Flying with a Baby - Feeding?

Hi All,
We thought we had it sussed, we were going to buy pre-sterilised, disposable bottles to take on the plane (with cartoned formula milk), but the manufacturer has gone bust - bottles are now nowhere to be found.

So now we are not sure what the best way is to deal with taking baby's food. Do we sterilise the bottles in advance? We are staying in an airport hotel the night before and plan to use the twighlight check-in so will only have hand-luggage.

So what do other people do when flying transatlantic?
We are worried about making the bottles up in advance due to possibly not being able to refrigerate them.

Any help is appreciated with this puzzle.

When we went to florida, I took powder with me in the suitcase and lots of ready made cartons for the milk on the flight. You can buy steriliser bags which come with sterilising tablets and then hang on a door to sterilise. I think it was Mothercare or Boots which have them. The cabin crew were happy to heat up the baby's jar of food for me and also the bottles. They also washed the bottle afterwards for me. Another idea is to take the powder with you in a travel box in the meausred out amounts and get warm water off the cabin crew and then mix up the milk to make the bottle and cool to the temperature you want it.

Yes, we took powder and sterilised water plus sterilising tabs (cold water type) for tyhe journey. no probs whatsoever

Our baby will be 8 months when we go in december,I am going to sterilise his bottles then put them in sandwich bags and use cartons for the plane and take powderd milk for the rest of the time as your not allowed to take cartons into the country.

This might sound a little naive, but how did you open the cartons on board the plane? Obviously scissors are not permitted....?

I get the small cartons and you can tear them with you fingers i do this all the time if i take Bailey to town and he is due a feed.

Really ??? Oh dear, we have cartons for both outward and return flights ! Where did you learn this?

I think I must have posted it on this board before and someone said that customs will take them of you but at least you can take powderd and also you can only take baby food that is sealed i think in a jar or powderd but must not contain meat.

You can hide cartons in your suitcase. You just need to learn how well to hide things. I worked out how many plus 2 extra I would need. We did get the jars checked because the foot and mouth was rife here and they let me keep my jar cos it had chicken in it. That was for the return journey and it had to be sealed. Dd was on big food by then but the jars were because the meals weren't hat I wanted her to have on the plane (well they were minging)

I've always just ripped the carton open or asked a cabin crew member to open it as they can do it at the front.

I can only comment on what we found when we were in Florida. Our little boy was very happy with the milk in cartons available in the supermarkets. he had no problem with the baby milk available in Florida or the uSA as a whole.

yes, Boots advised us yesterday that the manufacturer went into liquidation, so we checked Tesco (where we had seen them previuosy) and the shelves were bare....boooh!

That explains why tesco were doing bogof recently.

I took SMA cartons in my hand luggage and in a small box with bubble wrap around packed in my suitcase to use on the return journey. Customs did take baby food away from me that contained meat but left my baby milk alone, he came across a big tin of powered SMA in the case questioned me about this and checked no further. Obviously its a chance you take, good luck and in my eyes worth a gamble.

There are 2 manufacturers that do the pre sterilised bottles, one company begins with S and the other company begins with the initials T T which is a very large baby company! Sorry but don't know if I can give the name of the companys. But I have a funny feeling it is the company that begins with S that has gone bust. If you like I can PM you the name of the other company as these ones are sold in quite a few places. Hope this helps.

I know it was a while ago, DD now 4, when she was 10 months old, John Lewis did a travel pack, which contained everything you needed.

Bottle frame (the easiest why to describe it)
bags which go inside the bottle frame.
travel teets, which stay steri for 24 hours, and the box which you used to serilise in.

£20 that was 3 years ago not sure if still available.

It was a big name mind gone blank. Will edit when i think about it.

And used cartons of milk which the cabin crew opened for us.

Avent do pre-sterilised bottles, which you can then re-sterilise several times.

Edited to add - Princess Jackson, I've just seen your post, and I think Avent the one you were thinking of. I used it too. But they don't do the bags anymore, but the new system called VIA, which is what I've just mentioned.

Avent but it had to be used with the disposable system. I now think they have replaced it with the via system or something.

You could try to get on www.playtexbaby.com and see if they have the bottles with the sterlized plastic inserts. I used them with both of my babies, if you are not familair with them they are bottles with no bottom in it and each time you want to use it you put a new plastic insert in it, and then throw it away when you are done. That may help you. There are pictures of the bottles on the website.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Looks like my Wife has hit the jackpot. She has just cleared the shelf in the local Chemist of Sterilised Bottles. Seems that was about the only place left with any available, so now we have all that we need, bottles and cartons, ready to go!

The holiday strategy completely changes with a baby, as we are finding out, but can't wait to get there!
