FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Not a hunter myself, but I have talked to hunters who used handguns. Some carry a powerful handgun as a backup. Others do varmint (squirrels mostly) hunting using 22s. The guy I talked to said that game hit with an unjacketed lead bullet could be eaten if the entire wound was cut out. That was years ago though. I think a lot of places now require non-lead bullets for hunting.

There are powerful handguns that can be used as the primary hunting weapon as well. Generally, they are either revolvers or single shot. There are also a handful of high powered semi-autos designed for hunting, but they are VERY expensive & still not as powerful as the best revolvers & single shots. So, they're not very popular.

9mm (which was reportedly used in this shooting) is not used for hunting.

If flying US-Canada-US (which this man would have been doing had he connected in Canada) you have to collect your luggage at the connecting airport (for most airports - some, I think, just make you id a picture of it now). Which would mean that you posses it at that point. And you go through Canadian customs - which would/should stop a banned firearm.

Wasn't aware of that - there may be some provision in place within the airport. It's hard to imagine this American being licensed to possess a handgun in Canada.

In this case, it turns out that he didn't transit through Canada, so his lack of a Canadian license is a moot point. Still curious in general though - I assume that Canadian gun laws have to be followed, but I really don't know.

It's ok, we've got broad shoulders ..sigh

I have delicate petite shoulders, thank you very much :)

The only thing that I can think is that only two airlines use terminal 2 - Delta and Air Canada. Perhaps the shooting was near an AC baggage carousel?

Has there been any update on the injured and conditions of those hospitalized? 5 fatalities still confirmed?
I just read there were still people on planes as of 8 pm...since 1 pm??
So many people affected by this awful tragedy... which appears to involve mental Illness which is So sad.... the stigma has got to be removed so people/families can get the help they need!
Such a tragedy on many levels.

Our local CBS affiliate (WBZ) just said on our news

- that the shooter was in the National Guard

- that his brother said that in 2016, he told people he was being "forced to fight for ISIS"

- that he had child porn charges against him a few years back*

- and that the guns and ammo he used were transported on the airline legally

* ETA there may be some confusion about the porn charges as that could be another person of the same name

You can not legally transport ammo on a flight. You can transport a gun in a legal way, but not ammo. This is coming from a friend that works in the airlines and another friend that takes his gun with him when flying.

Not true. The ammo just has to be in its original container and be SEPARATE from the firearm itself. DH has had to travel with guns and ammo many, many times.

I was just reporting what was being said on the news.

Watching more tonight, there seem to be lots of questions about this man, and about the situation.

I suppose we'll get it all sorted out at some point.

I agree with what mnrose said earlier. Everyone, watch yourselves when you're in a crowded place. (Sorry if that comes off as a PSA!) Always try to be aware of your surroundings. This seems to be the world we live in now. :(

Very sad. Airports are perfect soft targets for idiots with guns who want to do harm. And, there is frankly no way to stop this. If you move to "screening" outside the airport somewhere, all you've done is moved the target. Anytime you have large groups of people gathering, you've created targets for mad men (and women, I guess, although this one is, like the vast majority of others, male)

Last I heard on the local news, the hospital where the injured were taken to (I think it's Broward Health Medical Center) said that they are expected to survive.

Seems like a bunch of misinformation floating around on this thread today. Probably a result of crappy reporting on legitimate news sites. Seems like lately they aren't much more accurate than the fake news sites.

One time I was checking in at American at PIT and a petite young woman was a couple people ahead of me. She had a large case, I was thinking musical instrument. Much to my shock, she was asked to open it and it was a semi automatic rifle! The agent at the counter tagged it and she then had to take it to a special desk to finish the check-in. That popped in my head today, she could have opened that case and started firing.

The bottom line is that essentially ANYONE can do essentially ANYTHING if they truly desire. To what end will certainly vary, and it will most likely be the last act of that person in many cases, but we're silly to think that a protocol here or a policy there is going to do the trick.
