose corn syrup, onion, garlic and both in powder form as well as tomato products) on the special diets form.

When is your trip? Since this is my first special diets trip, I planned on doing a food trip report when we get back. Or feel free to PM me and I'll let you know how it went.

I do have an Onion allergy and have been many times to WDW. The chiefs at WDW are great. This is one of the few places I feel really safe eating. The chiefs have gone above and beyond what I had ever expected. I was worried about eating at Teppan Edo since they do use onions in there cooking show. The head chef did come out to talk to me and asked if it would be OK to cook my meal in a separate kitchen and bring it out when the others in my party would be getting theirs. The chief at California grill also had the forethought to remember that they do grill onions on there wood grill before the service starts and the only safe way to cook my steak would be in a pan. Even the quick service places have been great. On my last trip the All Start Sports staff was great. They did not have anything on the menu in the pasta station I could eat so they made me a special meal and did not make a big deal about it. Even in the parks I have been taken care of. One I let them know of my allergy and the server reaction I have they take all of the precautions necessary. At Cosmic Ray's they even make sure I get fresh toppings for my burger because the ones on the topping bar could be contaminated. As I said WDW is somewhere I feel safe eating and know that I will be able to get something I want to eat each night not just what I can find on the menu. Keep in mind that if you do not see something on the menu you can ask. Most of the chiefs have access to items from other kitchens in the area to if needed to make sure you have a good time.

YAY I'm going to look forward to reading your report!! Hubs is back on low FODMAP and after he does it for a while, he can have a cheat meal here and there without a problem (once his gut settles down and all, you know how that goes). I'm sure the trip will go amazingly well- chefs have been super accommodating for us in the past. Good luck!!!

My daughter as a severe onion allergy including onion power. She has never had a problem with Disney even at counter serve places. If she had ever gotten them, even a sliver she would be in the ER so she is very careful not to have any contact with them. She has had problems at the convention center in Orlando (she was working there at a convention) and at a boyfriend's home and ended up in anaphylaxis both times
