I hate to fly. HATE TO FLY.. But in order to go to DW this year, we have to fly because driving from New Jersey is tooooo long! (I know i've done it about 10 times!)
So I agreed to fly and I'm already panicking. Valium doesn't help me in airplanes. I need to invent this pill. Here goes...
It's a pill that you take on an airplane in case you're going to crash. :scared1: Within moments of taking the pill you totally pass out so you don't know what's going on (Death, or possibly crashing and living) That way if you die, you don't go through your last moments panicking, and if you live, the pill wears off in say, an hour. Sound good!? :rolleyes2

It really is faster and much safer than driving but I'm sure that doesn't help. :) Try square breathing. I've flown many times but panic still sets in sometimes. Here's a link to a website which gives a simple explanation. It really is a great stress reliever for use in any situation.

Here's a fear of flying website. It contains some reassuring information.

Many people recommend a drug to help. I can't remember the name but I'm sure someone will chime in. I'm not a medicator.

Hope you have a great trip.

Also...maybe try JETBLUE. They have the tv's on the plane which are definitely a distraction and help pass the time quicker. Good luck to you.

very strange post - but love the picture of the golden (have one too)

Just chiming in as another golden owner, and also one who takes a handful of xanax every time I fly. :thumbsup2

I have the worst fear of flying and both of my flights in the last 3 years Xanax came to the rescue. I was much calmer and was able to make the 2 hour flight with no problem.

Another golden lover who hates flying. My flying tips are simple.....understand that the plane really wants to be in the air..it is designed just for that. And watch the flight attendents. If they are calm and at ease, then you don't have to worry. Once I started flying with my dd, who was a nervous wreck, I figured that I needed to present a calm attitude in order for her to become a 'good flier'. Adopting that 'care free' attitude has helped me to actually calm down.

1st... Aren't Goldens the best!!?? :thumbsup2

2nd... I've flown tons of times... I was OK most of the time..(Been to Europe 4 times, Cali once, and flew to FL three times. But for some reason now I have the worst time thinking about flying. We drove to DW for our honeymoon even!! Everyone was shocked that we weren't flying. BUt we both did not want to get on a plane... Even though we knew driving would take 17 hours to get there.
I'm going to try Xanax.. Thanks for the help!!!

I know it's off topic.... but here's another pic of my golden watching the dog show :)
Notice all my Nightmare before christmas snowglobes and also my Haunted Mansion one ;)

if you can't fly Jet Blue, maybe get a little portable DVD player. Distractions help a lot.

OH MY GOSH! I have almost the same identical picture of my golden retriever watching the dog show. That is too funny! I also hate to fly and have to be medicated. We're flying in June, and my stomach is already queasy!

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! I don't hate flying, I just hate TAKING OFF and LANDING! I figure if you are in the air it's in someone elses hands..when you are taking off and landing it's more in the Pilots hands. Don't know if that makes you feel any better but I'm flying in October too! I sometimes take Bodine but it makes me sleepy and I don't EVER sleep on planes because I have sleep Apnea and the snorring would drop the plane! HAHA

I've driven to Florida many times years ago and have flown there 3 times. Those 3 times were my worst at Disney, I hate flying, knowing I have to board a plane about 2 days out from leaving WDW, I get all wound up and returning home in about 3 days, I hurt all over from muscle crams from all that stress. I know its safe and fast but I can't do it. We don't drive there anymore, too stressful with all the traffic now a days. Our last 8 trips have been by Amtrak. No problems for me, I sit back, relax, read a book, snack me and wife play games etc., and upon arriving at Disney, I'm a new happy person. For us, we love train travel, costs less than driving and if I did fly, I would not try for the cheapest air fare, to me its like "I want a big new car cheap".

another one here who HATES to fly. for quite a while i was OK- even though i was not crazy about it-- but THEN all of a sudden- i just hated it! me and dh drove to disney (from NJ) about 3 or 4 times becasue i was so scared. we even tried the train- but that took about 19 hours-- whewwww :sad2:

in dec we flew to disney- becasue we took our 4 yr old niece. i was probably ok becasue i was more worried about her being afraid and it took my mind off of ME being scared (plus the 2 ativan helped!- another med just like xanax) the ativan just realxed me enough that my heart wasnt pounding and my stomach was not in knots!

and guess what- i felt Ok about flying with the ativan in dec that we then flew to mexico in jan!! (that trip was to relax from the disney trip with a 4 yr old!)

we are now going back to disney in sept 06 and i am not really worried about flying as long as i can take my pills. i take one when i wake up (even getting ready for the airport scares me to death!) :scared1:

try headphones- with some great flying music-- pink floyd perhaps! i am sure they will work very well with your xanax! :lmao: ahhhhhh!

:smokin: maddhatir :hippie:

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who hates to fly. We're from Illinois so it's either a 3 hour flight or a 20 hour drive that DH would never agree to. I just keep reminding myself that we're headed to the Happiest Place on Earth. Portable DVD player helps, too. I'm going to have to try Zanax next time - thanks for the suggestions!
