Shopping and Downtown Disney
Saturday 27th August 2005
The plan for Epcot is off due to inclement weather so the second planned shopping day is brought forward. (Oh Joy!)
A very wet start to the day today - hurricane Katrina has now officially formed and as it passes over south Florida it is a category 1.
This will move up a gear to a category 2 by the end of the day as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico and hits the warm gulf waters.
We start the day at Wal-Mart
Lena "allows" me to buy her 2 x pairs of shoes and a watch!
Ricky "allows" me to buy him 2 x pairs of shoes!
Hannah "allows" me to buy her 1 x pair of shoes and a school bag and I buy a leather case and 2 x towels.
$143 total.
A total bargain but quite sickening to think what it would have cost in the U.K.!
Hannah is a little disappointed as she had set her heart on buying a Nintendo DS out here this year.
They are still relatively expensive and if she buys this now then she will have no money left for the rest of the holiday.
I try to reason with her but can't help feeling like an "old meany!"
She has learned well from her brother last year who managed to "con" a laptop out of me by using the "Puss in Boots - Eyes" trick from Shrek 2!
She's got it off to a tee - I'm powerless to resist and without any hesitation I find myself $125.00 down in a matter of seconds!
I am now "Father of the year!" (Momentarily!).
"Thanks Dad" she grovels "Why don't you buy yourself something nice?"
Yeah right! What with? Do they take Tic-Tacs as a downpayment on a new villa with pool?
Joyce purchases a new broom (presumably for getting around town on!).
Cyril spends the whole time in the cake department eyeing up the Danish Pastries!
Next we drive down the 192 to the "Visitors Flea Markets"
Why would they assume visitors would want to purchase fleas?
I purchase 3 x leather belts for the princely sum of $5 and get a backscratcher thrown in for free! The relationship between the belts and the backscratcher is a complete mystery to me but the little Oriental lady on the stall was most insistent the I should take it!
"Oh well" says Lena - "maybe you could use it to shoe-horn your huge backside into your swimming trunks!"
Huh! A bit un-called for!
On to Super-Target - Ricky buys a mega-giga-terrabyte thingumy hard drive for his laptop.
Lena buys a car boot organiser (to organise her boots in the car?)and Hannah buys a Kamikaze (sorry - a Tamagotchi - I've just been told!).
We lunch today at Taco Bell - a first for us and - boy - have we been missing out here - it's lovely!
Me, Lena and Ricky have the "special offer" buy one get one free (AKA a BOGOF!) Taco's and Hannah has some Nacho's with a hot cheese dip. Joyce & Cyril have donned their gas masks and are not looking too happy with this venue - so - feeling weak at the knees after smelling Taco's - they go next door to Bob Evans.
We make our way back home with our purchases and the rain has finally begun to ease up.
Back at the villa we jump in the pool and almost immediately jump straight out again as a massive thunder clap sounds overhead.
I retire to the jacuzzi for a soak - I think I may have over eaten a bit today!
Yes - they are rubber rings but it's actually a true reflection of how I feel!
The rain looks set to stay so we leave Joyce & Cyril to a bit of peace and quiet at the villa while we go to tackle Downtown Disney with the kids.
It's very busy in Disney Quest and to be honest - not very enjoyable so we don't stay long. It's full of noisy kids.......... Hmm.......! Oh well - I suppose that's what it's meant for really but it's a bit off putting for us "big kids"!
I still cant get the hang of those Daeleks that play basket ball on the fifth floor!
We have a look around some of the shops at Downtown Disney and gaze wistfully over the water at the lucky occupants of the villas and apartments at the new Saratoga Springs Resort.
I have looked at the cost of buying DVC points but I don't think it's really any good for us - we would need enough for a two or three bed place which - even at a "Re-seller's" - would set us back about £15 to £20K.
Besides - there are still other hotels and resorts that I would like to try before settling for the same place each year.
We visit the Candy Cauldren for a few "Treats" befor a final "sniff" around Lena's favourite - the Bath Shop.
We visit Subway for a "meatball sub" and then WinDixie for some essentials. Then head back to the villa.
I know it's a bit of a short trip report today and no exciting photo's to accompany it - but it's a shopping day - what do you expect?
Ok - here's a couple of food pictures for you "non-readers"!
CANDY CAULDREN........
More of the same........
Candy Apples.............
And finally - the Boardwalk Bakery.......Slurp.........
I rest my case!
Tomorrow we have some catching up to do so it's going to be a "Disney Day".
Epcot and Magic Kingdom - I promise.......!
