Florida Senate Approves Bill for Year-Round Daylight Saving Time

This was pushed by the tourism lobby (among others) and IMO is a really bad idea. Living in Florida, we already get all too common reports of children being hit by cars in the early morning darkness when walking to/waiting at school bus stops (and in most cases it wasn't the children who were at fault). With this change, sunrise during the shortest days of the year will be at 8AM. On standard time, there's still light in the evening until around 6PM on those days where we live, and for me that's plenty compared to the situation in some northern states where it's getting dark at 4PM or earlier.

I don't normally care either way for the argument of having the time change or not but my FP day just happens to fall on this coming Sunday and I'm not a morning person to begin with. It's gonna be rough.

I hate this idea. In the colder months (as cold as it gets in Florida) we will be on Atlantic Time. So the evening news is now on at 8:00. And driving from Alabama to Florida on I-10, you get a two hour difference when you cross the state line. It would have been better to leave it at standard time all the time. Plus it will be dark when kids go to school.

AND, time is not supposed to be randomly voted on! It is absurd. Can you imagine the horrors for planes and trains? That's why it was all standardized. I am truly frightened by the number of people that think they get extra sunlight - as if changing a watch alters the path of the planet revolving around the sun. It hurts my head just thinking about it. DO they know they can simply alter their work schedules or the school schedules to get out earlier to get the magic 'extra sun'? Make them stop the madness.

Let me know if anyone has luck getting their employer change their business hours or school district to change their class schedules to give them an "extra hour." ;)

Where I work, most people have a choice - one can start between 7:30 - 9:30. Many people telecommute, have 2nd and 3rd shifts and this country's Baby Boomers are hitting retirement. Schools change their times frequently. In all cases, changing to a different 'false' time zone is still crazy. Do away with Daylight Saving Time but please allow different states and cities to choose what their time will be.

Maybe just split the difference and go ahead 1/2 hour and keep it year round. Or by zip code, if your's ends in an odd number you go forward 1 hour, even back and hour and if a prime number pick what ever pleases you.

There's still many, many more places of business that don't have that flexibility than places that do.

Yes, definitely a great idea for tourism.

So...I can book FP+ at 7 am, ADRs at 7 am, DVC at 8 am. Right now, it's the same time here as it is in FL, but tomorrow we'll be an hour later so I'll have to keep that in mind for bookings. But if I am booking a hotel room in the winter, it will be the same time here as in FL, but when it comes time to book my FP+, we may be an hour different again, so I'll have to remember that. I also have to remember that depending upon what time of year I go to WDW, I might have to adjust my watch when I arrive. I'll need to keep in mind the time change when booking flights, but only half of the year.

Ugh, my head hurts.

But how entitled is that - to ask congress to change the time to something not based on science so some people have more time off when it is not dark...and, worse, to have it not be consistent. We would be the laughing stock of the world.

I see it as the opposite, why should the world stick to archaic system as time change because the US wants it?

The archaic fake system is Daylight Saving Time - made up time - we should get rid of it. The rest is standardized throughout the world and based on the planet revolving around the sun - to the extent it made sense. It is the legal accepted time for the world. End the ridiculous Daylight Saving Time, please. It started this morning, so if we could please put the clocks back before tomorrow, let's do it!

Not at all.

I agree pick a time and everyone go by it. Changing twice a year is PIA!

I wish we would just go to permanent "normal time"...or permanent DST, or....the best of both worlds...split the difference and call it good...forever.

All the New Jersey folks coming in November for Jersey Week will go home a hour earlier. Coming from Georgia, you have a one hour difference in winter time. Florida will be on Atlantic Time (like Nova Scotia). Mid-Westerners would have a two hour difference.

Yeah, I was thinking about it the wrong way. Would be 4 hours difference from the west coast then during the winter. Ah well, don't know that 4 is all that worse than 3. I'm a bit doubtful this will end up happening though.

I imagine the folks on the west coast are having a bit of a snicker at all of the "it will be so confusing" comments from east-coasters.

I'll pass. We are on DST for 8 months of the year. Why would we get rid of it? Get rid of standard time. I don't need the sun directly overhead near Noon - I'd rather have it directly overhead at the midpoint of the time that I am awake. We don't need to use the sun to tell time; we have very sophisticated time pieces. On standard time the sun would rise each day in June at approx 4:15 AM (this is Chicago for reference) - what a waste.

This morning was the first Monday in DST in SW Florida. It was really dark at 7AM. If the Feds decide Florida can do this, it will be really dark at 8AM in December.
