As per a dining review posted tonight, a DIS'er went to V&A's tonight and was told there is no more foie gras on any menu at WDW. The manager noted that everyone is encouraged to email if they want to see it returned to the menu.

I know this is a controversial topic, but I don't see why Disney needs to interfere with what people want to eat, or what chefs want to prepare.

I can't imagine that PETA is really standing outside the Grand Floridian protesting the serving of Foie Gras! I know the most publicized issue of this was in Chicago and their banning of foie gras, but I thought that had been repealed. Is this common elsewhere in the US? I know it isn't around my neck of the woods or in NYC.

I know Chicago had a ban, but I believe, the chefs figured out ways around the ban - and someone correct me (I'll go google0 but I thought fois gras was ok now in Chicago!!

Obyshoi or Briar Rose should be able to help out!

I haven't been keeping up with the Chicago ban on foie gras, but I read about the foie gras off the menus at all WDW restaurants from the trip report done by engle.

Of course this happens a week before I go to WDW.

I'd like to know who I need to contact to bring it back.

One other thing...I don't think it's been banned. I think they took it off the menu because of the new fiscal year. Same with the Pleasure Island closings. I think both were victims of budget cutbacks. But that's only just my wild theory.

that totally crossed my mind too Lori! But I thought it was just the conspiracy theorist in me! I mean, V&A's already has the surcharge for it, you would think that would cover it. I don't see them taking off the Kobe beef (ok I should be quiet before I give them any other ideas!) Actually I'd be less upset if they did that. Call me unrefined, but beef is beef, foie gras is like no other!

Chicago is now OK with foie gras. The mayor was pretty ticked off and thought these types of regulations might hurt our chances of getting the Olympics. I think Disney is not too worried about the Olympics. I think it might just be a decision the chefs or some executives made for a variety of reasons, though I really don't know.

This may very well be true, but we did get it on September 18th while there at Yachtsman.

Hang in there, this may work out just fine!

Oh yes, it has been banned from disney property. Everyone including the chefs are quite upset about it. Email Disney from the contact page on the website and make your complaints. The chefs and servers would love to see the foie brought back, we would love to see it brought back as well.

I think my complaints will come a little too late for my own trip, but I guess I'll still write them. It irritates me that I lost VMK, then the Adventurers Club, and now foie gras.

The ban was against the SALE of foie gras. So the restaurants simply stopped charging for it.

This whole subject is very controversial (I just read up on it). One side says it's harmful to the ducks, the other side it's no worse than other things. Disney is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Is it any more harmfull to the ducks then say.. being glazed with Orange sauce and slow roasted for a few hours?

Please, they're going to look at my email and be like, what is this lady complaining about now? Definitely too late for my trip too, but what the heck, it's like a daily ritual to send a letter to Disney lately!

aint that the truth!! :rotfl2:

and come on, the economy is in the toilet, if we want fois gras, then give us the fois gras!! porfavor

In years past, I believe WDW temporarily has removed it from the menu during F&W. Maybe that is the case? Or as others have mentioned maybe it is a fiscal decision.

Well, most of the time yes. Depends on whether you care about how they get their "fat livers", but often they're nearly drowned with water being forced into their mouths. Some people don't much care since they're headed for slaughter anyhow, others do because their death has pretty strict standards in terms of being "humane".

That said (I've done a bit of research) foie gras can be kosher because it is considered to benefit man. I'm not Jewish, but tend to prefer kosher meats because of the humane slaughter standards. Off my medium-sized horse now. :hippie:

Please keep discussion limited to it being on/off menu and NOT in how it is created, k?

thank you

My partner was just there from the September 27th - October 4th and he had Foie Gras at California Grill (I was jealous as I was eating Taco Bell at home).

now if you ask me, Taco Bell isn't humane! :rotfl: Seriously, isn't that like grade K beef! (I'm not saying I don't eat it mind you...sometimes it's what will hit the spot!)

Oh, and to the PP that mentioned it being taken off the menu for free dining, from what I can tell, it was taken off after free dining. Also, V&A's would never have been affected by free dining, so they probably wouldn't remove it from their menu based on that...

I doubt this has anything to do with the humane treatment of the animals. I see it as another cost-cutting maneuver by Disney, done under the guise of the fois gras controversy.

And let the flaming begin, because I am now about to say something that will surely aggravate a lot of folks: Anyone who thinks the ducks or geese who are "harvested" for their livers is any less humane than caging chickens and force-feeding them until they are three times their normal size so that we can have our chicken nuggets at Columbia Harbor House, or the slaughter of calves before they've reached maturity so we can have the veal tenderloin with demi-glace at Jiko is sadly deluding themselves. The ducks and geese are treated no worse or differently than any mass-produced animal, including farm-raised seafood. It would be nice if people knew what they were talking about before they made profound observations they've overheard. It's the old argument of the dolphin vs. the tuna. Stand behind all animals and their value as living creatures or stand behind none at all, but never pick and choose. That says more about the inhuman in you than it does about the inhumane treatment of the animal. Unless you are a vegan, your point is moot.

This diatribe isn't directed at any PP, it's just a diatribe.

The entire ban has been lifted. You were right that some chef's tried to get around the letter of the law by not "selling" it but it is all a moot point now. Thank God!

B.

All I have to say is I do not like it at all, ate last year with wife at V&A chef's table and that was the only thing neither one of us liked but we felt obligated to eat it and not leave it behind for chef Scott to see.
