flying Vs Greyhound

Ok, my DS and I have never flown before and with all that happened on 9/11, we are not sure we want to.

I have been checking greyhound fares for several months. I think I can get us to Orlando for $350. I know and trust greyhound.

So, the big question is can we trust flying? If so, what is the best airline and can we get R/T tickets cheaper than $350?

In my opinon flying isthe best. A greyhound would take dramatically longer. Also keep in mind, traveling by plane is now of the safest ways to travel. Sercurity is so tight and maybe over tight. There is a risk involved but your greyhound bus could crash to. Your more likely to die in a bus crash then a plane crash. I tell people to live a little! You cant live in fear of the what if's. Most of the airlines are good.

I prefer delta just because I have status on them and they always have a been solid, good airline. Good safety record too. Delta usually offers pretty good fares to. Try orbitz.com and see what the cheapest air is you can get. Southwest flies out of Kansas City too, I think. They are a good no frills, low cost airline. I hope some of this helps. If you need any more advice, let me know. I love to fly and travel so I am pretty much now a disney/airline/airplane expert. lol Hope this helps.

Your chances of a Greyhound bus accident are actually much higher then the chances you will be injured on a plane.
Personally $350 for that long of a bus ride sounds horrid. How many hours are you on that bus???

I never looked at taking Greyhound before, so out of curiousity I looked at booking a trip from Kansas City to Orlando for May 9-15 (just picked some dates at random). I was surprised to see that it would take 30-31 hours with either 2 or 3 transfers depending on your departure time. The price I got for 2 tickets was $276, this was purchasing 2 tickets at the 7 day advance purchase rate, which was cheaper than the $351 quoted for one adult and one child with the companion rate.

I'd at least look and see if you can get a good sale on either Southwest or Airtran. Southwest has 2 or 3 nonstops to Orlando daily. 30 hours on the bus would be too much for me. And as others have stated, air travel really is incredibly safe when looking at the big picture.

If its 17 hours, there is no way I would take greyhound. Thats to long. Like the others and I said, ton better chance of being in a greyhound accident then airplane accident.

Also, the greyhound stations in the Orlando area may not be in the best parts of town. Just like some of the Amtrak stations. Flying is soooooooooo much better. The airports are very cool and alot safer than the bus stations.

I heard on the news that last year you had a one in 10million chance of being in an airplane accident last year. I think you've got to fly. You may be a bit nervous, but its so much easier. Try Jet Blue the tv's will keep your mind off of it. Don't think about the 17 hours going down because you'll be excited to get there. Think about the long, arduous, cramped 17 hours going home which will not be fun or exciting.

Besides driving, there are alternatives to both Greyhound and flying - take the train. You would have to change trains in New Orleans and (by the most direct routing) make a short bus connection between St. Louis and Carbondale (Illinois). So its not a short trip, but it is a more comfortable way to travel.
