Ok so I'm a little too uptight about my dd flying but you know how it is to be a mom. :) Steph is flying back from Detroit tomorrow. Flying out was stressful enough for me..now I see theres lots of rain and stormy weather up that way. Here's my question. What if the plane cant take off and you miss you connecting flight? What happens? Does the airline help or are you on your own?

Never happened to me, but I'm sure they'll take care of them. My American Airlines flight was late due to safety issues, and the airline made special arrangements to help those with short layovers make their flights. What airline is she flying? Maybe someone with experience with that airline could make you feel better.

How you are treated on a delayed/cancelled flight depends upon what the problem is. If a flight is cancelled due to equipment problems, the airline will pay for the nights accomodations. If it is due to weather , they take the attitude that "hey. it's not our fault, you are on your own". I found this out on Friday. All afternoon flights from Atlanta to Detroit were cancelled due to storms in Detroit. I ended up sleeping (more sitting and staring than sleeping) in the terminal, and flying home on Saturday morning. I hope things work out better for you.

She is flying Northwest Air.
Yikes so if its storms... will we have to pay again? Can you tell we havent flown in years and years (like 20)?

You can be assured that you will reach your final destination. You will be rescheduled to the next available flight once weather clears up. No additional costs are incurred.

Either the airline will move her to the next available flight home and if none - they should pay for her to spend the night close to the airport and get a flight out in the morning

You will be moved to the next available flight, but if flight is cancelled due to weather the airline is not required to foot the bill for a nights stay.

Ann, how old is Steph now? I can't remember!

They may not be required to pay for lodging, but they may do it anyway, depending on the circumstances.

DS got stuck in Boston once, when he was only 14 (all by himself!!) and the airline (AirTran) drove him to the hotel, put him up for the night, gave him meal vouchers for dinner and breakfast, and picked him up for his flight the next morning.

They were absolutely wonderful to deal with!

And Ann, if you are really worried, I have several friends who work for Northwest. I could call and see what they recommend doing?
