Flying...

Ok, I'll be the different one. I LOVE flying! I love airplanes. I love airports. Now, I don't like the hassles that have come with flying these days; I remember how much simpler it once was to board a plane. But the whole concept of flying in a plane? Love it. It's always been a dream of mine to get my pilot's license. I have flown a couple small planes before. Though, at this point, it doesn't look like I'll get that license anytime soon.

Having said that, I did once have a panic attack on a plane. I don't know what set it off since it was a calm flight, my kids were quiet and sleeping. I have been diagnosed with severe anxiety since then, however.

I used to LOVE to fly. I HATE it now!!

Before DS I would bring a book and my MP3 player to keep myself distracted. I try to fly JetBlue when I can for the TV. Anything I can do to keep myself distracted is how i get through. Now with DS he keeps me distracted!!

When I met my DH he used to hate to fly and I loved it. Then he got a job were he had to travel about 75% of the time and we flip flopped. He doesn't love it but it doesn't bother him anymore. I get into panic mode when we have to go to the airport.

I have always wanted my pilots license as well. I think that as I got older my fear of flying was actually a result of the lack of control I have when on a plane. I truly think that if I was flying the plane I would be fine!!!

I will be taking a xanax this time. I am a wreck when we fly. I used to fly all the time- for work and pleasure. Had a few bad experiences- (which I won't share now since it will just make everyone else nervous) But I am told that the Xanax will help- just one though- my friend told me 2 would make me pass out and I have 4 kids that I have to entertain.

I have tried all the anti anxiety drugs including get this 3 mgs of xanax. It will put me to sleep for awhile but I wake up and sit there trapped with nothing to do. I wish I didn't have retinitis pigmentosa so that a travel book light would even help me. It is so hard to expalin to people that glasses don't correct what is wrong with my vision only really bight light does so that is why I can be on a computer. Just sitting there awake on a plane is torture for me.
Monique have you tried recorded books? You can check them out from the library or rent them (cracker barrels have them) or get them online.
You can even down load them for your I-pod.

I also hate flying, and I've done quite a lot of it. I try to distract myself with crossword puzzles, sudoku puzzles, books that take a lot of concentration to read. I try to tell myself that I'm just on a bus, driving along.

This fall I'm going to New Zealand (from Toronto) and I'm already pretty nervous about it! I'm trying to set it up that we'll have stopovers in both Vancouver and Hawaii, so it won't be as long a flight. Then we're back at WDW in December - and we're going to drive! Yay!

Ugh. Let me join the "I hate flying" club!! I have an 11 hour flight coming up in 3 weeks.

In the past, I usually self-medicate (bad, I know) with Dramamine. And/or wine. I have never liked flying, but I've had some bad experiences that have made me like it even less.

I think for this flight, I am going to ask my doctor about some Xanax. And I always harass the flight attendants. Well, not harass, but it makes me feel better if I feel a little bump or something to grab one as they are walking down the aisle and ask if everything is alright. Usually they are very sweet and hearing it from them (the professionals!) puts me at ease a bit.

No, I haven't but tht is a good suggestion. I might try that or definetly bring my ipod next time. Also I will fly with someone that doesn't just read a book as I am slowly baking on a plane. LOL. I love th caribbean and would like to go back to Turks and Caicos of course so eventually I am going to have to suck it up.

Wow woke up this morning with lots of posts to read... (to bad i have to go to work so i will make it quick)

But it looks like Xanax will be my new friend! :rotfl:

Thanks all for your replys...

Maybe this can turn in to the flyer hater supporter group... :confused3 ;)

Hi. My name is Melanie. I am a nervous flyer. Like, a ridiculously nervous flyer.

Like some other posters, I swear by Xanax. I'm so bad I start taking it the day before the flight  . I get that nervous butterfly-like feeling in my stomach that can quickly make me nauseous. At that point, my head starts moving faster and coming up with outrageous scenarios that will (hopefully) never happen. The xanax stops that. :scared:

Honestly, I bring anything and everything on the plane to distract me. DD7 works perfectly for this purpose. She is a great distraction because I try not to show fear around her so that she will not grow up to have this fabulous fear that mommy has.

Like someone else said, I also like sitting on the aisle. Once we are up in the air, I'm perfectly fine. It's simply the anxiety of sitting in the airport, boarding the plane, waiting to take off, etc. When we're up in the air, I'm good.

I absolutely loath flying. I can do one hour and two hour flights with minimal anxiety but anything more I used to NEED a layover, so that I could get off the plane, get my feet on the ground and relax a bit and then start leg 2 of my journey.

Well in 2006 my DS decided to "study abroad" with his college; Scotland. He begged me to please come over and visit him and sightsee. Well DH loves to fly so he was totally for that but I freaked out ....how was I to have my layover when there basically is no place to layover flying to London.

This is the site that did it for me. I had to do this for DS and for me. I joined their forums (message boards just like the DIS). I took their free (you can donate to it if you want) online fear of flying course and DISer's IT WORKED!!!!! :woohoo: It was the best thing I ever did for myself = conquering that ongoing fear of flying that had plaqued me my whole life. After reading and posting on their forums for the better part of six months I really felt like I have this all under control. London was SEVEN hours BUT I DID IT!!!!! :yay: I was done with worrying about every time someone planned a trip that involved flying I would immediately say "I CAN'T GO, I DON'T LIKE TO FLY".....well that has changed so much. :dance3:

So people before you start taking allot of med's that will knock you out and/or leave you feeling groggy while flying; visit this site. You will be so surprised how you can BEAT THIS FEAR!!! :thumbsup2

(I actually meet one of the nicest DISer's on the DISBoards on the FOF site!!!!) :sunny:

I am very good at short flights, like from Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando...its only 33 min IN the air, and I am going to WDW so I am fine with that!:thumbsup2 As far as flying further than that.....Don't think I could do that, unless I am drugged! Now, my DS can fly from here to Afghanistan and back, and sleep the WHOLE way!:confused3 Doesn't bother him in the least, and he learned his lesson on checking luggage, he carries on now!:thumbsup2

I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I think it's just the length of time spent sitting there with nothing to do. I can't read on a plane because it makes me sick, and I refuse to pay $5 for a headset to watch a chopped up movie. When we go to Europe I take my own headset and listen to music, so that's not too bad.

So basically flying is boring. Maybe that's my problem with it?

Yeah this is basically me... I am not flying for another 5 months and STILL get anxiety now and then.

I really hate to fly so we drive. It is not worth me getting my nerves going if I don't have to.

That's me, just excepting the getting sick while reading part (thank heavens). I've got no problem with flying itself and actually enjoy looking out the window at the mini world below. What gets me is the airport and the waiting and the security and the waiting and the cramming of people into the waiting area and waiting, and then, after even more waiting, finally getting shoe horned into the airplane for a long flight. It's hit the point where I'll ONLY fly Southwest b/c we've got the fantastic little Love Field right here and it's SO much better than DFW. Still a pain and I hate feeling like cattle but it's better than other airports and SW is better than other airlines in their treatment of passengers. Still, I wish I could just have a nice little private jet and fly myself. Anyone want to fund that dream?

I am terrified of flying and have never been on a plane. But, in November I am supposed to fly BY MYSELF to spend a week in FL and go to SSW with my MIL, SIL & a friend. :faint: :faint: I am scared to death, but I'm hoping I can get the courage to go. :teeth:

This was my problem...I would have exciting plans to go somewhere BUT my anxiety leading up to the trip often over shadowed the excitement for the trip. Before I did the FOF online course, friends would say (for instance) "HOW EXCITING YOU ARE GOING TO LONDON"....I would smile and nod and yet inside my mind I was a physical wreck worrying about the flight. :scared:

Good luck, check out the site and before you know it November will be here!!! :woohoo:

p.s. Did both you posters notice how similiar your usernames are??? Too funny!!! :goodvibes
