Florida living overrated?

There is only 1 thing that would keep me from moving to Florida and the OP didn't mention it. It's the crocs. There is NO way I want one of critters in my back yard! :scared1:

Do you mean the gators :confused3 :rotfl: I think that crocs are in Australia :rotfl2: As far as I can tell, gators don't like the beach...I think you'd be safe in a good part of FL :teeth:

There is no link. Never made the news. Heard about it first hand.

What county/school district in northern Florida? An incident like this never made the news?

Yeah, THOSE too! I don't get the difference between the two, but I like neither of them.

Edit: I guess this is where I should say I don't like sharks either? :confused3 :teeth:

I've lived in Florida over a year and I've only seen one alligator. It was crawling out of a ditch filled with water along a highway right after one of the hurricanes. I walk around my neighborhood a lot. We have a lake a few blocks away. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

In my review of the DIS Boards I notice that there is a number of postings about moving to Florida. Many posters describe the goal of moving to Florida, or an actual move. They describe live in Florida as being heaven on earth and that anyone who lives somewhere else is just crazy.

As a frequent winter visitor to many parts of Florida, I wonder what all the hype is all about. Sure Florida is nice as a winter vacation. But for 8 months of the year Florida is:

Hot
Flat
Economically challenged
Full of low paying service jobs
Overpopulated (ever drive from Tampa to Naples?)
Full of crackers and rednecks
Has lots of crime
Generally Poor schools
Unresponsive government
Tons of traffic
Poor mass transit
Hurricanes
Forest Fires

I could go on and on!

What is the appeal of Florida, other than mild winter weather and the beach?

What a minute, you sure you aren't describing Louisiana?

Hey, at least we don't have powere outages from ice storms. And no one ever dies of over exertion from shoveling snow.

No earthquakes or landslides that I can remember.

I think the above also might apply to Florida as well.

Every place has its ups and downs. Everyone had different priorities.

We just went on the Behind the Seeds tour at Epcot Thursday. The guide told us the difference. Alligators have snouts more pointed than crocs. Also, when the croc's mouth is closed, the teeth are on the outside (is this called overbite?)

I think we need to start a DIS Gator Club thread for all of us Gators. I wonder if the Alumni Association would recognize us? :p

Do you think you've got your "answer" yet??

I live in North Florida, in a county that has about 100,000 residents. I know that we do NOT have the KKK here. My DH is from a small, country town where there is no diversity and my parents live about 1 hour from there in a similar small town. I have worked in the community school for 8 years where my DH is from and now work at the high school for our entire beach, which has 3 elementary schools and 1 middle school as feeders. I know our community well. I really wish that people would not put this kind of story out without proof to back it up. I am not saying it didn't happen, just that it is very unlikely. All teachers, even 1st year, are represented by a union. A teacher can be terminated from a school if they aren't under contract, but they can go to the union if they feel unjustly terminated, as well as their local school board. I can't imagine going to school to get a degree and then just giving up without a fight if something like this happened to me. I would think for the sake of the community and the students, I would fight to get this situation taken care of. Very few people would want the KKK involved in their community and just think of the poor children who are having to live in such homes. I would be getting the word out, people do not tolerate discrimination the way they did up through the 60's. If this just happened last year, she needs to take a stand.

Would move there in a second if I thought I could make a living. There aren't many openings for bureaucrats in Florida.

I am in DC. We laugh in the face of traffic anywhere else but maybe Los Angeles.

As for gators vs. crocs, had a Jungle Cruise skipper once who instructed riders on how to tell the difference between the two...the alligators are plastic and the crocodiles are fiberglass.
