Florida Gator football lovers: A perspective on your program

You deserve it, I have been greeted with nothing but hostility from SEC fans. I am opened minded and just enjoy great football, but mention that a team is better than an SEC team, and it's like World War 3 just started.

When I watch football at the only sports bar on island, drunk tourists that are LSU/Florida/Alabama fans always come in and get wasted acting like idiots. They do nothing but yell and curse at us. I have had 2 punches thrown at me and 4 beers poured on me THIS YEAR! It's different fans every week but the result is usually the same.

I deserve what to be called crazy? I think that is a bit of a personal attack.

sure there are teams better than SEC teams, I don't think anyone is disputing that. are those people locals or vacationers who are getting drunk and crazy? not an excuse but most people tend to cut loose on vacation.

ETA - your attitude on many posts on the DIS would have me not surprised at how they act towards you, I am sure you are just sitting there minding your own business and not saying a word or egging anyone on or anything.

Excuse me??? Bradford is a team quitter????? Not a Christian??? I'll give that my own "whatever" (Using both hands!) I understand you must hate OU, but that was a very judgemental statement to make. Percy Harvin left Florida early for the NFL; do you consider him a "team quitter"?

Sam was a possible number one draft pick last year, which would have meant an insane amount of money in the NFL. Did he choose that path? No! He decided to return to school, and continue to live his dream of playing for the University of Oklahoma. Now, after injuring his shoulder twice and having season ending surgery, his NFL future is in jeopardy, and he has chosen to focus on that future rather than risk further injury by returning for his senior season. Everyone in the program, from Stoops, to Castiglione, to his teammates unanimously agreed that that would be the best decision he could make and support him fully. It was NOT an easy decision for him to make, and I do not understand how being concerned for his health and future makes him less of a Christian???

I don't like Florida, and I really don't like Texas, but I think Tebow and McCoy are upstanding young men, and would never judge them harshly if they were in the same position as Sam. Actually, anyone who knows football knows that it was the smart decision to make, considering the injury, and fans should be thankful it was not their QB's being forced to make that decision so early in the season.

I love college football as much as anyone, and get very emotionally involved. But in the end, it is a game, played by young men who, for the most part, are good people. Mistakes are made, especially in the heat of the moment, such as in the Spikes case. But, just because a player plays for a rival team, that doesn't automatically make them a bad person, and they don't deserve to have their decisions or their Christianity questioned so harshly. That's taking it too far, IMO.
As a Florida fan (and one who has definitely defended Tebow and Meyer in the past....probably a little too tenaciously), I disagree with the slur of Bradford as well. I also disagree with this "punishment" of Spikes. I don't care what Georgia was doing (and I did see some dirty plays on their part)....it doesn't excuse trying to eye gouge. I don't condone dirty play (or bad actions off the field, for that matter) whether they're done by my favorite team or another team.

:lmao:
The away games are just Gator Walk- (Which is soooooo much fun)-- with a few thousand opposing teams fans thrown in, all jockeying for position to see Tebow.:sad2:

We always wonder if the other fans actually ever go to see their team, they are so interested in ours.:confused3

State weekend, we stayed at the hotel the State players stayed at. There was hardly anyone around, a few kids asking for autographs of their players.

We went to UF's hotel---- :scared1: security was so tight- the officers saying "no pictures" to the fans.... roped off areas--- no one was allowed near them the day of the game.
There were lots of State fans there as well, all clamoring for Tebow.

My DD- age 14 ---was actually more impressed when she came face to face with Hernandez, and then when she saw R.Cooper--- it was all over then.:rotfl:

For true Gator fans... it's more than just the Timmy show. That's the difference.
Even at my age (32), it would be all over if I saw Riley Cooper in person.....he's absolutely gorgeous even if I never have seen the appeal of being a cougar.

You and I haven't gotten along on any football issue that we've talked about but I will agree with you that that's ridiculous behavior. I'm glad none of the Florida fans I know are like that (just like none of the Raiders fans you know are like the idea I've always had of them.)

I can't think of any school that I wouldn't send my kid to because of the football team's fans (although it would kil me if my son picked FSU, and I doubt we'd be able to afford UM.)

Football dynasties come and go. No team is up forever. This is the Gator's time now.
AGREED. Geez.. I didn't know the team was such a deciding factor in a child's education.. :confused3 To each his own, I guess..

And the last statement is so true. Everyone needs to chill.
Pretty much am uncomfortable in Florida and I was born and raised here. I am 46 years old, and as long as I have known about the different colleges I have hated Florida, Sorry, it may be irrational but I can't stand the attitudes of most of the people that go there, sure there are some exceptions, but very few, and I don't want my kids to be one of them.
Hmm.. That seems a bit over the top. I could start talking a lot of crap about other Florida schools.. (FSU- highest STD rate of all FL Universities, UM- The REAL Thug U..) but the point is the education..and UF will give your child the best education in the state.
Hickvill+Football+Football player arrest = Charges dropped

These are just when players have been caught. I know a couple current players on the team and lets say they are less than good citizens.
Excuse me? Hickville? Wow. That's nice. And where are you from? I've lived in the North Florida my entire life and I can say that I know very few "hicks".

As far as the eye gouging goes: read this article. It's about how Ealey doesn't think Spikes should be suspended... HMMM. If the football player who's eyes were gouged doesn't think he should be suspended, why do you?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/11/03/ealey-spikes.ap/index.html

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey
Ealey said Tuesday he doesn't believe Spikes should have been suspended.
In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday's game drew so much attention.
Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey's eyes.
Ealey says he doesn't agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.
"That really didn't matter to me," Ealey said of the suspension. "That's their decision. He shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football."
Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn't hurt.
"He really didn't gouge my eyes," Ealey said. "He really didn't get a chance to get close to my eyes."
The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

"I'm pretty sure it goes on back and forth," he said. "We probably do it and other teams do too. It's all football. We're just out there trying to have fun."
Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. The Bulldogs play Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
On Monday, Spikes issued an apology.
"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions," Spikes said. "I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."
The Southeastern Conference issued a statement on Monday saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.
Meyer said he believed Spikes retaliated after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game.
Georgia coach Mark Richt said Spikes' "helmet went flying off ... and there was one time he got hit with his helmet off."
"It was totally unintentional," Richt said. They were totally just playing ball. That might have got him bent out of shape. I don't know about all of that."
Ealey carried 17 times for 70 yards against the Gators.
"It was just a lot of emotion in the game," he said. "We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. ... We were just out there playing football and having fun."
Notes: Richt said Caleb King will start over Ealey at tailback in Saturday's game against Tennessee Tech. Richt said King has the edge in pass-blocking but said Ealey "will continue to play." Ealey has started the last two games. ... Richt said he hopes top receiver A.J. Green, who will miss this week's game with a pulmonary contusion, can return to play against Auburn on Nov. 14.

on their current schedule two are ranked though....right?

as I said in this and two other threads, I would love a weekly side by side analysis of ranking that week of each of the top 25 teams...it just isn't out there that I have found.

ETA: oops...three but this doesn't show Wis as ranked..they must have squeezed in this week

Thanks, lilygator....I've seen better pictures during the game (when his hair is messed up) but he's still a cutie even in this pic.

I think that was his baseball pic anyway, he is very cute in person...they all look so great dressed up on the Gator walk...I'll try and get some better pictures Saturday....I am usually holding one of the girls up so they can see....

you know, re the drunken fans that uua talks about, come on....that is ANY team, I mean there are idiot fans in any and every sport it seems, I've seen some parents at gymnastics a bit over the top....I think people who love certain teams get very passionate about them, do I love the Gators? You bet, enough to purchase season tickets, give a ridiculous donation every year......are they doing well right now? yes, could they lose tomorrow? sure, is the world going to stop? no....I was fan back in the day when we had no wins, when I went to UF it was the Spurrier era....FSU was also a huge winner during that time....we'll go through the cycles over the years I am sure, but I truly don't think it's a fair assessment to say fl, lsu and bama fans are the only drunk ones and to hate Tebow just because he gets so much coverage....that kid is so humble - he is not going out looking for the media to hound him and put him out there....it makes you sound so bitter to simply hate someone for a reason such as that. And I stand by my previous stmt re those fans and you. I mean why would they say anything at all to you? You wearing an opposing teams shirt? Or you yelling how you hate Tebow to the screen?

Iowa 9 - 0

Florida 8 - 0

omg! this is toooooo funny, both teams will have played 12 games regular season at Iowa 11/21 Fl 11/28..you know what a bye week is right? well FL has had one. so we can only be 8-0 right now.....but we'll also have a 13th game, the sec championship game.

Obviously you are a fan of Thug U and nothing could change that. No matter how many of the schools football players get arrested you will still have love for Thug U. UF=Thug U. UCF is going to pass up Thug U very soon with the way Thug U is treating students. Thug U is all reputation but no substance. UCF is ranked in the top 10 in research and the 2nd best in application. UCFs MBA is in the top 10 in being administered.

Gainsville is hickville, redneck town, hillbilly heaven, Whatever you want to call it, it still remains the same.
