Fly down...drive home

We would really like to fly down from IN and drive home, renting a rental car, but when we looked into it it doesn't seem feasible because of charges from rental co for dropping at a new location. Charges are around $450 as a drop fee, unless we pay a higher per day rental fee. What would be $200 for the rental returned locally turns into $700-$800 with fees and taxes ect. Has anyone done this and might have some tips for us? Can it be done any cheaper? We are making this an adult trip and just wanted to take the long way home, enjoy our trip back through the mountains, make stops along the way ect. We were trying to cut out the 14 hr trip on the way down though and save us time.

Yeah, one way drops are prohibitively expensive. The only question I might have is when you're planning on going. Sometimes in the early spring, the car rental companies will have deals on one way rentals out of Florida (I've seen as low as $10/day) to move their cars back north that the snowbirds were using.

The only other thing I can think of, and this is neither cost or time effective, would be for you to drive from home to Northern VA and put you and your car on the AutoTrain...then drive home at your leisure.

Spending that kind of money and the extra hours it would be to drive I say just fly home.
