Floridians in Wilma's Path - Check In!

I have a question. We are in a rental while we are building. Our pool has the child saftey fence. Should I just put it in the holes or leave it pulled back like I have it now? It is bolted and I do not have the tools to remove it.

Yup I've got some thick clouds here to the south side of the house that look smokey. But the north and east/west sides are pretty clear.

we're in south broward. Husband is still working on putting up the shutters. the sky is starting to become alittle more cloudy but it's still nice enough for my son to play outside with his neighborhood friends (cause he'll be couped in side all day tomorrow!)

We left ours up. and in the holes.

I don't know what you mean by pulled back. Ours is eye and hook connectors to the walls and not bolted allowing it to be removed. Is yours a permanent attachment?

I think it will be okay either way.

We take it down for evacuations as we are on the coast. Since we are home--safer to keep it up.

Our 1st hurricane as well, just moved here the end of June. We are 2 1/2 miles west of AKL and the sky is dark, wind picking up slightly. Early this morning was kind of eerie, very very quiet outside, no breeze at all and the birds were even silent. My DH hit Publix about 2 hours ago and he said the lines were horrendous. I have heard that last year we lost power for only a short time so hopefully we won't this year. Our complex did leave a letter on our door stating that management would be leaving and would not return till after the storm and they get the all clear. We have moved the vehicles away from trees, brought in almost everything off the lanai and am playing the waiting game like everyone else. Glad to see that the kids are off tomorrow, my DH was working out at Port St Lucie and was evaced on Friday so at least I'm not doing this alone.

"I don't know what you mean by pulled back. Ours is eye and hook connectors to the walls and not bolted allowing it to be removed. Is yours a permanent attachment? "

Ours is in two pieces with the eye and hook in the middle and permanently attatched on each side.

I do not have it in the holes now but I am going to do this now.

Thanks

Hi from Boca Raton! We are busy putting up our shutters, boy what a pain in the you know what! We expect tropical storm force winds later tonight and hurricane force winds by tomorrow. I was just at the local hospital and they are locking down early this evening, patients and staff only. I just gassed up all our cans for the generator. I hope we make it through without any major damage. The thing that worries me the most is the possible tornadoes. Scary. Good luck to everyone else out there. Make sure and check in when it is all said and done. Go away Wilma!

Blue skies in Suntree also

We are in Suntree also and it just started getting dark and gloomy looking in the last few minutes. It did that a few hours ago when I ran up to Books-A-Million. It looked bad when I went in and came out 20 minutes later and it was beautiful.

Checking in...

Bradenton here, I hope everyone is safe!!!! My mom (piratemom189) flew out to Vegas this morning for work, lucky her.... she escaped! They closed school in manatee and sarasota which means no work for me tomorrow!!! Woo Hoo!!

(have to find something good in this madness...)

I just have the worst feeling its gonna take a slight turn and pound sarasota/bradenton

Remember with Charlie? Said it was gonna it tampa (north) and it his punta gorda (south)

This time theyre saying Naples (south) so watch it hit north.

Fingers crossed!!!

Everone stay safe!!! <3

Clermont here.

I am headed to work at the WL soon but am off the next 2 days so I don't have to worry about work.

No school tomorrow, my DD is very happy. We just got back from the grocery store to stock up on food that we will eat anyways but not much that has to be refrigorated. No one here has boarded up and we arent' planning on either.

Stay safe everyone!!

Melbourne here - enjoying some sunny :sunny: weather while we can.

Can I ask what probably will seem like a REALLY stupid question to you hurricane veterans? How do you all decide whether you should go into work in a situation like this? Do you just not go? Do you wake up and say "Oh, doesn't look too bad where we are" and go in?

I normally commute via bus so I kind of wonder if they would even be running tomorrow anyway. The county offices (Sarasota) and schools are all going to be closed. Even if I was willing to risk going to work myself, I sure would not feel comfortable with my kids traveling around in a car in what could be 74 mph+ gusts of wind (I would have my BIL take me in/pick me up.)

So what do you do? How do you decide/know? Unless, of course, you get a call from your employer to tell you to stay home in which its a no-brainer. :)

Sorry if this comes across as completely idiotic. :)

South West Broward here. I work in a hospital and was just sent home to return @ 11p tonight ( I work during the Hurricane and DH works after) They told us that we would have to stay until Mon evening or at the lastest Tues morning. Not too many people in my neighborhood are boarding up, not even my DH which makes me soooo MAD!! I told him do you know how crazy it makes me being at work during this thing knowing they have no covering on the windows. It's like talking to the wall. I hope everyone else in Wilma's path please stay safe. And say a prayer for us all.

Kat--If my hubby can't stand up to get in the car--that will be the first clue ;).

2nd--not an idiotic question at all.

We've had various closings already. I had an appointment tomorrow with an Orthopedist...he called patients personally--offering to see them in the a.m. when it is just raining....or rescheduling to another day. I opted for another day as I can't get my films tomorrow. My regular doctor's office will be closed.

Bus services aren't running in our county tomorrow at all.

If the winds are even in the 40s or so...I would not drive in it at all..especially if the route includes a bridge.

Right now it's not too bad here. Heavy overcast and the wind has gone from almost flat calm to very light. One neighbor behind us has put plywood over his front picture window. Everyone else that I can see from my house hasn't done anything like that. Along with many other counties, we are under a tornado watch.

The sky at 11:15 this morning.

I think the waiting is the worst part!

I'm also in Delray Beach. I am not panicing, I'm sure we will be fine. But I'm a little apprehensive, not sure if it will be a major impact for us or not. School is canceled for Monday and Tuesday. Last model I saw has the center passing very near us. I will check back in as soon as I can when it's gone!

Clermont checking in. It's starting to get breezy, overcast with an omnimous tinge a rain drop here and there. My neighbors just stopped over to make sure I'd be OK--they thought I'd be here alone, didn't know DS is here as well.

DS is still at work, he works for Publix and I wouldn't be surprised if they keep him late, which he's fine with, he gets paid extra for working Sunday to begin with.

The consenus around the neighborhood is no window coverings but bring in anything not nailed down, so as soon as DS gets home, we'll be bring the lanai furniture in.

And BTW--Kohls has some great sales going right now, I picked up a leather handbag, belt, and Christmas tree ornament for $40!
