Flying from Eastern PA to Rapid City, SD--

A question for a friend--I thought some of you "airfare wizzards" could help with.

My friend wants to fly to Rapid City (August 8th to the following Monday) and isn't finding anything under $500.

She is willing to fly from Philly, Newark, NYC area airports.

What is the best airline to use for such a trip?

Will it be impossible to find a flight under $500?

I can't believe I saw your post!!! I've been checking out airfare to go to Rapid City myself this summer (June 18 to June 26) to check out the monuments & do some hiking. The best fares I found so far were on Northwest Air between $389-$419 depending on the time leaving Philly. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to go as my bonus wasn't as big as I expected it to be - oh well - Mount Rushmore isn't going anywhere - right?

Is she going to Sturgis? We're planning to arrive a few days after the motorcycle rally is over, and I'm worried about finding a camping place. I hear it is a huge event. I'm going to try to make a camping reservation soon.

Northwest is probably your best bet from the east ... $500 is high ... daughter flew from Dulles in Dec for $420 and sisters from South Carolina for about the same. Check to see what airlines fly into Rapid and then check those ... the choices are fewer out here in the remote areas ... but the scenery is worth it! The Black Hills are wonderful .. especially in the summer. Don't miss Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, hike Harney Peak (awesome!), Spearfish Canyon, taffy shop in Keystone is the best; try the Alpine Inn in Hill City for great food; don't miss Iron Mountain Road and explore the back roads ... beautiful! Of course, I'm biased ... I live in South Dakota! Enjoy your trip!
