I do not think flying in the day of is necessarily as risky as everyone makes it sound.
I get that it sounds like we're saying it's so risky.
It's not that the chances are necessarily high THAT it will happen.
But if it DOES happen, the risks are now 100% and there aren't a lot of ways to fix it.
WDW vacation, just call them and you check in a day late, no biggie. If you have multiday tickets, maybe they'll drop one day off and refund you, or really it's like $10 per person that you're out.
With a cruise? The ONLY way you can get that trip is to 1st have a passport; there is no other option without that passport. 2nd, have good money available on your CC to buy a ticket to the place where you can board if you can board, or have travel insurance that will book that flight for you. 3rd have room on the CC for a hotel stay if that's in the cards (or travel insurance that will take care of that).
That's why we urge people to get in early. NOT because it WILL happen, but because IF it happens, you're out so much money.
We were getting off the ship (Freedom of the Seas) for a day in Sint Maarten and we saw people pulling several big rollerbags towards the ship. They were obviously joining us. It was day 4. That's a lot of days, on a 7 night cruise to miss. And after that day all we had left was sea days.
