Flying with meds that need refrigeration?

I'm on a new medication that needs to be kept in the fridge or it melts. I'm wondering how I can transport this from California to Florida and keep it cold? We'll be traveling from about 6am PST to 6pm EST.
I can't bring gel packs through airport security, plus they'd be warm after an hour or so.
I'm thinking about bringing a couple of zip lock bags and getting ice after getting through security and while on the plane.
Any other ideas would be really helpful!

Thanks!

I always carry medication that needs to be kept cold. The first time I got ice from the flight attendants (They won't put it in the refrigerator on board); things did get a little soggy/wet. Now, I have a FRIO pack that works great.

A FIRO pack? What is that and where do I get one?

The website that I used was www.medicool.com

The Frio packs/wallets are made for insulin pens, cartridges and bottles. But, they should work for other types of medications. I bought a large one and it held my pen plus 6 insulin cartridges. It has some type of beads inside that are activated with water. It works really well and is not messy.

I know several people here (myself included) who have bought the Frio Packs from www.coolerconcept.com. I think they are the US importer. I have had the double wallet for several years, and I tend to fly about six roundtrips a year and have never had any problems with Security.

Wonderful! Thank you so much. I'm going to order one today. :)

I was incorrect about the website. :confused3
I used the same one: coolerconcepts. Good consumer service.

Medically necessary gel packs can go through TSA. I travel with Byetta and Lantus, which both to be kept cool. I have a gel pack cooler Byetta sent me that I travel with. At TSA, I unzip the cooler so they can see the medicine inside, tell them before hand it contains gel packs and it goes right through.

::yes::
There is a link in the disABILITIES FAQs thread to the TSA website, which documents what My2Cinderellas wrote.

If you choose to use ice, put the medication into a zip lock bag before putting it into the bag with ice. You do need to be a bit careful - some drugs can freeze if the bottle is in direct contact with ice. You may want to add something to insulate your bottle a bit.

I travel with refrigerated injectable meds frequently and have never even been stopped for my gel packs. I always pack the original medication labels that I cut from the packaging to save space and a copy of my RX but no one with TSA has ever blinked as I put my cooler beg thru x-ray... we are talking at least 30 flight in the past 2 years in large and small airports.

We went thru security with ice packs. Not gel, but ones that had water in them. Like the blue thingies, except ours are kid's ones that are smiley faces.
