Flying with kids

i have not flown in 7 years and this is my first time flying with my two kids so I am a bit nervous.

I know the liquid rule and am planning on buying water in a store after we leave security and before we reach the gate so they have a drink on board. Can I pack snacks such as granola bars, gold fish in my carry on and go through security? I know they will want a snack on the plane and it will be cheaper to bring from home then to buy at an airport store.

Yup - no problem at all to bring non-liquid/gel snacks through security in your carry on.

A good rule of thumb is anything that needs a container to hold it's shape is a liquid. So peanut butter is ok, jelly is not. Unless you have it on a sandwich already made, and then jelly is ok. You could always bring along empty water bottles and fill them after security to save a few bucks.

What about baby wipes and Lysol wipes?

I bought a small pack of Lysol wipes but it is too long to fit in a quart size bag. I always have baby wipes with me for spills. I would love to wipe down the tray table with Lysol wipes and then have the baby wipes for their hands.

Sure, you will be fine. I always pack a little lunch box for each in their carry-ons of snacks, including an apple, bagel, granola bar, etc. One thing you might want to do is get each their own water bottle. Make sure it is empty when you go through security and then fill it up once you are past security. Again, much cheaper than buying the bottled water at the airport! And I always carry wipes with me and have a thing of sanitizer in my quart bag. With the movies, headphones, iPads, books and toys, we were set!

If any of your kids are still sippy cup age, they will probably let you bring full sippy cups through security. Make sure the kid is going through the same security with you if you have the bag with the sippy cups in it, and not another parent or adult. Have the sippy cups out and in a bin ready to be scanned, like your shoes. At my local airport (Baltimore/Washington) they have never given me a problem. At MCO, I had to go through extra screening, but it wasn't a big deal. They just had to open the cups and swab them for explosives. But it saved me from buying a couple $3 bottles of water or juice at the airport store. My son is 2 1/2 and still at an obvious sippy cup age. If your kids are say, 4 or older, this might not fly (no pun intended!)

Many airports now have the filtered water bottle filling stations to fill your empty water bottles up post security. Haven't had to BUY water the last few time we've flown. Many places like starbucks or Timmies will fill you waterbottle for free as well.

My dd is 4.5 and I still bring thermos' full of milk on flights :-D they just quickly test it and we're through in no time. They may not if it was just water...but just wanted you to know.

Just another tip. Both my kids starting flying when they were 3. We always played "airport security" to get them ready for what they might encounter. Beeps through the metal detector, taking off shoes, parting with your favorite stuffy and having to put it through the xray machines in a bin? They were ready for it all and we never had a problem at the airport.

Don't forget some lollipops to help with the ear popping. Not sure about gum with the kids.

Peanut butter is NOT ok.

The rule of thumb is this:

If you can
SPREAD it
SMEAR it
DRIP it
POUR it
DRINK it

it is considered a liquid. Since PB is spreadable, it's a no go. UNLESS you have the small JIF-type individual PBs.

It's considered a paste. It's spreadable and smearable...and for reasons I can't get into here, is something that is not allowed through the screening checkpoints.
