First time flying direct with Allegiant. I wanted to let me kids take a personal item, maybe a backpack, but I've heard they are sticklers on the size. Just wondering what others who've flown with them have taken on board. We definitely don't want to get dinged with any kind of fees last minute.

A regular book bag sized backpack is fine for a personal item on every airline. It just has to fit under the seat in front of you.

Have you done this specifically on an Allegiant flight? I only asked this because I've heard some people say they are strict to their required measurements (I saw these posted online). I figure it just has to fit under the seat as well but wanted to verify with someone who's done it just in case.

I agree that it's smart to zero in on each specific airline's rules rather than relying what other airlines do.

Visit Allegiant Air's "Checked and Carry-On Baggage Fees and Allowances" page at http://www.allegiantair.com/aaRes/aaRes_popup_BaggagePolicy.htm

Among if things, the page provides the exact maximum size of what Allegiant Air allows as a personal item:

Personal Item. The one (1) Personal Item such as a purse, briefcase, laptop computer, small backpack, or small camera must fit completely underneath the seat in front of you, and must not exceed maximum size of:
7 in. H x 15 in. W x 16 in. D (17.8 cm x 38.1 cm x 40.6 cm)

I would go by what the page says, even if you find someone on DISboards who was able to bring on something larger as a personal item without incurring a fee.

It's worth reading the rest of the page. Allegiant Air has its own rules, and they're different than what you might have experienced on other airlines. For example, checked bags must be "under 40 pounds," while U.S. domestic airlines generally allow a maximum of 50 pounds without charging an over-weight fee.

We have flown Allegiant many times and have never had a problem with the personal item you can put under the seat. I usually have a north face backpack with wipes, waterbottle, snacks, ipad and magazines. Both of my kids carry either an ipad or ds and headphones. They also carry their personal blankets that we wrap to look like a small sleeping bag and attach to the backpack. The blanket is removed before putting under the seat.

We have never had issues. Hope this helps.

Thanks For posting. I was looking looking for something like this saying a backpack would work. Ours fit the size requirements when flipped certain ways :) so we'll probably take those.

.......

That measurement covers the normal sized backpack.

We just flew Allegiant last month and DH took a regular sized Jansport backpack as his personal item with no problems.

We just got home on Friday, flying Allegiant. We had 3 regular school size backpacks and I had a different style bag, and they all fit the dimensions (mine pushed the limits, but I could have redistributed things as the items settled to the bottom and made it bigger there, plus my DS had room left in his). All fit under the seats just fine and there was no second glances to our bags nor did we have to put them in any box to measure before we got on either of our flights. (We flew Duluth to Las Vagas). We actually packed all our stuff for our 4 night trip in those bags, doing laundry once we reached our DVC room at the Grand Californian. I couldn't believe we were able to do it, but we did! :)

The gate person in Vegas was very clear that anyone in Zone 6 (which we were) that came on with more than one bag (or anything larger) than what would fit under the seat would be paying an extra $50.

Backpacks should be fine. And the sticklers seem to be airport specific. We were a little over on bag weight coming back from Clearwater, and they just said "close enough". :)

My son and I have both used this bag on Allegiant as a personal item without a second look.

We flew on Allegiant last week and my DH had a regular size Jansport backpack and I had a Lands End tote - no problem at all. The group of passengers without carry-ons are allowed onboard first with their personal items and we didn't see anyone who was targeted for the size of their item.

Thanks everyone! My personal item is definitely small enough. My kids each have a small Pottery Barn Kids backpack and I think it will fit under the seat no problem. I am going to measure to be sure they fit the guidelines. I think they will, depending on which way you flip the bag ;).
