Fluff Debate: Should we share our first class seats with DSes

Judging by the results so far it looks like most people agree with the OP!

Besides 3 kids into 2 seats just doesn't go, even if they are extra large first class seats

I voted on the Debate Board too---let the kids keep their coach seats. You're paying for the trip, so you should do what you want, without feeling guilty. My parents went to Hawaii when I was 16, they didn't even take me.

I don't know, I guess this isn't fluffy, but I just want to say, my kids work their tails off. My 15 year old DD goes to a private school that starts at 7:30 and ends at 5:30. She then comes home (if she doesn't have an evening requirement, which she does 3 nights a week, and does her homework, usually until 10:30, 11:00. She takes honors couses and earns straight A's. She will probably get into the college of her choice and is one of the nicest kids you'd ever want to meet. She works with the elderly and young kids in church. My DS is in 7th grade, earns straight A's, is as involved as his sister and helps more around the house because his school hours are shorter.


I'm so unbelievably proud of them and enjoy having them around so much that I guess I want to share what I have with them.

I'm proud of that.

So how would this be any different than going out for a dinner etc., and not taking the kids? My kids are awesome, too, but it doesn't mean they have every perk available. These young men are, IMO, blessed to be taking a trip to Hawaii. They do not need the room to stretch, that an older (Sorry Dawn) adult would. So, I obviously, again, voted for them to remain in coach.

Well, probably because you do take them out to dinner occasionally also.

Look, it's no big deal. It's just what I would do. It's a very long flight.

I dunno - your kids are younger, right? When we were kids, it was a family vacation, but now that we're adults, my parents take vacations and invite us along. Those are THEIR vacations. And that started when my older sister and I were in college and my little sister was still in high school, around the age of Dawn's kids.

I voted to let them sit in the back - and don't change seats. The one time I sat in first class, the flight attendants didn't want us going back and forth into the coach section.

And, like I said on the other thread - DH and I didn't get to sit anywhere near each other on our honeymoon flight. We haven't ye needed counseling because of that.

When our family flies, we like to sit together, so it would be everyone in first class or everyone in coach. We enjoy being together as a family on vacation and that includes the flight.

I can't really say... my children aren't those ages yet (older teens/adults) and so at the moment I can't imagine going on a vacation where my children are in coach while I'm in first class... that's just unfathomable to me... atleast at this point.
But who knows- by the time they are teens maybe I'd want to sit away from them too. Hmm, I dunno. If I was going on a vacation with my children I probably wouldn't want to sit in first class while they sat in coach-seperate from me and DH. If I couldn't get us all in first class I'd probably have us all sitting in coach- but like I said... who knows. My thinking on that might change by the time I have 3 teens. LOL
(I did not answer the poll since my answer is not on it- my answer being that I wouldn't sit in first class while their seats were in coach)

I agree with that answer...no way would I sit someplace without my kids....its a family vacation and they are sitting with me like it or not LOL!!

Since your kids are older, and the chance of them getting into trouble or fighting with each other is pretty remote, I see no reason for you to have to sit with them. If they were younger, I'd say you should all sit together so you could supervise them. Chances are with such a long flight they'll probably sleep through most of it anyway.

Kids need to eventually learn that they are not automatically entitled to the same priveleges as adults. It would have been nice if you'd had the extra miles to spare, but there is a huge difference between a first class and a coach seat when it comes to FF miles. I say have a drink and toast to your sons' health while you're sitting up there too!

Incidentally, this reminds me of a great Seinfeld episode where Jerry sat in first class and Elaine got stuck in coach. It was one of my favorites.

Dh and I flew first class to Hawaii 2 years ago (using points also) and I'm pretty sure they won't even let you. They get to know the people in first class and I'm pretty sure they would frown on you switching. Heck, flying coach class 99% of the time, I know they don't even like you to go to the bathroom up there even in an emergency!

Looking at the pictures of your children, I can certainly see why you would feel that way. We felt that way too when our children were small. Right now, the "smallest one is 5'10" and the biggest one is 6'2". Two are young adults, the youngest is 16. They will be more than fine in coach. Its where DH and I have sat for years. We will have 18 days of "family time" in Hawaii.

You are exactly right. I may have a glass of wine but it doesn't mean that my kids get to have one. It was hard enough to get 5 seats on the same plane. My DH is still waiting for his Maui to LAX segment in first class to come through. He is priority wait listed. I may end up in FC by myself for five hours. Oh well, someone has to sit there.

Actually the "numbers" are breaking a bit more in favor of the kids having a first class seat. It was more 95%/5% on the DB board. Here, 10% favor the kids "sharing the seats". Maybe the CB is different from the DB.
